Could Mass Effect be the deepest role playing game for the Xbox 360 yet? Yes. Yes it could. The developers demoed a bunch of actual in-engine gameplay and in-game cutscenes for us earlier today, showing off just how far they've come since the last E3. We were impressed. And we can't wait for November.
Let's go over quick notes before we get to impressions.
• There is vehicular combat
• You explore on foot in squads of 3
• You can collect all the characters in the game (or just some) in one play through.
• Getting certain characters won't prevent you from getting others.
• Your vehicles have guns and jump jets for getting around
• Space travel is just for travel—there isn't space combat
That said, everything looks fantastic. The framerates are totally smooth (with occasional stutters that we'll chalk up to it being almost done, but not quite), and the characters look gorgeous. All those trailers you've seen are actually of in-game footage, and when you zoom close in on alien characters, they look just as good as any of the Unreal Engine demos we've been seeing for years. If not better. This makes sense, since it uses the Unreal Engine.
Traveling from planet to planet is simple and quick, and you do so by a galaxy map that you zoom in and out of from solar systems to nebulas to the entire galaxy. This zooming, and the galaxy itself, looks as good as any special effects on say, the show Battlestar Galactica. You can also do stuff like scan a planet from orbit, but if you want to do anything you'll have to land. The ship you're riding out in is also explorable. You're the Commander of the ship, so you call the shots.
As for going on missions and advancing the plot, you take a team of 3 crew members you pick up along the way. You have the choice of denying people from joining your crew if you want, which actually cuts out whole swaths of the storyline and changes encounters. It's KOTOR-esque, in the sense that who you take on missions actually matters. (A few key designers from KOTOR also worked on Mass Effect).
Dialogue is totally smooth, in that you have dialogue options that pop up on the screen while other people are speaking. Select an option in time and the in-game cutscene will actually seem like an interactive cutscene. Did we mention that the character models look great? They do. Especially in dialogue scenes. The action was very smooth and very cinematic.
They demoed a certain scene, which we won't spoil for you here, that actually had you making life and death decisions based on your dialogue choice. You can play the game as a good character, a jackass, or anywhere in-between, based on which dialogue options you select. Again, similar to KOTOR, but much more refined.
Combat is in third person, and you have the option of using either weapons or special skills you pick up. A lot of things can be customized in terms of weapons, skills, and vehicles, so you'll have breadth in the way you want to take on fights. You can even control your teammates and send them in first as a distraction (or as cannon fodder) while you sneak around and flank. The skills you use are kind of like magic, or dark force powers in KOTOR, and should supplement or complement your regular attacks depending on how you want to play.
The game's due in November, and judging from the completeness level of the demo they've got now, there's no doubt that the game will be fantastic when it's released.

Thank god I bought a 360, so I could play this amazing looking game.
Can't wait
KOTOR-esque can only mean good things. Could be a system-seller for me.
Looking like game of the year for me... which is odd because I don't usually play this sort of game.
I figured it would be pretty good but didn't think I'd want it. I do now.
Was getting worried about the graphics after seeing some of the videos floating around. Glad to hear it's still gorgeous.
I am getting myself a 360 in November for this game.
Come on price drop....
Wow. Seeing the gameplay vids for this makes want to get a 360. Looks like KOTOR to the next level.
I'm so excited
and I just can't hide it
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I want you. I want you
I NEED this game! November can't come soon enough...
I rarely buy a console a year in advance because of a single game, but this game was the biggest reason I bought my 360 last December. God, I can't wait for this game.
November can't come here quick enough...I'm seriously going to have to prioritize my game list this fall, theres too much coming out...
This, Halo, Two Worlds, and Bioshock (that's still coming out this year right) will be taking a good chunk of time out of my life this holiday season.
I hate Microsoft!!! How dare they make me play such good games?!! Don't they understand I want a life?!!!
Yummy...
Glad to see them back on track, can't wait. I couldn't get into Jade empire, the combat was just too dumbed down from Knights. I'm thinking I'm going to be an evil bastard when I play this, the temptation is to great!
The new interface for picking a dialogue line looks slick.
In terms of the depth, I can only hope that it is deeper then KotOR. IT seems too streamline, and with only two possible outcomes. Something like Chrono Trigger would be a better avenue for BioWare to tread.
I was pretty disappointed after seeing the E3 trailer. The gameplay looked as solid as KOTOR, but the story just seemed so god awful. Nevertheless, really looking forward to it.
I was wayyyy more impressed with the ammount of 360 games coming this year and their quality(Mas Effect in particular) than i was with the 2 or 3 decent PS3 games that might ship by Christmas.I'm betting those they saidd comig after Christmas could fall into anywhere in '08, maybe even appearing near next year's E3.Don't get me wrong Sony made alot of improvement over lsat year and i am looking forward to playing Killzone on my PS3 and might get the PS3 version of Haze also, but most of the other games they showed really didn't do much for me because the 360 already has better or will before Chrismas THIS year.
@okenny_unbanned:
Bioshock is coming out August 21. Betwen Bioshock, Mass Effect, GTA IV, Halo 3, and PGR4, I'm gonna have no tome to do anything else till probably in March 2008. I bet Mass Effect or GTA IV will probably get game of the year.
I'm gonna play it by being EXTREME !!
I'll be buying this the day it comes out.
Game of the Year right here
Can't wait for this to come out on PC.
DO WANT!!
Sounds like a spirtual succesor to KOTOR. I'll happy that I can now act like a jackass, not because I want to fall to the darkside, but specifically because I want to be one.
I just can't get excited about this game... I don't know what it is. bioshock, blue dragon, and lost odyssey all look great, but every time I look at mass effect I feel nothing.
Seriously, anyone that thinks Killzone's engine looks better than the Unreal 3 Engine is a fucking idiot.
Such ridiculousness.
@MehGinla: Mass Effect is being developed for consoles, where as the PC is getting Dragon Age. Of course, I wouldn't completely rule out the chances of it being ported, but look at Jade Empire, it took years for a port, and it's sold very badly so far.
I wouldn't count on seeing a PC version anytime soon, and remember, Mass Effect is a trilogy.
I bought an XBOX 360 on June 4th, 2006 because of Mass Effect. The first footage and presentation of it wowed me that much.
Everytime I brag about Mass Effect to my cousin, I say Mass Effect in a whispery, mysterious, low tone. Masss Effecttt. We puny humans don't deserve to say it's title out loud is my reasoning.
And finally this November I will get to play Masss Effectt.
The wait was worth it for Masss Efecttt.
Masss Efecttt. Shhhh.
@arashi:
How can you judge the story on an E3 trailer. Nice logic, bud.
@Atheist Jew:
I thought that the KillZone trailer looked like F.E.A.R. Not a bad thing, since that game looked great. Just not as good as the Unreal Engine. IMO
@WinterSnowblind: I on the other hand would count on seeing PC version not too far after the Xbox360 release. All the Xbox360 heavy hitters seems to be ported to PC these days, and that's good, no reason to buy unstable gaming hardware if you already have up-to-date computer.
I hope you can customized your character like KOTOR! I'll be pre-ordering.
I have been waiting so long for this game and this little tid bit has me drooling on my office desk lol
@WinterSnowblind:
Jade Empire sold very badly on PC because it was a very bad port. I have no doubt that this game will see it's way to the PC. The install base is considerably larger.
@thebluick: Opposite for me on Blue Dragon and Lost odyssey, can't really attach any anticipation to those two games, both in genres I really love done by designers I respect (designer?). Bioshock and Mass Effect however... I don't know, they just remind me of the old school american game days. The Ultima, Marathon, System Shock, and Fallout days.
@vibinvo: This was confirmed a long time ago. Go pre-order now. :)
@LORDofDANCE: If I want to form some sort of an opinion about the game, the trailer exists solely for that purpose. It is especially made for gamers to be hyped about the game, so I expect them to show the very best they have. And if the best they have was that, I'm not impressed about the story. Granted I simply can't know the whole story, so of course I'm only talking about what I have seen.
I was supposed to answer for LORDofDANCE, sorry about that.
@arashi:
My friend's working on this game. PC isn't even on the radar yet for this game.
I want this game as well. Haven't played my 360 in 2 and a half months. I really need to play this on a big screen though. I just don't think I can save up for a big ass TV before November. Let's see, which organ can I sell...
My 360 was purchased for Mass Effect. Everything else is just icing on the cake. Fucking awesome icing, but icing nonetheless.
@arashi: Problem with that is some companies just aren't very good at making trailers. I'm sure you can find a plot summary somewhere if you're interested though.
@jageroxorz: Kudos for the Pointer Sisters reference!
also, this will be the first RPG i've bought since KOTOR.
@spinal77: Yeah, going to be a really busy holiday season. I can't wait to play this game.
This is the reason I bought a 360 and the main reason, among many other wonderful, albeit smaller reasons to own a 360 this fall. I've been playing Bioware games since Baldur's Gate 2, and they have yet to produce anything that isn't of a ridiculously high quality.
They need to put more focus on making a game great on the Xbox360.
So far the graphic detail has been great but the amount of stuff on screen seems to get fewer and fewer as the games look better and better.
Does the combat still put you to sleep?
@Vietone: Are you talking about the more minimalistic HUD's we've been seeing in next-gen games? I'm not convinced that that's a bad thing.
Anyway, Mass Effect looks absolutely amazing - it's the game I want to play most right now next to Fallout 3. Unfortunately, Sony has sold me on buying a PS3 after this E3 so I'll have to make do with FF13. Square rpg's are good, but they're not *Bioware* good. At least I'll still be playing Fallout :)
If I had not bought my 360 for Oblivion, I'd be buying one for this game. More than a year of giddy anticipation looks like it is paying off. Thanks for the review.
I am actually more excited for this than Halo3 single player
Wow. Gatchaman.
For those that don't know and are as excited about Mass Effect as I am, you can now buy the prequel novel Revelation at all good booksellers. It's written by the lead writer Drew Karpyshyn. As for it's quality I cannot say as I am saving my copy for my holiday in late August.
If this and BioShock are as good is I hope and imagine them to be, then this year will be a landmark year for videogames. Viva next-gen!
RPG of the year. This game is going to be amazing, Bioware never lets down and they sure as hell aren't going to start now. Amazing.
Bioware, I want to have your babies.
