Making a non-appearance at E3, but showing up in the recently released list of upcoming Nintendo DS software was Professor Layton and the Curious Village, a localization of the already released in Japan, already sold a fuckton of copies Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village. The puzzle-solving adventure game was developed by Level 5 whose previous work includes Dragon Quest VIII, Rogue Galaxy and the Dark Cloud series.
The game has been a certified hit overseas, regularly appearing in the top 30 Media Create software sales charts. Similar to other stealth Nintendo DS release, Nintendo Magic, the game is due to ship before the end of the year on December 3rd the same day as Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii.

I saw this a while back when the press release came out. There's some other notable games as well, like dates for Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, and Front Mission for DS is officially coming here as well.
Sooooooooooo excited for this clever and beautiful game.
I have been super excited for Professor Layton since I saw the previews last year, and now that it's being localized, I can't wait to play this seemingly-awesome game. :) Can't wait. December will be nuts.
Not really much of an announcement then, is it? More like mumbled for domestic release.
i played the japanese version, helped by my japanese knowledge and some gamefaqs guide for some puzzle trough the game, and i really had a good time...i'm happy to see it'll be released in the us and i hope also in eu...
i highly reccomend you to buy it.
I will probably have to get this game, as my last name is Layton.
Its a great game, excellent voice acting, and fun puzzles.
Plus the artwork and music was just as expected from another quality Level5 game. :)
Those who have not played the J version be sure to pick up the US one when it comes out. Its a nice little distraction from the normal game genre.
I'm so happy Nintendo decided to release this, I've been intrigued ever since I first saw it. I just hope it sells quite well (if it's good), because I'd like to see more offbeat games being given a chance. If it flops the chances of some of the other unreleased games making it over here falls.
Wow, all of these comments and not a one is bagging on it. I guess I'll have to check this out!
MUST GET

...sold a fuckton of copies...

is that the best descriptor you could think of? "a lot" would have been enough.
Wow, I actually doubted that this would make it over here.
Who's the publisher? Why do Kotaku writers never include both the publisher and the developer? And why oh why are minigames so prevalent on Nintendo systems?
@glaeven: I think he used fuckton because it was sort of unexpected, mainly because it was an original IP.
My previous comment aside, I AM looking forward to this.
So, who's publishing this? Is it Nintendo?
Yes, Nintendo is publishing it.
I really enjoyed Hotel Dusk and the game looks just as unique. I think I'll be buying it.
This looks really good. Glad we're getting it this year.
Is this adventure game as in AceAttorney, or adventure game as in LucasArts, or something completely different?
Just from the above comments and the few pictures and videos of the Japanese version I've seen I'm looking forward to trying this game for sure. Being developed by the awesome Level-5 folks doesn't hurt either.
Hahaha... "fuckton". I love that word.
:)
You can write "fuckton"? I hope the FCC censorship Nazis don't get you.
Adventure Games to Buy This Year:
- September -
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations
- October -
Touch Detective 2 1/2
Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaro's Treasure
- December -
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
PS: Anybody else notice that the game got downgraded for the US? In Japan, the Village was Mysterious, now it's just "Curious".
Cool, I had missed hearing about this game but now I'm interested.
I really wish you guys would have external links to stuff you talk about. I hate having to read something then have to google the official site or a screenshot so I have some kind of knowledge about the game.
@dcartist:
Dude, they can swear like sailors here.
@C-Stick:
Nintendo will be the American publisher. Level 5 published it in Japan.
@yanya: The title thing is called bad localization.
Which usually happens when idiots in localization teams name games for the US.
Been looking forward to this title for a long time. The art style seems inspired by Hergé's Tintin which gives it that unique European flavor. It would be nice to keep the japanese voice acting intact, but with Nintendo publishing it's highly unlikely.
I hope the first game does well so the (planned) trilogy will make its way overseas.
Fun Fact: Layton's sidekick Luke is voiced by the lovely actress/idol Maki Horikita, who played Aoi Yamada in Densha Otoko.
Love the character designs and artwork. I was tempted to import it, but glad that I waited since I'll actually be able to understand the dialogue.
