It's a crapshoot, really. Some cool games get English localization. Some bad ones get it. Other never do, staying forever out of most Westerner's hands. While tiny percentage of really neat titles already with loads of English never get a US/Euro release.
Take DJ MAX. It's a Korean rhythm game (think DDR for the PSP and the PC) that appears to have been produced with the outside world in mind with the menu almost entirely in English, but the game has yet to achieve beyond import status. The video above is on the easiest setting — 4 button mode. It goes up to 8 button plus analog. It seemed poised to ride in Lumines' wake, but sadly, never did.
The game's company, Pentavision, just announced DJ MAX 2 for the PSP and, at the moment, Korea. Publishers, are you listening?
DJ MAX 2 Announced [Ruliweb, Thanks Torokun!]

DJ max portable was an awesome game. Anybody who has a decent importer around should pick it up.
They did release Beatmania on PS2 for the US, which the originator of all these rhythm games.
DDR is horrible playing with the joystick...
Why play it on a miniscreen with a joystick?
This reminds me a lot of ParaParaParadise in the arcades (especially the Korean songs). In that game there were sensors for your right and left arms and you could either do motions high or low (different sensors would sense your arm position) and the game looked almost identical. Of course making a home version with four sensors would be tricky, but I'm sure it could be done in the future with say Nintendo's Wii =)
That being said, it does look fun but honestly I still would take Ouendan over this (though I still wondery why Ouendan didn't sell better in Japan the first time around).
I think it helps that the music is really really good. Personally if they published it for us westerners, i would pray they left it all intact.
I really enjoy the import. It's probably my most played PSP game... sans Valkyrie Profile. The difficulty is a bit crazy... and it does take a while to really get proficient at it, but when you do it's fantastic and definately one of the best rhythm games I've ever played. Also - it was a LOT of great songs (the farm one with the animal sounds - I'm looking at you!).
This game was total joy to play on the PSP - probably the best game out there (and, since the menus are all in English, all the better!)
Sadly, I can't get to the web page, but I hope they do the same thing so it's easy for me to import. That'll make 3 PSP games I own - one more and the toaster is free!
It's a beatmania clone.
Wasn't there some stage in the game where they mocked President Bush with a charicature, though? Not that I've got any problem with people making fun of the worst president in decades, but it might be a bit of a hinderance in US localization.
I haven't played much on the PSP... but is the ergonomics any good for rythym games? my hand is cramping just watching he video.
Pink Godzilla has this in stock at their online store
I'm a proud owner of DJ MAX Portable. It's an amazing game; I can play up to a level 12 on 8-button mode, but after that, it's pretty much just button-mashing insanity.
Great to hear about the sequel. The only downside of this game is that is has the PC version of DJ MAX's earlier songs, which in my opinion, aren't nearly as good as the current songs.
Found it: http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/2309
Good call on DJ max. Regarding music: if changes were to be made for westerners, this guy should be considered: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJxIWUKM0hQ - LOLZ
I can't move my feet that fast much less my fingers....must be that those Korean's have much more finger dexterity :-)
well... that got me a hell of a lot more interested in the psp now. lol
I played DJ Max on PSP. GREAT GAME. A great PSP import to recommend for everyone.
It's not exactly accurate to compare this with DDR. Instead, it's more like Beatmania kinda game. The interface is very similar, IMO.
While I personally regard IIDX as superior in terms of music, DJMAX PSP videos (from Ruliweb in fact) were what got me into the rythmn music game genre. If you can't get it for the PSP, the Japanese PC version is just as fun and contains all but about 5 songs from the PSP game for free (there are premium songs which you have to buy, and updates happen pretty regularly).
I think Ashcraft compared it to DDR to comment on its genre. A Rhythm Game.
But, yes, gameplay wise, it's more like Beatmania series. But, works brilliantly with PSp's button settings.
This game is fun, but it's damn hard :D
That's fucking crazy... if that's the easiest setting, I'd die...
I can do standard on DDRmax and stuff, used to push out some heavy songs...
the drum things I can't do, and the dj ones I can't do(arcade)
that looks SUPER fun, though! just looks really hard... I thought that'd be like, medium.... O__O
You play DDR on a controller so you don't look dumb failing brand-new songs you're not familiar with yet, save your stamina, and basically unlock the game ASAP.
Mmh, I love that game. It's SOOOO hard though! @_@
Easily my favorite game on the PSP. Can't wait for the 2nd one!
That looks fun. PSP needs more gems like that and less FPS/Stealth action games to be considered a fun little machine. Or at least the American audience needs real access to more gems like that. Come on guys, ride Elite Beat Agents coattails and get your arse over here!
Best...PSP...Game...Ever.
It is definitely for people experienced with rhythm games... easy is not so easy... and it becomes incredibly hard. Excellent replay value, tons of songs and modes and things to unlock... Definitely import if you have a psp.
They also just announced a DJMAX Portable "International Edition" where all the menus and stuff are in English. Sames songs (+1) so if you own the original, updating for another $50 may be too much, but if you don't have it, head over to play asia or similar and make sure you order the internation edition.
nah it more looks like pop n music, it almost looks the same the, but the only difference this is in korean and not japanese. But both have really cute pop songs
This is less like DDR, and more like beatmaniaIIDX for PSP. I play on the PC version frequently and I also own the PSP version. If you are questioning where you can get the PC version (its a MMO game btw), visit http://djmaxus.bemanistyle.com . Every DJMAX fan should see this site.
Is Pentavision the Korean division of Konami/Bemani? I wasn't able to find anything on http://www.pentavision.co.kr/ that noted konami or bemani which is strange.
If this isn't some Korean Konami spinoff, it's totally a Beatmania/Pop'n ripoff.
I own the prestige box set. Highly recommended since you get the soundtrack with it and the music is way better than i expected.

It's a neat game, but I think it's way overhyped. IE: it's fun, but I'd rather play something else most of the time, even though I really like rhythm games like Beatmania 'n Guitar Hero 'n such. YMMV.

They released Para Para Paradise on the PS2.
I would like to try this game. I have the IIDX control for the PS2 and some of the beatmania games. It's fun.
DJ Max for the PSP is based on the internet/PC game that is popular in Asia, particularly in Japan and Korea. It's unfair to compare this to Beatmania since it's really a different game. The five key setting really feels like you're playing the piano, for example (not that non-piano players could tell the difference) and how well the music sounds depend on your timing.
