I had the driver my credit card, which he swipes through a machine. Five times. No luck, he says. "This card is no good."
No the card it fine.
Giving him another card, I say, "Try this."
He does. Five more times. Goes through, and I've broke into a jog as make a beeline for Sofmap.
On March 2nd, at this time, there must have been about twenty or twenty-five people in line. There were chairs set-up and Chubby Face was talking about Gundam. For some eery reason, no one is in sight. Perhaps everyone is at Yodobashi Camera? Or could the hardcore fanboys already gotten their Lites. I breathe easy as I approach Sofmap.
That's when I see the sign.
The DS Lite is sold out.
It's like a sock in the rib cage and suddenly, I feel sick to my stomach as dread and disappointment fester inside. There's a contest, but no prize. Worse has gone to worser.
I poke my head into an open Sofmap doorway.
"Pardon me?" I say.
Sneakers squeak on linoleum and a Sofmap jacket appears.
"You're sold out?"
"Yes. It was far more crowded than last time."
Apparently he remembers me. Mental note: stick out less.
"What time did people start lining up?"
"I'm not sure, but there were already a lot of people here at 1 am. Tons of people."
"When will you get your next shipment?"
"We don't know."
"Do you think next week?"
"All Nintendo is telling us is that they are making the DS Lites as fast as possible."
"Thank you very much," I say, bowing slightly as the Sofmap jacket disappears back into the store.
Probably see you again real soon.
Someone is watching me. I turn to see two figures lurking near the vending machine. Tough looking guys at that, and they are headed right at me.
