Shigeru Miyamoto was all over E3 this year. As I mentioned in a post last week, one of the major benefits of this year's show was that developers seemed to have a bit more time to get chatty with the competition, seeing each other's stuff, even playing each other's stuff. It was certainly a kinder, gentler E3.
This tiny gallery shows Miyamoto's visit to the Ubisoft suite where he checked out Haze, Assassin's Creed (Yes, that's Jade there doing the demo. I bet she remembered his name) and other games. Oh, and that's him shaking hands with Ubi pres Yves Guillemot. Hit the jump for Epileptic Game's fantastic vid of "The Shiggy", Miyamoto's gamer's face while watching Haze... I think the game might have freaked him out a bit.

FPS scare miyamoto
I bet she remembered his name
Aww, poor you! At least you're not the one being virtually stalked by the <18 gamers.
good graphics scare him too
This is a very different picture of Nintendo then we are use to. In the past, Miyamoto would have stayed away from doing things like this, especially in the public eye.
Has Reggie convinced Miyamoto and Iwata that to increase American and European sales, they need to embrace the western trends? I'm really surprised to see these kinds of pictures. Did you expect to see this stuff Brian?
nectar instead of mushroom scares Miyamoto
He was just there so he could meet Jade.
Wow, even more Kotaku Miyamoto E3 footage. Admit it, you were stalking him for three days. ;-)
@Fluffy22:
What doesn't scare him, is working on a system that isn't bombing horribly at the moment and will actually make a profit this generation.
Shigeru's not freaked out - he's trying not to look like he's lusting for "that hot chick from Ubisoft".
Shiggy-san is my new favorite person. lol
I don't think Haze freaked him out as much as the five billion ideas for games popping into his wild brain at one time.
All those pics, and Jade is in just ONE of them. And we can hardly see her.
Less Shiggy; more Jade.
Hope they get this game bug free before release. Can't wait to check it out
Man, I bet Miyamoto and his translator buddy are like, best friends.
So jealous.
@Kyle81: It sure seems like he's not pleased by Haze at the very least, or he's just so intrigued by the concept of a game not designed to draw in old people and other non-gamers that he doesn't know what to think.
In all seriousness, though, maybe he was trying to think of ideas for the FPS he's been saying he could make. What better way to learn about a genre than by examining the competition?
Jade i love you give me a holla gurl
hes thinking, man maybe we should have used more than duct tape and recycled gamecubes
oh epgaming = awesomeness, especially when robert summa is hosting.
I do like this aspect of E3 as well. The ability to check out the competition, chat with them, pick their brains, and in a casual manner; this is something I really wish we had in my industry. It makes for better games, more competition, and perhaps some friendly rivalries. Developers can go check out another studio's game, be unimpressed or disappointed, and talk to the developer to discuss their angle on the game for more understanding. Miyamoto checking out Haze looks funny, but I hope a lot of developers went over to his booth to discuss his games as well. I'm not diggin' the hair, but I'm sure there's a lot of insight to gain from talking to the guy.
Oh man, Jade Raymond. She's amazing o.o
@Kyle81:
Unoriginal games scare Miyamoto.
@Archaotic:
Could and would are two different things.
Was that Reggie sitting behind him?
Less Shigeru, more Jade please.
Haze is obviously at the opposite of what he believes. I think he's disappointed.
Lol, he didn't exactly look excited for Haze. I bet he's asking himself why Metroid Prime 3 isn't that good.
I bet Miyamoto was thinking on how to make mini-games out of Jade's game. Perfect for Wii "gamers".
Miyamoto goes to the other competitors' booths and conferences every year, I don't see why there is surprise.
i find that behind shot of miyamoto and crew staring at haze hilarious!
Curiosity: who's the guy hiding his face with the notebook? White shirt, silver watch over SM's left shoulder in the main picture. He doesn't appear in any of the other pictures, either...or was it just a complete coincidence.
The press should have some more face-time with that bearded dude on the left there, Patrice Desilets. He's the lead designer for AC, and has a lot of interesting things to say. I especially like how his "gaming fantasy" is to make a game which takes place during Jesus Christ's life, and actually make him part of the experience.
I for one am happy to see Shigeru out and about.
I don't think he looks displeased. It seems to me his wheels are spinning and he's thinking about how he'd either change the game to suit his design style or how he'd create his own FPS. As an aside, how off-the-wall crazy/fun would a Shiggy FPS be?
I don't think he would have that level of attentiveness if he was annoyed/angry/displeased at Haze.
Miyamoto playing xbox. That is awesome.
Hehe, Super Mario FPS.
@Altima NEO:
you mean ps3
How crazy would a Miyamoto FPS be? Its got to have mushrooms etc!
@Lapcoil:
The Gamecube was profitable.
What's Miyamoto doing with his chin in the video? It seems pretty weird.
I bet some people there felt like they were in a Mass with the presence of Jesus!
@code.monkey: I agree, he didn't look displeased to me at all.
more Jade, less Shiggy. HES OVERATED ANYWAY!!1
@balliinn: Miyamoto overrated? dude ask Bill Gates or Kaz Harai who they would wish to have in their companies, and I bet $5000 they say his name... gaming after Atari is in a big part thanks to him... you probably should think about how overrated he is when reporters are following him around an event just to see what he is doing.
@ BALLIINN "HE'S OVERATED ANYWAY!!1"
Who else do you know that can wake up in the morning and invent million dollar game franchises as if they're nothing. The man was sitting in his garden one day and was like "oh sh**! I think I'll make Pikmin." Who does that? Dude's a genius.
But Jade Raymond is damn fine tho. So, yes, more Jade please. It was getting kinda sad that gamers only had Morgan Webb (and her gianormous jaw) to look at.
*books brian a ticket on waaahmtrak*
It's good to see the man let out of his 1-man think tank for a few days of soaking up the Western garbage. Reggie looks out of place, however, with his undertaker look. That man should not wear black, for fear children won't see him coming and get crushed like goombas.
Ah, Jade, what can I say that has not already been regurgitated by thousands of sexually frustrated game geeks already? Huzzah, shone Frau!
@jakster4u:
Actually he's probably happy that Metroid isn't as full of fail as Haze
I bet she remembered his name
Aww... does it matter that much? You are just journalists at best. Journalists come and go.
@Archaotic:
I can see it now, a FPS involving Mario where you fling fireballs instead of bullets
I wouldn't say atall that Shige-kun looks scared... he's just pondering something while massaging his chin.
I don't see how someone can go and construct this as "looking scared", that's ludicrously far-fetched.
@el_gordo:
Yeah. One question: was the translator there translating the moans and random phrases when Shiggy was getting laid with Jade?
@jakster4u:
Since you've apparently played both Haze and Metroid Prime 3 I'm quite interested to hear your views and comparisons of the two shooters. That is, unless you were just trolling. :)
Miyamoto's FPS?
Don't forget that Miyamoto (and a crack team) had a big role in turning Metroid Prime from disaster development into the classic that it is.
Also I wonder what his relationship with Doak is like, seeing as Rare and Nintendo were pretty tight back in the day...
I would love to see a pared down version of Assassin Creed come to the Wii, although it will never happen.
ShiggyMoto seemed to like Rayman Raving Rabbids 2.
Did anyone else feel just a little bit creepy staring intently at Miyamoto's face for 48 straight seconds? I'd sure be creeped out if someone was doing that to me...
@Lapcoil: Are you implying that the Cube didn't make a profit? It made a larger profit than the PS2 and the Xbox(obviously), because Nintendo uses cheap parts D:
It appears like Jade is looking at Miyamoto-San for approval. She looks nervous; he probably disapproves. Where's the waggle? Where's the...mushroom/plant/elfish people?
I think he looks sick in that main picture.
But all in all, the real reason he's there is to get a taste at what he can never develope =(
I like how you can see Reggie in the background of the video. Miyamoto's bodyguard, hmm?
