Last week we posted our nominees for the Game Critics Best of E3 awards. Today, the Game Critics announced which games were selected by all of the judges as finalists for the awards handed out for the show. Remember each judging publication gets to vote, then they take those votes, tally the scores and select the finalists.
Some highlights before you hit the jump:
Rock Band leads with five nominations, followed by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Bioshock with 4 nominations each
EA leads publishers with 14 nominations, followed by Activision, Microsoft and Nintendo with 8 nominations each
Xbox 360 most nominated platform with 38 nominations, followed by PS3 with 29, PC with 21 and Wii with 14.
Hit the jump for the full break down and to post your choices. Keep in mind these games had to be playable at E3 to be nominated, meaning no Killzone 2, no MGS4, etc, etc. The final list of winners will be unveiled on Tuesday, July 31.

Comments
Lots of Xbox 360 titles on the lists. Looks like MS and the 360 done something right.
Honestly Call of Duty did not seem all that special to me, it looked exactly what I expected Call of Duty to look like in a modern setting with standard next-gen graphics...
aw, doesn't look like Zack & Wiki is likely to win anything. shucks.
Something beat mario? O= lol j/k
Wow bioshock owned. Cant wait for the game.
It puzzles me the way they've got such general "genres"; no platformers, shooters or all the norms. Action and action/adventure. What, pray tell, is the difference?
@Charli3:
Too bad it sure as hell wasn't putting said 360s together...
@Yoko_Yasha:
BioShock will be another Gears of War, overhyped, overstressed, and in the end not as amazing as it is cracked up to be. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are overstocked with shooters, I wish they would try something different every once in a while like a certain company I buy from.
Hmm, I liked Kotaku's list so much more. I guess that's why I only read stuff on this site.
@UncleTonii: Bioshock is first person but not shooter. (See: SystemShock.)
And you are the first person I ever read saying Gears is bad... even on sony/nintendo camp .. O.o .. well you are entitled to your opinion. Back to fitting.
gears was over rated ( i have it), but its certainly not bad.
and sure the systems are overstocked with shooters, that doesnt mean they should get rid of the great looking ones (bioshock), but stop wasting time on the hundreds of average looking ones.
I just hope that Bioshock isn't headed for another 'best game no one played' award.
Woo hoo!
Looking forward to Contra 4!
Are those "best of show" games all shooters? (Except obviously Rock Band.)
And how does Zack & Wiki fit into the "social/casual/puzzle"? It's obviously an adventure game.
List fails.
@hass:
"Great"/"Average looking?" So, graphics are more important than gameplay?
@sxp151:
It's heavy on the puzzle elements of the game. I guess you could call it "puzzle/adventure."
Oh I get it. This E3 was so small that every game shown got on some list or another. And CoD doesn't have a lot going for it.
@sxp151: Most of the best of show games are RPGs...
@BPMΩ: graphics arent the only think you can look at, you can also look at the gameplay etc. its not like i can go to e3 to try them out for myself, so i look forward to what seems like it'll be fun, or more casually stated, "looks good". you know what i meant.
Now this is something Kotaku should take bets on. Every one make up their winner list and the winners get put into a drawing for some free promotional goodies.
A hell of a lot less confusing then E3 predictions.
@BPMΩ:
First of all, I personally think common sense tells us that he meant games that looked fun to play or that just kicked ass. Second of all, I think few people will actually hate Bioshock for what they did. I already know that there's going to be some completely retarded element to it that'll make the game hard (scavenging, anyone?), but that won't detract from the game. Yes, the game is gorgeous with a few minor problems (water hitting dude's back then flashing straight down), but that doesn't mean it's all about appearances. This is a game that's got a completely different philosophy, so I respect the game right there. I just can't wait for it to be released so I got rub against the figurine for a few days.
Well, anyways, congrats to all the games that made it, and boo-urns to all those that didn't. Loved it that Bioshock was up there, as well as WiiFit (HAHAHA!). Seemed like a reasonable list, but like someone else said, the Kotaku list was definitely better.
LBP is totally underrepresented there! :(
I will be very disappointed if Call of Duty 4 wins best of show. It will be clear that games press do not care about innovation nearly as much as they claim.
How can the gaming public get behind original games if the press don't in the first place?
@PlayingKarrde: By being capable of independent thought?
I really dont get whats the deal with bioshock or the other shooters, they are the same exactly FPS everyone has been playing for a decade, they only look better and have a little more options, im an FPS of the old times (BF1942, Quake3arena) so maybe the new FPS audience is differente now...
Wow, every game nominated for Best Of Show is available for 360. It's going to be a sweet year.
Heavenly Sword is sorely missed on that top spot...
People need to let go of the FPS thing a bit. There really are not that many FPS's on that list sure won a lot of catagories for the same game but that isn't uncommon. A 3d game is normally only one of 2 perspectives at its fundemental core 1st or 3rd person. You can call Metroid Prime a FPS but that is a a vague generalization to a great 1st person adventure/platformer. Really many of these games like Bioshock are adventure (in this case with some survival horror aspects) and are games with great stories and gameplay at a 1st person perspective. Sorry if that doesn't float everyones boat.
Unlike GOW, Bioshock looks to have depth to it.
@Hagglegaggle: I think we all know that that isn't possible.
But you do have to admit it is a bit hypocritical when publications and blogs and site etc write articles on how sad it is that studios like Clover shut down and how innovation should be encouraged and how little there is in the industry right now, and yet something like Call of Duty 4 is constantly up there as best game of E3.
Goooooo Contra 4! Can't wait for awards to go out next week!
@Frenzy54: Yeah, with the exception of some pretty smooth character animations and the ability for projectiles to penetrate walls (this effect ought to be standard in this generation), Call of Duty 4 didn't exactly blow me away with its gameplay or graphics.
@UncleTonii: Something different? You mean like Echochrome, WipEout HD, Littlebigplanet, Lair, Calling all Cars, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Afrika, White Knight Story? Is that different enough for you?
It is time to kill the fighting genre as a category in award shows. I still play them and I still buy the new versions, but it is a niche genre.
@Ludwig:
Uhm, yeah it is. Watch some gameplay videos and read impressions of the game. It's definitely a shooter.
@KONCHU
I agree. Anyone can look at a screen shot (or 3 minute trailer), and say "That's just the same as so-and-so".
--Imagine if you thought "Company of Heroes" was just another WWII RTS.
--Imagine if you thought "System Shock 2" was just another FPS
--Imagine if you thought "Psychonauts" was just another 3d platformer.
--Imagine if you thought "Wii Sports" was just another Tennis game.
It's amazing to me that so-called "gamers" dismiss (and miss out) on so many games because they dismiss these great games out of hand.
More's the pity for them.
@Konchu: They really should make a game where you simply talk about how all your friends are playing games where they shoot people. It could be a second person shooter. SPS! ;)
@Unastheslayer: Different from what? Except for Echochrome (of which nothing is known) and Little Big Planet (which sounds like a great game), nothing you listed is substantially different from anything out on the market today.
@Warren DeMontague: Psychonauts was just another 3D platformer. It was a fantastic one, of course, but there was nothing especially revolutionary about the mechanics. It was the level design and story that made it great.
And Wii Sports was basically Virtua Tennis with motion controls--it was the controller that was revolutionary, not the game.
Don't know about your others, but it really should be remembered that a lot of games, even great ones, are "me too" games.
Bioshock will suck just like all 2K Games that are FPS. I mean come on Prey sucked & The Darkness sucked even more.
Isn't Hellgate London coming to 360 also? If so, thats 5 RPGs in the top for 360... Pretty cool how the tides have turned...
@Jason85:
Yeah, because all 3 of these games are made by the same development studio. Oh wait...
@UncleTonii: I actually thought Gears lived up to the hype but I do agree that with you about Bioshock. I can't see why people are getting so excited over Bioshock compared to other games.
I truthfully thought Gears was overrrated. All the levels were completely linear, the gameplay was meh, the only WOW were the graphics. Bioshock on the other hand will own and so will Mass Effect.
@Charli3: Yeah and most of 360 games are for the other consoles too, except for RPG's, looks they are pretty average.
@Sparkamus: You might be onto something there a totally new Genre :)
@sxp151: Its really hard to make a totally new game since its all been done before. And I really think the point that Warren DeMontague was making was in the quality of the game if we closed are eyes and said oh look another copy of Mario 64 we would miss a well crafted game like Psychonauts ignoring its story telling and art directions.
@Jason85: Wow it is interesting we live in a world were around 80% average game rating across most reviewers = sucks. That is at least for The Darkness and Prey both of which I enjoyed playing through I admit the online play on those is weak at least The Darkness is now and Prey was when it came out but I have a friend that only plays the online games with a touch of the single player and Im the opposite in most cases. So maybe these game just aren't your thing but I'm definatly interested in Bioshock.
@migsho: Mass Effect, Eternal Sonata and Fable 2 pretty average? Hey dude, can I have what your smoking, must be some strong stuff.
Call of Duty 4 gets what it deserves
@Ludwig:
I never stated it was a bad game, I am simply saying it was not as amazing as it was advertised to be, especially without online play.
I might sound weird, but Mass Effect is probably my favourite out of all the ones that I've seen up there, mainly because of a vid I saw for it recently. It was just a conversation between the player and an NPC, but the the expressions and the flow of the conversation was really nice and fluid. It'd be amazing to play a game that made conversation genuinely fun.
Crysis was also looking pretty amazing. No surprises there, I guess.
Chris- [www.games-digest.com]
wow, why is anyone calling Bioshock "another shooter?" That's like calling Street Fighter 2 "another fighting game, or calling Starcraft "another FPS", or calling Res Evil 4 "another third person survival horror" game.
First thing that sets bioshock apart from Doom, Halo, and Unreal Tournament: Story. The game is crafted around a story, the NPCs (which can be enemies if provoked) live the story, the environment is the story, and audiologs of the dead, along with the half crazed splicers are all part of a breathing world.
second: Character progression. How many FPS games have you get stronger through the game by leveling up abilities? Using modifications to enhance equipment, or tonics to improve stats.
Third: Gameplay. You don't just go in and shoot, while you may get the job done, you'll use more resources than needed, along with unintentionally destroying something you need/want. You can set traps, use enemies to fight each other, or even ignore some enemies.
Fourth: Moral impact. How many games have you hold the life of a little girl in your hands, asking you to either exploit her for personal gain, or help her for her gain?
I could keep going, but I feel it'd be lost in the mindless "lol PS3 is teh super computer!" and "HALO IS BETTER THAN SEX" comments...
one last thing, I will give a prize to anyone who can tell me how to win at Little Big Planet. Until then, it's on the same level of Forever Blue of non games.
I'm surprised Rock Band isn't in best online multiplayer game. But I have to say I agree with almost all the nominations. But isn't Bioshock an action game, not an action/adventure?
I guess I am disappointed with the lack of respect Halo 3 is getting. I am not gonna go fanboy on anyone, but Halo 3 looks better to me then Bioshock... COD4 I understand why some would like this game so much, but it kind of doesn't make sense to be more hyped over the final Halo game of the trilogy. Saved films, forge, working on online co-op, so many more weapons, more vehicles, much better graphics then Halo 2 definitely, and one of the best story lines (reminds me of Star Wars how it is such an epic series)in a game ever. Definitely not hyped up enough yet already more pre-orders then Halo 2.. I preordered the week it was announced.. (i am 116 in line lol)... COD 4 looks good, but why would G4 give it best 360 game? it's not even an exclusive? I saw the same video as everyone else, and honestly I wasn't that impressed. I mean if they want to go modern, and compete with Halo they have to make a good game, but nothing stood out even multiplayer wise, but then again I have never played it, but still. I would rent it, if I like it then I will buy. I hated the fact that some critics were saying Halo 3 was "same ol', same ol'", Halo 3 is already better then Halo 2, but yet not a lot of hype at e3. Bioshock seems cool, but I am not seeing anything special about that game either. Nice graphics and cool gameplay effects, but otherwise it seems not that much different. G4 was only talking about COD4 and GHIII and Rock Band. Now GHIII to me seems like it will not be as successful as Rock Band (i want the mic and drums lol). Rock Band is like GH x4 lol. I don't see much more expansion for GH, nothing really new except soundtrack, nothing new game play wise, nothing truly special about it. Yet it is already getting rave reviews by everyone. I think Rock Band is already looking awesome cause you can go online and have a battle of the bands. Also they (Rock Band) have a bass guitar, GHIII doesn't have one. lol.. I was only really impressed with Rock Band and Halo 3 and Mass Effect. Otherwise really nothing else stood out. Surprised with the critics choices for the best of e3 nominations, but hey... Personal opinion...
Hmm Mass Effect from my understanding (could be wrong) wasn't actually playable? At least according to Gametrailers and i've yet to see a real hands on preview from any site. Now by playable do they mean at least someone playing it on front of you? If so doesn't that mean Killzone 2 is able to be nominated.
360 made a good showing. Especially good to see it having all but one of the games in the RPG nominations (other was PC only).
Maybe this will shake off talk of 360 being "all about the shoooting".
-Perros-
This will probably go on to show us how detached game critics are from the average consumer.
FPS getting all this praise is ridiculous. There are probably 5,999,990,000 people out there who are ready to play games where they aren't shooting germans, aliens or anything else for that matter.
Come up with some new ideas and then get an award.
That list shows that fighting games are a dying breed. Virtua fighter is good stuff, but the other 2? That's just sad.
