Dreamcast Gets Heart Extension

Just when the Dreamcast thinks its long battle with console obsolesence is over it gets dragged right back in for one last big score. Shmuppets just refuse to let the noisy white box die. I was pretty sure McWhertor closed the lid on it, but now Japanese company Warashi has announced Trigger Heart Extension for release in February 2007. It's a port of the Naomi arcade game Trigger Heart Exelica, which has a really nifty enemy capture mechanic, seen below.

I love my Dreamcast bunches and bunches, but it's been 8 years people. The system is getting tired and cold. Oh so cold. It can't feel its legs anymore and just wants to close its eyes, just for a little bit.

  • Hmm, I want it.

The dreamcast will never die. ever.

  • I think this just shows the lasting power of the system. It was FAR better than the PS2, it just got beat down when the piracy went mainstream.

Sega did it right. It just didn't get the respect it deserved.

  • I wish my Dreamcast still worked. Project Justice owns.

  • Hey now, that's harsh. There's nothing wrong with the dreamcast. It just needs a little love, is all.

That game looks awesome. It's got 2-d gameplay, the shooter aesthetic, and man oh man, I love that synth heavy music (very nostalgic, reminds me of Mega Man X)

I'll need to hunt down a few of these gems, so my import-bootdisc won't simply be my "Shenmue II" Bootdisc.

  • How can you say that you should just let the dreamcast die? If they were still making SNES games, are you saying that you wouldnt want it? Eather way, I LOVE my dreamcast, I am always excited to new games for it. I would also like to see Sega make a console comeback! But, I'll keep dreaming.

  • Up until the last boss, I thought that, finally, I found a shooter I have a reasonable chance with.

  • I remember they did this with the Sega Saturn too, they released a new Saturn game in freaking 2001!

Takes a Shmuppet to know one. O_o

  • "The system is getting tired and cold" oh no he dident FANBOYS ATTCK!!!

btw the dreamcast did even worse here in the UK, I only knew one person with one and that was beacause he could run coppied games

  • 9 years? didnt it come out in 2000?

  • 9/9/1999. I believe it came out in 1998 in Japan. So, yeah. Not really 9 years.

  • That looks awesome...I am getting a copy.

  • It actually came out in 1999 (9/9/99...what an awesome launch date!) so by all accounts it's 7 years old which isn't much older than PS2, so in all fairness I hardly see the age comparison there. That being said, I love the fact that new Dreamcast games are being developed :) Any idea if they're coming out here in the US? I doubt it...but that'd be awesome!

What would it mean if a Dreamcast game topped the top PS3 game this season? That'd be the ultimate (not that it'll happen).

  • I'm not a big shmup fan (and I hate myself a little for using the word), but that looks pretty sweet.

I might have to track down a used DC for that. And to play through Shenmue again. And maybe to try to get ahold of Seaman, just for the hell of it. >.>

  • My favorite late arrival was Street FIghter II for the Sega Master System in 1996.
For the record, that's 10 years after the system's release & 7 after it's demise. (Or slow death since the system was selling well in Europe & South America).

  • I still have my Dreamcast in a cupboard. I kept it just in case they ever released Shenmue 3 on it.

Still, according to someone at Sega, Shenmue 3 is finshed and just needs porting to a next-gen console, the 360 being the most likely candidate, although Yu Suzuki has since said development on it has been halted for the time being.

I think its fair to say the DC was the most fun console I ever owned (Quake III rocked on it)!

  • I'm going to crack open "Typing of the Dead" on my DC in honor of this.

  • Love the audio, did they lift that from some Japanese porn?

Actually released in Japan in November of '98. I was a year off. Fixed now. ;)

And I don't want the system to die! I want it replaced with a smaller, leaner, quieter version. Who wouldn't buy a redesigned Dreamcast?

  • i swear there was another 'new' dc game released like a year ago. i thought lik-sang (r.i.p.) had a news bit about it. i looked for it in akiba, but i couldn't remember what it was called. there's gotta be a site that lists all the releases by date.

  • I must say that the dreamcast is my favorite system of all time.
However, there are certain games that should have come out that never did, like nights.

Either way, live long and prosper DC!

  • ....that actually looks like it'd be hella fun.

I might import that. I love (and miss) the top down shooter genre.

  • I might have to pick this one up.
    ...Rush 2049 for life.

  • It's lucky they can still release games on the Dreamcast, as otherwise you'd probably not see this on a home machine. It runs on Naomi hardware in the arcades, and as such the porting cost is minimal compared to rewriting it for another architecture. They probably wouldn't sell enough on the PS2 to warrant the cost.

I think there's another on the way too - sequel to Radilgy. As long as the Naomi continues to survive, the ports are likely to keep coming to the Dreamcast.

  • Oh my God.
    Must. Have. Game!! O_O

I lived for Ikaruga, and I think I like the idea of the play mechanics on this a little more.. but barely. Holy hell, this is coming to my house no matter what.

  • The Dreamcast is dead. Long live the Dreamcast!

  • The sound effects and the voices remind me a lot of Super Puzzle Fighter.

    Maybe it's just me though.

  • Given that the Wii isn't directly competing with Sony and Microsoft, who says there isn't room for another small, quiet, affordable system with innovative games?

    Bring on the Dreamcast Lite!!

  • wow that looks amazingly good. this is... the kind of game i've been wanting, but could never get, because i didn't know what it was. Now to buy a cheap old dreamcast....

i think a new dreamcast might do pretty well. Hype it up enough like the wii and ps3, and there might even be fights and shootings, which makes it intense, and makes people want it more. like the.... dreamscape. no that's lame, something new. They could make a whole new powerstone, and some kick ass sonic games. Buy back sega!!!!

  • system11, i think under defeat is the follow-up title to radilgy, and it's also the game i was thinking was the new one released recently.

  • <3 Dreamcast

It was so much better than the Playstation 2. The VMU was a great idea too.

  • Hey hey hey, c'mon over and have some fun with Crazy Taxi!

Another DC thread and I'm going to plug Record of Lodoss War again. Find it, play it, love it.

  • Let's start a petition to get a DC emulator released legit for the 360! The architecture's not too dissimilar so I'm sure it's feasible. I'd love to be playing Shenmue and Rez on my 360...

  • Toneman you are so right, Rival Schools 2 was the SH1T!!!

I had the japanese copy, but it still was one of the best 3-D fighters ever. I'd place it second after soul calibur on DC, that was serious.

  • Sorry Connortreacy

I'd bet nintendo gets this one if any one does. This is a new game and ikarugi was the last great shoot-emup. This won't be a 10 dollar download this will be a Metal gear 49-39 dollar purchase if not more if it's not ported to a current console. I could see this one working alot better on the wii.

Man I love games like this and I hope more games like this come out on the Wii as offical games 2d is not dead! Now where is a good beat em up? like double dragon2 on the nes or some thing?
