Rock Band Gets Healthy Dose Of Bowie

Bowie is good. This is a universal fact. Singing, of course, but also acting (Labyrinth, The Prestige), and lending his creative influence, voice, and likeness to video games (Omikron: The Nomad Soul). While the Bowie pack for Rock Band, available today via Xbox Live Marketplace, might not contain my personal favorite Bowie tunes, it is Bowie and that's good enough for me. Well, technically it's Bowie. Two of the three songs in the 440 point pack - Queen Bitch and Heroes - are cover versions (or Fauxie, if you will), you do get David's original recording of Moonage Daydream, and if you are really particular you can pick and choose your songs at 160 points a pop. The pack isn't available on PSN yet, but I can't imagine it will remain unavailable for much longer. Oh, and just in case I forgot to mention it: Bowie.

  • This is quickly becoming the most expensive video game of all time. I'm better off buying a pinball game...

    Bowie always was a trend-setter

  • I wish Major Nelson was announcing Major Tom. I guess instead I shall fill my hard drive space with these oddities.

  • I'll be getting Heroes and that's it. I'm trying to save my points for the albums (if they ever show up), but it's getting harder to do that.

  • Today I'm going to freak out in a moonage daydream awwww yeahhhhh

  • Where i can buy "Omikron: The Nomad Soul"?, I freaking love the demo. Whas like a System Shock with GTA with Robocop with Moebius with Nealstephenson.. "avant la lettre".

  • but also acting (Labyrinth, The Prestige)

    don't forget Zoolander!

  • David Bowie = Music Idol.

And yes, he did have an amusing cameo in Zoolander- good catch "TheExcitingone".

I very much adored him in Omikron: The Nomad Soul. Which, despite it's HUGE HUGE HUUUUUGE problems and bugs (Dreamcast Version)... was somewhat enjoyable if you used a guide...if only to see the David Bowie personification/character/figure sway and move to the music.

One of those games that starts with a bang and ends with a whimper.

  • @Tonx: No kidding -- this thing is crack. I wonder how much money is being chewed up by credit card fees on the microtransactions. I only buy points in the smallest increment I need, and I pay with an Amex card which has notoriously high fees for merchants. Not that Microsoft and the Rock Band people care, but this is a win/win situation for the credit card companies I'd imagine.

  • You've got one "o" too much there.

    Should read "Bowie is god"

  • I have a lot of interest in Bowie, mostly due to a girlfriend in high school once giving me her ultimate compliment: that she liked me as much as she liked David Bowie.

I wonder whatever happened to that girl.

  • I can't stop staring at his left eye.

  • I am totally gay for Bowie. I will be forcing my PS3 Rock Band owning friend (I has a Wii), to purchase this pack as soon as it is available.

Personally, I'd wish they'd move beyond the Ziggy stuff, but apparently the masses consider that period his most rockingest, to the detriment of fans of the rest of his vast catalogue of various styles and genre.

  • is this the only pack today?

    I want some slayer :(

and I want a Dillinger Escape Plan song so I can feel overwhelmed.

and I want some Cure. I WANT TO BE ROBERT SMITH GOD DAMMIT!

  • Yeah, i have the omikron full game lying around. It was an amazing game for its time. Had a lot of interactivity and gameplay forms (it had a 3d fighter engine, etc). The music was also amazing. It was fun to buy a "CD" at a store and listen to it on your "Personal Data Arm Bad Thingy"(tm)

I think i remember trying to play it in XP, and it not working or something. Its been awhile. For those interested, It was also on the sega dreamcast.

  • @lotkrotan:
    David Bowie > Robert Smith

  • Image of Cchrist Cchrist at 09:57 AM on 11/27/07 *

I've got the nomad soul still lying around somewhere. It was an absolutely brilliant game! Wasnt called omikron here though...

  • @lotkrotan: there's a release calendar. this stuff was announced a few weeks back. until what you want appears on the release calendar, don't expect to be seeing it pop-up for download.

  • @AgainstOne: and here it is:

  • Bowies in space!

  • It seems like these guys are hung in the 70s. Bowie and The Who are ok, but I'm 32 and I want more stuff from my time. Some 80s-90s rock. I even would like to see some newer stuff like Shinedown, Breakin Benjamin, Seether. Most of all I want Ozzy, Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, and PLEASE Alice in Chains.

  • No "Bowie's in Space"?

Isn't it cold out in space, Bowie? Does the space cold make your nipples go pointy, Bowie? Do you use your pointy nipples as telescopic antennae to transmit data back to earth?

  • @dan: Flight of the Concords?

  • @AgainstOne:

wow, some pretty week packs coming up. I hope that they surprise us with some good tunes in between (unplanned.) I mean, those could be confirmed, with other songs/packs being worked on without a certain deadline to meet.

    @GrapenutsRobot:

If by > you mean better, that's a matter of opinion.

But did David Bowie defeat Mecha Streisand? I rest my case.

  • Where is the Starman? The Stardust? Life On Mars?
How can I properly rock without knowing the fate of Major Tom?

  • I may be the only person who loved it, but the "Everyone Says Hi" level in Amplitude was always my favorite. I know that I am not the only one who looks at Bowie as some kind of mythical wonderful creature, like a unicorn or a griffin. He has been making amazing music since the 60s and he still makes relevant, even cutting-edge music.

Isn't it cold out in space, Bowie?
Do you want to borrow my jumper, Bowie?
Does the space cold make your nipples go pointy, Bowie?

  • @dan:
Classic! I was writing mine while you were writing yours!

  • @GrapenutsRobot: David Bowie > Robert Smith > David Bowie Covers.

I mean come on. Why all the covers? The first three packs were awesome but I bought Fortunate Son without knowing it was a cover. Royally pissed me off.

    Sorry. Had to vent.

  • @Kenofthedead: Starman would be a pretty bad guitar song, Ziggy was in GH1 and I can still hold out hope that they'll bring it back someday, but I'm happy with new ones.

Life on Mars? doesn't even have a guitar in it.

Apparently they thought about "Rebel, Rebel" during the creation of the game, then (correctly) realized that it would be pretty boring to play. I think these are three really great Bowie tracks, though not quite the full Ziggy Stardust album download I'd always hoped for. I'm just glad he's showing up at all.

  • @elsiluro: Magnificent!! I applaud your pun sir!

I love Bowie! If Rock Band had a release date in Ireland, perhaps I could get a little more excited about getting these. Even still, they could have picked better tracks, but any Bowie is good Bowie!

  • Theres no such thing as a "healthy" dose of Bowie. ;-p

  • "Personally, I'd wish they'd move beyond the Ziggy stuff"
@Cruz: Hey, "Queen Bitch" is from Hunky Dory. But it's a cover so I don't know if I'm going to buy it.

  • All this DLC just after release is proof positive that instead of putting the music in the game, they want as much money as they can get. Unfortunately, this strategy is working.

  • sweet, covers of Bowie cost as much as master tracks of Bowie.

Anyone still not convinced that there's some money gouging happening on behalf of EA/MTV?

  • @joeymojo: There's always gouging going on with EA.

  • Bowie absolutely rocks my nuts right off my body.

  • @swirldude: It's remotely possible that this content was created after they cut a final disc and sent that off to Microsoft for cert. And then off to manufacturing.

I don't mind paying some extra dosh for new content, especially when the game I'm buying that content for feels complete - which Rock Band does. 45 songs for 60 bucks (plus 13 free bonus tracks) isn't that bad at all, especially considering how many were not covers.

I know that the sequencing of RB tracks is more difficult than GH tracks, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that they have a system in place that has their end to end time down under 3 weeks per track - with the ability to have several in the pipeline at any given time. So there's plenty of reason to believe that this new content is really that - NEW.

Still, at this price point, it's not for me, no matter how great a track is.

  • Rock Band is taunting me with its good DLC right now - LET ME BUY YOU DAMMIT. *Sigh* Shortage what?

  • I don't even own Rock Band...but Bowie is godlike...just gotta hack the live network and download it ...because it is .....Bowie

(PS: Having seen him on the Reality Tour in Atlantic City with only 3000 of us...I will say again, nothing compares to this man...NOTHING...)

  • You forgot that Bowie is the (unofficial) inspiration for Leon in RE4.

  • @elsiluro: For the record, I got the Space Oddity mention even if no one else did.

    Good one.

  • @edb87: Those songs are pretty old. Late 60s eraly 70s. We get covers because sometimes the Masters are either, non existant or no usable. Doin't whine just to whine, think about it for a second.

  • @noelix:
Is there a Rock Band shortage in some places? I was out at my Target last Friday at night and they had about 8 XBox 360 ones on the shelf. This is a Target that is packed on Black Friday, so if there was a shortage, I would expect that these would have been snapped up.

  • @JayTapp: Curse this job keyboard that I hate. Also, curse the no edit button.

  • i only got heroes. i like the song, but it doesn't translate well to rock band.

i would avoid this pack unless you're a huge bowie fan.

  • Bowie is one of my favorite music artists and here I am with only a Wii...

  • Silly me, meant Ashes To Ashes, not Life on Mars.
Silly BBC tele shows of the same name confused me for a second.

  • Wake me up when they offer us "Magic Dance".

    :)

  • Finally, something to interest me in the most expensive game ever.

  • Now they need to add Supermen, Saviour Machine, and The Man Who Sold the World. Oh and then after that the rest of his catalog. As long as we get more Mick Ronson, though, I'll be content.

  • @FanDam: Ugh, I fail my Bowie knowledge. I should have phrased my comment as referencing early 70's Bowie.

@kingofallcosmos: I'd never considered Bowie in that way, but I like it. It fits my adoration for him.

  • @KingGorilla: Good point. The Man Who Sold the World tracks certainly have that Rock Band feel. All the Madmen also.

  • @supercrap: unless you're counting DLC, Steel Batallion still holds that mantle.

    [en.wikipedia.org]

Though, if you're a PS3 owner you do still need to cough up extra dough to have 2 guitars...

But if you're a PS3 owner, you chose... poorly.

  • @joeymojo: Yeah, I was generalizing. There are plenty of Neo Geo games that are more expensive than that, but rock band is pretty steep amongst new games. Being as value conscious as I am, no, I do not own a PS3. ;)

  • I loved Omikron on Dreamcast, I never got too far in it though. Now I need to paly it again. It and Maken X both had this really cool vibe about them.

  • Hook me up with I'm Afraid of Americans.

Love that song. And that video.

  • @Cruz:
Yeah. That whole album is just made for the game. I'd really dig Hunky Dory as well even though it quieter and has a few song that would work as well as other. I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to play Andy Warhol and just for that I'd shell out the points.

  • No one else is remotely capable of running the Guild of Calamitous Intent.

  • @kingofallcosmos:

I haven't been able to find 360 Rock Band yet, although I have found 2 PS3 special editions in a couple of different stores. At this point, I might just get the standalone version to use with the X-plorer I already have and worry about the other stuff later. Of course, the same goes for GH3 with the wireless guitars right now as well (PS2 and PC versions are everywhere, PS3/Wii versions are out there if you look, and about the only place you're going to find the 360 version is for $180 on eBay.)

  • I don't know how many people have played Omikron, but any day of the week I'm up to rocking out to New Angels of Promise.

  • @joeymojo:

The covers are likely less profitable for EA / MTV / Harmonix, since they've got to pay for studio time and production and cut checks to the professional musicians involved. It's not like the cover performers are just hanging out at the local bar for karaoke night and they're not recording them in someone's garage on an 8-track. Master tracks are probably a lot more preferable to Harmonix, since it's just the programmers working on them, the music's already there.

DLC means, in the long run, that we get a better song selection, because the licensing fees aren't coming out of a shared pool. Not every artist is going to charge the same amount, and there's only so much they're going to budget for each disc-based follow-up. You toss in someone like Zeppelin, who costs exponentially more to license than your 'average' band, and you'd end up with a Rock Band 2 disc with less songs than the original or more than $60 retail for a comparable 50-60 song collection.
