Digital Leisure just sent me this swanky personalized postcard to remind me that Dragon's Lair has made its way to the Blu-ray, and yes the Playstation 3.
The classic, but increasingly dated, $50 game will run at 1080p and will include "exciting special features."
-Spectacular new transfer directly from the original film. -Digitally remastered in High Definition - Full HD 1080p Video and Extras -For the first time in dramatic 5.1 surround sound that immerses you in the action -Arcade Authentic with a watch feature to view Don Bluth's stunning animation -Frame by frame digital restoration -Full length visual commentary from the creators! -All new interviews with creators: Don Bluth, Gary Goldman and Rick Dyer
Maybe for $30, but no way would I pay $50 for that. Though these Blu-ray screen do give me a hankering to play the game again.

Maybe if they added the second Dragon's Lair and Space Ace in the package.
I love Dragon's Lair. I still remember the original arcade version at my local pizza joint and thinking that 50 cents was a bit much to play it when everything else was a quarter. It was still awesome, though. However, not $50 awesome.
Thankfully $50 is just the MSRP. It'll probably be available at most stores for around $34.99.
Looks just as fun as ever -- which is to say, not at all.
And a new generation of gamers get to experience mediocre animation and bottomless frustration, now in HD!
But seriously, Dirk pwns.
Can everyone who fell for buying the DVD-ROM version of this exchange it for this one? That bloody thing didn't even work in Windows 98.
I want Digital Leisure to go under so that a responsible company could buy these licenses and make the games worthwhile again.
Most overrated game ever. It just...won't...die.
Just a FYI, it was also announced on HD-DVD for those interested. Unfortunately, the same steep price:

Just pick up the 20th anniversary DVD version. You can find it for $20 bucks at some places, it includes Dragon's Lair, Dragon's Lair II, and Space ace . . .
So you get *just* Dragon's Lair for $50 or even $34? I could see myself paying $5 for it, maybe $10 for a collection bundled with Dragon's Lair II and Space Ace, but the games aren't worth any more than that.
@Applekid: Seriously, could I get a version that works, please?
I know this isn't exciting to some of you, but it would be pure nostalgic indulgence for me. I actually had my mother make me a Dirk The Daring costume for Halloween when I was in second grade. It went with my Dragon's Lair lunchbox.
Using DVD remote controls... hmm that will be accurate.
If you're in need of a decent fix - track down DaphneX and a soft modded xbox.
wow, they just keep flogging this dead horse every couple years. they really just need to stop already.
This doesn't look any better than the DVD version I own. Pass!
Considering it should take very little time and effort to put a game from 1983 onto a new medium I don't see how they can justify the MSRP price.
It's like trying to slap a virtual console game onto a blu-ray disc and selling it for 50 bucks... ain't gonna happen.
I saw the Game Boy Color version of the game at EB yesterday. Should I have snagged it? Sounds like no.
I can't really stand Don Bluth's work. Titan AE was a monstrous disaster, and this thing... what a random bloody game it was. Press buttons at the right time to play the pre-animated sequence that follows. Which buttons and at which times? Who knows! It's trial and error gameplay at its most insidious, and no doubt it ate up a lot of coins from frustrated arcade gamers back in its heyday.
Hearing that it's coming to Blu Ray... is really something we can all do without.
I am not aware of the Game Boy version you speak of, but the console "3D" game is a wholly different game than the laserdisc/DVD original that this is.
Ah, A Favorite Blu-Ray Feature: Having More Shit Pop Up During The Film.. and i actually mean that in a good way..
But Having A Video Commentary WHILST Playing Dragon's Lair? eh.. Too Much To See And Do At The Same Time..
so, When's The Blu-Ray Space-Ace Coming?
I friggin' love Dragon's Lair. Sure it's one of the worst "games" ever made but the animation is great and the noises Dirk makes, especially when he dies, are just hilarious.
It's odd because not two days ago I was wondering when they'd get around to slapping it on Blu-ray.
$50 is nuts for what is essentially a video though. It shouldn't cost any different than what Blu-ray movies cost. If I saw it for $20-$25 I'd grab it. I'm in no rush to pick it up.
Actually, if they were smart they would offer it as a download for the PS3 network, Live, and possibly Wii (thought doubt that one). Of course then it wouldn't be in HD, woo. hoo.
@mjsmitho: The DVD version was $2 used at Moviestop a couple weeks ago. Regular cartoons really don't benefit from HD the way live action does anyway. Live action still depends on the source. I seriously doubt they're adding hi res textures.
I can only play it at an arcade stand. some things just have to remain as they were in the past. You know, to preserve the awesomeness of playing it back in the day.
This will rock, I'l buy this, no bullshit! All you nay sayers will surely miss out on something great, but then again you dont own a PS3 lol!
Just play Dungeon Escape instead. It's not as good, but it's free, and you can play it on the Wii! :)
