Rockstargate Helped More Than it Hurt

whatlink.gif

In many ways, Rockstargate helped the industry as much as it has hurt it. Sure, video games may see a congressional hearing in the coming months, sure modders are under more scrutiny as are the Easter Eggs that get slipped into games, but look what we've gotten in return.

For every story about the hidden sex in Grand Theft Auto there was typically a mention of the average age of gamers (29). For every sensational television segment on the dangers of gaming to the youth of today, there was a chance to get our point across. In the past month, just about every major newspaper has written a story about video games. The New York Times had a front page story on gaming. The Economist has an in-depth piece on gaming's changing face. For the first time in the history of gaming, non-gamers are debating the value, importance and impact of gaming to an audience that has never played a game.

Let's face it, Hot Coffee may have given the industry a temporary black eye, but at least people have finally woken up to the idea that gaming isn't just for kids anymore.
