I want to read a hands on impression, but these screens/trailer are looking incredible.
if it werent for the ps3s controller being the worst for fps then i might be more excited
and the fact that the first killzone was nothing but a handy coaster
I still can't believe they pulled it off (graphics wise)...
I'll save real judgment til the PSN demo comes out. Hopefully it'll play as good as it looks!
I hope the gameplay is as good as these screens
Wow, those screens look nice!
If each level is 2gb alone, then if there's a demo it's gonna be one big download.
@Genfuyung: Just buy the splitfish control, then FPS games are the best they can be on a console
Does anyone one else think that the PS3 just... came out too soon? If they knew games like this were in Dev, along with MGS4 and Home, they could have left Microsoft in limbo, like the dreamcast. The PS2 still had legs, still had games that could impress, and in that time the Bluray costs could have come down, the entire setup could have been finished and the market would have been heavily anticipating their new console. I'm sure Sony were concerned about Microsoft getting to much of a lead over them, and didn't have everything in place when they released their behemoth.
I think 'wait Killzone.. is good?!' Sums up the suprise that most people feel when they see that the PS3 is starting to get its act together, I don't think that Sony have done enough yet, but look at all their consoles, it takes time to get the best out of them.
I find it amusing that on the gun the sight its using is very similar to the EO-Holotech sight. Shit even the buttons are very, very close to the real thing too.
Nice touch with that, I like it.
emotions are running SO high right now .. i think people expected this to totally flop thats why there is still so much animosity about this game .. personally i think its the best looking game ive seen in a long time and i cant wait for it so im going to try and work for sony.
@Genfuyung: What are you talking about? The PS controller and 360 controller are identical in every respect except the right stick is higher on 360. All the other buttons are in exactly the same place. I just put them side by side and the only difference is your trigger finger is higher up on the PS one.
Looks good, but not $500+$60+tax good.
When is this coming out? It'd be nice if there was a price drop again before it released.
@Huckleberry:
Yes, because this is the only game people will buy for the PS3.
Enough with the $500+$60 comments already!
I must be the only person on this planet who thinks this game looks typical of the other U3E games out there.
Personally, I thought COD4 demo graphically smoked this game.
I must say, fucking impressive.
@SORENKIER I agree, the PS3 was forced to come out too early, this holiday season could mark a relaunch of sorts and I can actually see the PS3 hate of the gamesites subside with each passing day. Of course the haters will come out in droves but it's only natural, they don't want their system to go the way of the Dreamcast and MS doesn't have a good track record of staying with their consoles for too long.
The moment anyone makes a game that ups the ante enough MS will probably scrap their system like they did for the original Xbox to release the XBOX 720.
I hope not though, I am slowly earning trust towards MS after what they did to me with their original console and I am actually enjoying a couple of games for it.
I still don't think It looks anything like the previous E3 trailer. I'm a bit disappointed, but let's hope they fixed everything I hated about the original. Then maybe it will turn out to be a good game.
@ARboom: Just ignore him, he's been a bit of a troll all day.
On topic, this does look amazing. I think it's pushed me off the fence into the PS3 yard.
The press confernece had a bit more footage to it. I can't wait for that to come out in HD.
I can't help but feel that some people are a little too desperate to have a "Halo" on the PS3. Yes, the game looks pretty fancy, but that's about it. Nothing else about it particulary stands out, and since the first game wasn't any good, I really can't understand the fuss that's being kicked up over this one. The fact they seem to be focusing on the graphics more than anything else, doesn't help matters.
Why do so many people diss the PS controller for first person shooters? Are you guys on crack. Its the exact same as the Xbox. Timesplitters pioneered the dual sticks back at the PS2 launch, and has since been used everywhere.
If one level is 2GB, and it took someone 15 minutes to get through one level, and Blu-ray holds 25GB...
Then is this game going to have just over 3 hours gameplay!?
Can't wait for this or at least the demo
@Keldan: How is he being a troll, his comment wasn't inflammatory at all, Negative opinion =/= troll
Back on topic, I'm impressed they pulled it off graphically, but the trailer still made the game look too bland. I don't know if it's the art or the setting, I just can't see myself becoming immersed in this game. The first Killzone felt horrible to control, I hope that they streamlined the controls a bit, they always felt a little floaty.
@Cartman86: The analogue sticks are on the bottom of the PS controller, the D-pad is still being used as the primary method of movement, which is a little bizarre. Having both analogue sticks at the bottom, means your thumbs are sitting at an awkward angle. It isn't very nice after a period of time. The Playstations analogue sticks are also made out of a strange rubbery material, and are more difficult to grip, you constantly find yourself having to readjust your thumb posistion.
And don't even get me started on the triggers. :)
I hope they preserve the lack of a HUD. That could end up being really cool.
Visuals were great, if not REALLY dark. Hopefully the whole game lightens up some.
However, the gameplay from the trailer at the conference seemed, well poor at worst, average at best. Here's hoping to see that was not indictive of the entire game.
The fuss comes from the e3 2005 trailer, and the media jumping down Sony's throat for putting out a CG trailer that was obviously and completely impossible on the ps3, basically accusing Sony of lying in a huge way. So there's been a lot riding on Killzone 2 simply because of that, and I promise that's why Sony's sunk so much money into Killzone 2.
Nintendo and 360 fans have been using that trailer as an insult for over two years. Now that Sony has come so close to the trailer, Sony fans and ps3 owners feel a lot of validation in our (rather expensive) purchase.
In the grand scheme of things, most playstation fans probably aren't all that interested in Killzone 2 beyond the ps3 vindication aspect. We want our Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Rachet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet, and whatever Team Ico comes up with. But for those who want a good fps too, it's nice to know the ps3 can do those also.
Sweet looking game.
But it's an FPS so meh. What a waste of talent. Could use those budget and development effort to a more innovative game.
The problem with the dualshock/ps3 controllers is that the thumb sticks are far too close together for comfortable use by anyone with adult male size hands.
I know that playing R:FoM caused my hands to cramp up like mad while jamming through Gears of War on the 360 was so very comfortable. It's all in the size of the controller and ergonomic positioning of the sticks.
Sorry, after how Killzone (1) turned out, I'm not believing a goddamned thing I see till the actual game comes out.
simply amazing... nothing more needs to be said.
Compared to the E3 concept video... I'd say it looks startlingly close. I'm no graphic nut, as I find gameplay to be a much more important qualifier, but this game looks really impressive. The explosions/fire could still use a little work, but shit, look at Motorstorm concept vs. actual gameplay. No one ever actually reaches the goal set by their concept vid... well, not yet. This game could break that trend.
As for gameplay... Killzone 1 was as rushed as games get. Also, it was Guerilla's first game, and they made some amateur mistakes. Now that they've got time, funding, and a bit of experience under their belts... small wonder it looks so damn good. I doubt it will redefine shooters, but if they can loosen up the stiff feel of the first, and get rid of the glitches and annoying characters, they're golden. Let us hope, though, that they don't try to be clever with story again... their first attempt at plot was atrocious enough that I couldn't bring myself to finish the game. Bad plot is acceptable, but bad plot that thinks it's good plot makes me cry.
Here is a comparison of one of these Killzone 2 screens with Gears of War
What do you think?
@GHz: Dual Layer Blu-Ray Discs hold 50GB :D
@Polyh3dron:
So that would still be just over 6 hours then?
Unless they make you stay in the same building/ location for a good 2/3 hours, which would dwarf the 15 minutes that it took the guy to get through level 3.
Am I missing something here? It just seems a little strange that 15 minutes gameplay takes a whole 2GB.
@genfuyung
"if it werent for the ps3s controller being the worst for fps then i might be more excited"
The 360 controller has no inherent advantages over the PS3 one for FPS games. In my opinionall console controllers suck for fps. If you want the ultimate experience then use a mouse and keyboard. Here's to hoping they include mouse and keyboard support for this game like they are for the PS3 version of Unreal 3.
The graphics of Killzone 2 were amazing, but what else did it have? The character models and environments are somewhat bland from an artistic standpoint, much like in the first. The gameplay didn't look groundbreaking or terrifically fun, much like in the first. Compared the amazing gameplay videos we've seen out of Call of Duty: 4 and Bioshock I truly can't understand what all the buzz is about.
@GHz:
Gears looks sharper and shinier, but on the other hand Gears is already finished KZ2 not.
@MrSatan:
The FPS model works better on the 360 controller for two reasons - your thumb placement is in a more natural position. It's less inward, and more natural to holding a grip on a controller. Also, it has an actual trigger your finger clutches, and opposed to a button on TOP (instead of in back) that has less of a "feel" than the trigger. At least that's why I prefer a 360 controller and have never met a single person who prefers a PS controller over a 360 for FPS's.
for alpha it looks better then all 360 FPS games together...
@ GHZ
Well, keep in mind, game assets get re-used and it was a developer playing this game. I'd reckon the game wil last around 9-10 hours for someone that jumps in the first time. Especially since later levels get harder to beat.
Killzone's (PS2) intro level was quite short too but later levels quite longer.
@ARboom: The thumbs are placed differently, which makes it more important. The placement of the left thumb makes or breaks a controller, to be honest. And the fact that both sticks on the PS3 controller are right next to each other, and at a lower position, makes it extremely uncomfortable after long sessions. The 360 controller makes it seem a lot more natural, and especially since the left analog stick is positioned in the primary area, compared to the D-Pad of the SIXAXIS.
@IMSKACORE
From an artistic point of view, this is one of the best things out there. Killzone triggered a small trend at the time of enemies having glowing eyes, or at least popularized it. The art-direction itself is stunning, from the design of every character and environment to whole design document of the world, story and atmosphere. It has links to WWII in tone and gameplay (future combat will never be that hectic, I'm sure of it).
Of course, it's all opinion and taste. But I really love what Guerrilla has accomplished so far.
ugh. It isn't just about the graphics being better than any other game. It's the whole package. The chaos, the amount of on-screen action, the animation, the lighting, the blood, the way the soldiers react to being shot. It's everything combined that makes it what it is. . .
Not to mention it has 7 or more months left and we all know that graphic polish is one of the last things that happens.
Looks nice, but you can polish a turd all you want; it's still a turd. The first Killzone was craptastic and new hardware isn't going to turn Guerilla Games into a AAA dev studio.
@GHz: Sure, anything will look better when you zoom the opposing image 3x more. Using screens where the focus point is further away on one will obviously make it look better, even if they were zoomed equally in MS paint.
For people who don't understand what I'm saying, the GOW pics had the player standing further away and the KZ2 pics had the player standing closer. Apply an equal zoom and one is going to be ALOT closer, thus making the texture look like shit.
Nice try...
very nice graphics, perhaps a good PS3 games
@imskacore: I still do, I find the placement of the analog sticks on the 360 controller to be unnatural at best. Also I think the 360 triggers have too much tension on them, after long periods my fingers start to hurt. This is also true with the jewel type face buttons. Also the bumpers have a strange feel and shape to them. I use a 360 controller for certain games on my PC, but every time I come back to the PS3 controller it just feels more natural. Microsoft did a hell of a job going from the terrible Xbox controller to the 360 controller, but they still have a long way to go to match the dual shock. By the way, I have large hands and the 360 controller has always felt unnatural because it forces your hands into a certain position.
@hezz05: They lifted very heavily from Jin-Roh. While the art direction is certainly competent, I would hesitate to call it "stunning."
Control issues aside, I thought Sony showed a good show and had more interesting titles than this one. Killzone2 has a long way to go to prove to me it's going to be a good game, let alone a great game, after the first one and the debacle of 2 years ago. It's like if MS came out with an amazing video for Brute Force 2, I'd be like "fuck you" you'll be lucky if I even try this shit.
Show me more Echo, MGS:4, Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet, Infamous, or fucking even Unreal.
@SorenKier: I agree- the PS3 was meant to launch worldwide no sooner than March of 2007. The only thing that caused them to jump at Nov 2006 was the x360. MS got out early, but that ended up costing them $1 billion and even more in bad PR, just to get out early.
ooooh gray
@TOASTICUS
Of course, I'm well aware of that. It was a common comment during the marketing of Killzone on the PS2. Though I'm more referring to art-direction within game-design. Goggles aren't new. Glowing eyes aren't new. I'm just saying, the combination of the two got much more popular through the hype of Killzone.
And yes, I do find Killzone's design to be stunning. A beautiful blend between the industrial, urban, grim
