Grateful Dead Confirmed DLC for Rock Band

Rock Band today announced that there will be 18 master recordings from the Grateful Dead released as downloadable content for Rock Band following the game's release this holiday. Among the songs will be "Truckin'," "Uncle John's Band," "Touch of Grey," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Casey Jones."

I assume this will be released as a single Album pack, but no word on pricing. Color me worried. Hit the jump for the official press release.

Grateful Dead Join Super Group Line-up Coming to Rock Band™

Harmonix and MTV Games Partner with Rhino Entertainment
to bring 18 Classic Grateful Dead Master Recordings to the Rock Band Videogame Platform

New York, NY - September 5, 2007- Harmonix, the leading developer of music-based games, MTV Games, a division of MTV Networks within Viacom (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), and Rhino Entertainment, a division of Warner Music Group (NYSE:WMG), announced a deal that will bring the legendary band Grateful Dead to the highly anticipated music videogame Rock Band. The iconic group is making 18 master recordings from its diverse catalog available as digitally distributed game levels following Rock Band's release this holiday season. Among the songs available will be the classic Dead tracks "Truckin'," "Uncle John's Band," "Touch of Grey," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Casey Jones."

"Grateful Dead's unique fusion of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, and jazz challenged traditional musical boundaries and pushed the limits of creativity to produce a signature sound that is undeniably their own," stated Paul DeGooyer, MTV's Senior Vice President of Audio, Home Video and Electronic Games. "With an enormous legion of fans all over the world, Rock Band will give players a chance to interact with the music of these beloved rock pioneers and experience what Grateful Dead did best - jam from the depths of their souls."

Distributed by Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS), Rock Band is an all-new platform for music fans and gamers to interact with music like never before. The game challenges players to put together a band and tour for fame and fortune - all while learning to master lead/bass guitar, drums and vocals. Built on an unprecedented partnership with artists, record labels and music publishers, the music featured in Rock Band will span the full range of rock music and include original master recordings from the greatest songs and artists of all time.

"Grateful Dead, with their 30 year career and their timeless music, are the perfect addition to Rock Band," says Mark Pinkus, Rhino's Senior Vice President of Strategic Marketing, Custom Product & Sync Licensing. "It's going to be a blast playing along to songs ranging from the Dead's earliest hit 'Truckin'' to their final hit 'Touch of Grey.' I'm confident that Rock Band will be instrumental in introducing kids to the magical music of Grateful Dead."

Grateful Dead's journey ignited in San Francisco's Haight and Ashbury district during the psychedelic '60s. The band, well known for constantly touring, continued to spread their message of peace and love for another three decades with a devoted community of fans known as Dead Heads, many of whom traveled the country with them. Earlier this year, the Recording Academy awarded Grateful Dead a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for its contribution to the evolution of rock music.

Grateful Dead is the latest artist to join the vast musical downloadable multi-track master offerings of Rock Band, joining the list of epic artists such as Metallica and The Who's iconic Who's Next album, the first full album scheduled for downloadable content, in addition to the dozens of on-disc tracks spanning every genre of rock from alternative to classic to heavy metal.

Rock Band is slated for release on Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system this Holiday 2007 in North America. For more information on Rock Band and Harmonix Music Systems please visit www.rockband.com and www.harmonixmusic.com.

  • I wonder if Rock Band will come with enough mind-altering drugs to make Grateful Dead sound good.

  • If the deal is made why not just include it on the damn disk!? I think they have talked more about what we can buy later then what comes with the original $200 purchase.

  • Casey Jones is one of the best songs they ever did.

  • aww i sent this tip in like 10mins ago XD

im not a fan of the dead but this gives me hope for the other DLC.maybe one company will make promises they might keep!weekly new songs ftw.

  • I don't think it's a good sign when there is DLC for games not even out, it doesn't bode well. Rather then DLC expanding a game after purchase it seems more like deliberately not adding content for sweet, sweet profits.

  • Imagine if they were still around... LSD would still be popular.

  • Yeah, I couldn't care less about the Dead either, but it's nice to keep seeing their commitment to downloadable content.

I like to think this stuff will be somewhat reasonably priced too since there will be so much of it. At the very least they've confirmed everything will be available as single songs. No overpriced bundles like GHII.

  • @DOX: If I don't like Gratefule Dead, why should I pay for their album when I buy the game?

  • And I now have yet another reason to buy this game. Casey Jones and Touch of Grey should be pretty fun to play. Hopefully they put Mexicali Blues on there as well.

  • What is happening between Rock Band and Guitar Hero right now is a perfect example of why competition is a good thing. We know they were going to put good songs in these games, but it's clear that both companies are now pulling out all the stops to try and attempt the most amazing musical collection ever seen in a game. It like Gran Turismo for rocking out.

My decision will still be based on whoever has the most Queen songs, though.

  • @whitey9: Grateful Dead + drug reference = LOLZ

very creative little quip there buddy, haven't heard that one before.

  • @Truepatriot:
I had a link to the AP story hours ago! Ha!

    .... kidding.

  • @hoos30: it should be included in the price of the game like the rest of the music.

  • "I assume this will be released as a single Album pack, but no word on pricing. Color me worried."

Um. It's been confirmed that individual songs can be downloaded from albums for some time now. Stop being worried.

@d0x: You clearly don't understand how that would completely disrupt the balance of the game and makes no sense to force everyone who doesn't like a band to have 18 of their tracks in the game.

  • @d0x: FYI: Rock Band is $60.

  • Oh how I long for the purity of gaming blogs before Guitar Hero mania dickjived it all up. This fad is so lame it almost makes me hate music.

  • I really hope DLC for Rock Band is cheap (aka less than $5 for 3 songs) otherwise I may have to start whoring my self out in order to afford all the songs I'm going to want.

  • Not a huge Dead fan, but it's still pretty cool. I would like it more though if they had one song in the normal game and then you could download the rest of the album, like I think they are doing with Metallica and The Who.

  • @Madeira: Just write a Greasemonkey script to not display posts with "Rock Band" or "Guitar Hero" in them if it bothers you so much. Voila!

  • @CreepyP: You're a sassy little minx, aren't you?

  • How about some music that the modern people will want to listen to? Establish a customer base with people you know will buy the game with songs they'll like, then reach out to a crowd who probably hasn't touched a electronic in years and try to sell them music.

  • i want to see more indie rock, hardcore and post-hardcore stuff.

i fear this stuff is turning into "Clear Channel: The Game!"

  • Rock Band, as much as I'm going to play the ever loving crap out of it, is SORELY lacking Metal. More metal DLC announcements, please, Harmonix.

  • @d0x: Because by this point in time, the song list is probably already long put to bed and Harmonix are just working on finalizing? The last two months of a game is no time to start adding whole new songs.

  • Love the Dead, but they are a jam band and I really wonder how the hell that would work with Rock Band? I want my 30 minute Dark Star dammit!

  • @Madeira: So you're basically just posting in this story to whine? Carry on, the rest of us will be thinking about how hard we will be rocking out when this game comes out.

  • @whitey9: Well played, sir. I can honestly tell you that I have nothing to say to that, I just feel a little wierd.

  • Well I for one love the dead, and LSD... so count me in! How many blotters of LSD come with rock band anyways? I need to know in case I need more for my Rock Band Party come this holiday season. ^_^

  • As if I needed any more reason to pick this up....

@Perrinbar: I'm sure they are the studio tracks, rather than live versions. Not much noodlin' on the studio recordings...

  • @tk.: Yeah I could do that, but it's much more fun to complain about something than actually do something about it. heh you wouldn't happen to have a link to a script like that, would you?

  • Here's one that filters out stories on Reddit based on regular expressions: [userscripts.org]

I'm sure it could be appropriately modified. :)

  • @landu13: Um...a lot of us "modern people" really like older music like some of the songs they've put in the GH series, and now Rock Band. Hell, some of us even prefer it over a lot of the over-produced, generic music coming out recently. But to each their own, of course.

Don't worry, there's plenty of new music in the game to keep you happy, and I'm sure they'll be even more by way of DLC.

  • Ugh, the Grateful Dead...just horrible. Well I hope future downloadable content is more promising.

  • Better then telling your fans your going to have DLC and then giving them 3 chemical romance songs and a buncha stuff from the first game...

  • Nice, does that mean you'll be able to use two drum kits?

  • You know for all you people who don't like the Grateful Dead, to each his/her own, but respect what they did, and respect that if the Grateful Dead never existed, nor would a lot of bands today. Personally I'm so happy that this is happening, now if they had some Beatles as d/l content I would be one very happy person.

  • ...sure, I'll play some Dead. As long as its, you know, free.

*Patiently awaits Rust in Peace, Reign in Blood, and Master of Puppets/...And Justice for All DLC*

  • @eXo: QFT. Sorry about the 2X post, folks.

  • @landu13:

Ummm... a lot of "modern" people love classic rock. It's a lot better in my opinion than the crap most bands call music now a days.

    @MrSadistic:

Grateful Dead gave some of the best rock performances of all time... i know this sounds crazy but many people actually enjoy their music. But hey, maybe they'll put some of that emo stuff that kids listen to now a days.

  • Hell yes, I love the Grateful Dead. Had some of the best shows I've ever seen and some incredibly complex music. Key and time changes galore. Can't wait to jam with my friends and family, this could get them into it. Hope they add some Mexicali Blues, Queen Jane Approximately, and Tennesee Jed.

To everyone who doesn't like GD, simply don't buy it. I'm sure metal is on it's way, just hasn't been announced yet. As much as I want some metal for this game, I can't wait to buy this pack.

  • What did one Deadhead say to the other when they ran out of pot....this music sucks.

    that joke never gets old....never

  • @swarmster: FYI: It's a paperweight without any instruments.

  • im a fan of the grateful dead, but even more so of the who. its like my favorite bands r all gonna be playable on this game! its almost as good as if they made a classic rock version of guitar hero. heres to hopin thats wat guitar hero is!

  • SWEET!

They should offer Scarlet > Fire, Playing in the Band, Help > Slip, Deal and Shakedown Street. I might have to spend the big bucks so I can pretend I'm dropping bass bombs like Phil, or tearing up a solo like Jerry.

  • i just have one question for all of you who feel the need to express that they dislike the dead. i personally love the dead... obviously a lot of people do saying they dedicated a whole channel on sirius for them. anyway, my question is this... do you really have such a pathetic life that you have time to waste posting a comment on your dislike? Nobody is forcing you to download their songs. download what you want and don't download what you don't want. it's that simple... as my screen name says... GET A LIFE!!!!!

  • i also wanted to add... I am so happy that rockband is coming out with dead songs... that is the main reason i bought the game!!!! i am sick of loud obnoxious no talent songs that i have to play over and over again.
