Video Games - The Whitest Medium?

Scribe Thomas Wilburn has an excellent piece at The Escapist this week about the profound lack of non-white protagonists in video games. Wilburn observes when the main characters are black, "they usually fall into the same stereotypical categorizations: athlete, criminal and/or rapper."

Are games being devleoped for white suburban kids and ignoring the racial other? Why is there a profound lack of non-white protagonists in video games? Are white heroes still the "safest" hero socially, because they can perform acts that might be used to vilify the racial other with little social consequence?
