GameSetWatch points us to a terrific article over on Hardcore Gaming 101 that explores the history of Capcom's other fighting game, Darkstalkers. As they note, Darkstalkers never attained the kind of widespread attention as it's brother Street Fighter, but it still has quite a strong following nonetheless. Morrigan and Lilith alone have inspired countless cosplay costumes and fan art. I share GameSetWatch author Simon's love for the Darkstalkers series as I have been monster obsessed since practically falling out of the womb.
Lots of goodies await you in Hardcore Gaming 101's article including loads of screen shots, character descriptions, MP3s and a compendium of all the game's sequels. So, if you are a Darkstalkers fan you'll definitely want to check out this extremely comprehensive and interesting article.
Darkstalkers History [Hardcore Gaming 101]

I read somewhere once that Morrigan was the single most popular female game or anime character in Japan, ever. Of course, I have no statistics to back that up.
Great games, Darkstalkers. Hsien-Ko is awesome. Gotta love those chinese hopping-zombies.
Love this series.Having a Darkstalkers game at launch was the reason I bought a PSP. I still play it all the time. Baby Bonnie Hood is hardcore.
I don't much care for fighting games in general, but I've always liked the style of Darkstalkers. They were also always my favorite characters in Super Puzzle Fighter II. Particularly the cat chicky.
You know what this world needs more than anything? A super puzzle fighter game for XBLA. Who can I talk to about that?
the only one i know is the teleporting chick in marvel vs capcom.
Darkstalkers was one of the only games that I felt that I was missing by not buying a PSP, so when I eventually did buy one, it was my first game. It was a great purchase and it is beautiful on the PSP screen. After playing Fighting Evolution, I would also like to try out Red Earth, but it never got a major release over here.
Bring back Bishamon. Bishamon kicks your ass, kicks your mom's ass, and digs up your ancestors' graves to kick their ass too.
I wonder if they mention how Morrigan's sprites haven't changed at all since her debut...
THIS IS OLD NEWS. The article has been up for a while. Notwithstanding, Vampire Savior 2 has always been one of my favorite fighting games.
Jon Talbain (Gallon) and Felicia has had a fan service in the were/ anthropomorphic communities for years.
Shame it never picked up anywhere here in the states.
CPS2 Emu***ion on my GP2X has rekindled my interest in the Darkstalkers series. It's a fine series indeed, but admittedly, the chaotic animation and bland supers keep it from being Street Fighter. Though, I understand Capcom's desire to do a fighting game that wasn't just another SF clone. It's a classic, but in terms of head-to-head competition, it's just lacking that certain...I don't know what.
@Huginn:
Once again Heya
I've seen some felicia fanart myself. Disappointing I haven't seen any Talbain As he seems vastly more intresting.
When I first saw the character I assumed Darkstalkers was just some weird Anime I've never heard of. It's frighteningly de ja vu to actually hear that is a fighting game... also kinda make me sad I missed out ^.^
I posted about this first, not gamesetwatch, but whos countin'? lol

Hardcore 101 is such an awesome website. spent many hours on this site... their Ys article is the best the web has to offer!
Another vote for Vampire Savior 2 - been a fixture in my arcade collection for a while.
Great post. I absolutely love this series, and Hardcore 101 always delivers the goods. Might have to pimp that site out on my blog tonight. :)
Ah, missed an interesting (nerdy?) bit of trivia about the Saturn port of Night Warriors. It was missing frames of animation however if you beat the game or entered a code or did something with the options screen you could turn on the full animations. I think you could only fight a character versus him/herself but it was still pretty cool at the time.
Loved that game. Fun read. And now...sleep.
This would definitely be hit on XBL Arcade...
Just a quick FYI. I figure I should mention that the author does the webcomic "8 Easy Bits" found on http://www.8easybits.net/ , so give it a read!
Hasn't that article been up for a while?
Doesn't matter, though. It's nice to see Hardcore Gaming 101 getting some more exposure, it's an awesome site.
