GameStop Manager Killed During Robbery

mariettapolice.gifA robbery at the GameStop on Cobb Parkway South in Marietta, Georgia left the store manger dead. A man apparently entered the store around closing time, waited for the last of the customers to leave, and then pulled a gun. Using duct tape the suspect tied up the store manager, Matthew Chery, as well as a fellow employee, as well as the employee's father who arrived during the robbery to pick up his child from work. The suspect escaped with video games, DVDs, and consoles, leaving the three bound with tape over their mouths. Between the time the robber left and the police arrived, the 21 year-old store manager had died, possibly as a result of the duct tape gag, though police are still investigating. The suspect fled the seen with his loot, stealing Matthew Cherry's red 2004 Honda Civic LX in the process.

I contacted another local GameStop location for comment this morning, but they were busy on a conference call about this very incident.

This is a GameStop I visit on occasion, so I am very interested in seeing justice done here. Police are currently looking for any information that will help them catch the robber turned killer. Hit the link below for a video that includes the suspect's description as well as details on the car he used to flee from the scene. We offer our condolences to Matthew's friends, family, and co-workers.

  • This is really sad. My heart goes out to Mr. Cherry's family.

I hope they catch the lowlife that did this.

  • Why can't we all just....get along?

  • My condolences.

    That's horrible!

It just goes to show you that it can happen anywhere. Is the world just not a safe place to be?

This is brutal. It's unfortunate, but people that work retail deal with this looming spectre of possibility everyday.

Condolences and well-wishes to the family ...

  • Don't get me wrong, the robbers are scum anyway. But they're probably kicking themselves now for this.

  • :( My condolences to his family. I hope they find whatever piece of trash did this and toss him in jail for a good, long time.

  • who robs a gamestop honestly? Better question how do you plan robbing a gamestop do you sit there and just go THIS IS THE BEST PLAN EVER?!? sick people i tell you sorry to hear about this :(

  • That is really messed up. Maybe the guy had a heart condition or his air was cut off since it doesnt say he was shot. I bet the robber didnt plan on killing anyone and now he is going to pay the price. I hope they catch this guy. My condolences to the managers family.

  • Condolences to the Cherries.
    :(

  • @SuperMaxZero:
Seriously. Their idiocy just turned them from robbers to murderers.

  • Dude, that sucks. My condolences as well.

  • Condolences to the victim's family and friends, and good luck to the police in bringing these guys to justice.

  • People suck. T_T

  • this is beyond shocking. i honestly can't believe some people's stupidity and greed sometimes. for god sakes, you don't NEED to rob someone at gunpoint.

video games and dvds are luxuries, (and readily available in stolen form on the internet), how does this still happen?

  • As a gamestop manager as well, we all understand that when we walk in the door, we might not go home again. I was personally held up twice during the 2 weeks prior to the holiday last year. I send my condolences and prayers to the family and I hope that these wastes of flesh are caught and have to pay dearly for this. No VIDEOGAME or SYSTEM is worth the life of another.

  • I wish there was more I could say than my condolences. Sadly I am at a loss.

  • I feel sick...

  • i work there. Matt was a very cool guy..it makes me sick what this guy did and I hope he is caught

  • ..Oh God. I knew Matthew. I don't live far from where this just happened.

  • That's the store I picked up my copy of the orange box from.

    Crazy times we live in...

  • I've always been fearing being gagged, as my terrible year round allergies mean that I would suffocate. Unless I get bit by a radioactive frog sometime. Not going to happen.

Thus I can sympathize. I hope the idiots that pulled this get caught. I request a manhunt. Okay that probably was not appropriate, sorry...

  • what a horrible way to die.

  • I can't imagine how awful it would be to pick up your loved one from work, only to be bound and helpless as you watch them die. My heart goes out to Mr. Cherry and his family.

    Unbelievable :(

  • My Uncle lives in Marietta. That really pisses me off.

Also, not to be a dick or anything, but things like this have happened for as long as people have owned things. We're not really living in such "crazy times", we're just dealing with the fact that people have done, do, and will do really nasty things to eachother.

But damn. Gamestop? That makes me feel sad.

    Jesus fucking christ. :/

My best wishes goes out to the family of the victim.

  • Fuckin' Bastards ... If you need money go get a real fucking job. I hope they catch that asshole!

  • I'm glad we live in a time where it's pretty hard to get away with stuff like this. They might even have video of this guy buying duct tape at Home Depot earlier in the day or something like they did with that fake-runaway girl.

I worry for my father, a retail exce, who spends his time visiting stores all day.

  • Fled the "seen"? Really?

But regardless of my naziness, this sucks. Condolences.

  • Eery. I was just in that store yesterday. The area is kinda sketchy, so I can't really say I'm shocked. It's right next to a Wal-Mart, and you can't go 10 feet in that parking lot without being approached by some unsavory people.

Definitely a sobering moment. If I had gone into that store a few hours later, it could've been me...or anyone. My condolences to his family. I'll be on the lookout for that red Civic.

  • There really isn't any need to gag hostages. I hope this guy is brought to Justice.

  • Hopefully the police can track the systems he took if he goes online ... Gamestop usually have the serial #'s in their data base and they can go from there.

  • Wow I've been too this gamestop, really sad news. Hope this scum gets caught

  • I'm not very religious, but I will pray for the victim's family.

  • My thoughts to his family and those who knew him and worked there. Such a terrifying and awful thing. Be strong everyone! :_:

  • Really sorry to hear this Mike... It sounds like they did everything right and didn't resist which is the right way to do it. My condolences, and please keep us updated on what happens here.

  • that sucks, my condolences to the managers family and the gamestop corporation.

  • @SuperMaxZero: He is probably doing more than kicking himself right now... If he has any sense, he should probably turn himself in right now. He only meant to do a robbery, and figured if he got out of the store, he was free - as the police wouldn't try to hard to find him. But now that it is a homicide, the police are going to be putting a lot more effort into catching him, and i'm sure he didn't cover his tracks for a homicide. And he would probably get reduced sentencing if he comes forward, admitting to the crime, but saying the death was accidental.

  • All that for some video games and a few DVDs. If the man is caught, I wonder if he would think it was worth all the years in prison.

  • I only expect things like this to get worse. The video game market isn't one just for kids, and many older people know not how to behave. It could of happened at just about any Gamestop location. The two closest to where I live and work are not exactly in the best of areas, but I'm amazed it has yet to happen here.

Though I'm still not for Gamestop, the act itself sucks. Let's see that this guy is dragged in so they can pay for their crime.

  • Death by duct tape? That was unexpected.

  • Just goes to show, the stupid will continue to live as the innocent die.

The guy probably thought no one would get hurt, and is probably scared now. Good. Be scared. I hope you see the disgust of everyone and turn yourself in.

Your actions are condemned, and we can only console those who have lost someone in their lives. A young man nonetheless.

I wish his family well, but know that nothing- sometimes not even justice- can make them feel better.

  • this is whole worshipping of stuff is getting rediculous. i mean camping in front of stores for the right to be the first to spend cash on some trivial piece of hard- or software or the dubious honor of being the first to own a such a massproduced item isn't exactly sane but now there are more and more stories of robery and homocide over videogames ... wtf is wrong with this world? can't people get their shit together anymore. all those news of people acting like complete morons is making me sick to my stomach.

  • I worked at the EB Games/gamestop in the mall there in marietta/kennesaw a couple of years ago and remember when this store opened...during the year I worked there, there were 2 other robberies at gamestops near the one I worked at.

It's very unsettling to think that it could have happened to me when I was closing or opening the store. I hope they catch the guy and prayers go out to the victims family.

  • Come to think of it, the death probably wasn't an accident. The Walmart, which is never NOT busy, is very close to that GameStop, and if he had shot a gun, there would've been an instant response. A silent death by duct tape was no accident.

  • So sad!

    Karma will catch up.

  • As a former mall gamestore employee (EB, but it's all the same company now anyway), this really makes me sad. I know what his workweek was like, the BS he put up with from corporate and the daily ins and outs of the position, and then he ended up getting killed for it all. I have no doubt that he deserved better, and am all too familiar with the kinds of human refuse that visit these and other retail stores daily who have a big enough lack of conscience to commit such a deed. My condolences to his family, and I truly hope the culprit is caught soon and booked for murder.

  • god bless that manager...

and may justice win in this case...

is jack thompson involved in any of this?

  • Wow I used to work at the mall near there at the Gamestop (then Software Etc.) on Cobb Pkwy. That area is rough.

I don't care what anyone says about Cobb County, it's sketchy at best. I went into my old store at the mall for 20 minutes and had my car broken into less than 75 yards from the food court entrance, the busiest entrance at most malls. I also worked the Dreamcast launch there and someone got mugged taking their system to their car.

And the finally, and perhaps best indication that Cobb county sucks is... there is a traffic accident every 2.3 seconds in the county (I couldn't find the article archived on the net, but it was published in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution between 01/01/2006 - 04/01/2007). The area just has problems and the lack of any want to involve themselves with the rest of the metro areas transit system just lets the area fester.

  • I feel for the families involved in this. Its a shame that people would do this. People see this sort of stuff in movies using duct tape to bind people so it may not of been the intention of the robber to actually kill heck he could have had a replica gun for all we know but he performed a crime that has took a life and I pray justice is swift for the families sake.

  • I was a gamestop manager once and my wife still is. I fear things like this when I know shes closeing by herself again to save payroll hours. I agree with KODEC the man went thru too much for his job to die like this. My condolences to the family and friends.

  • I too was shocked when I hear this in the news this morning. I am a parent and could not imagine the pain and anger and the feeling of helplessness that Mr. Cherry had as he sat there with his dying son and not able to do anything about it. I hope and pray that they catch the scumbag that did this and punish him to death. Was it really worth it over some video games and consoles? What a terrible shame. To bad I finally had a tip show up on Kotaku, and it is about such a terrible thing.

  • It doesn't make sense that this poor guy died. I'd be interested in knowing what the cause of death was, as last I checked, duct tape isn't lethal. I'm sure the robber didn't intend for the victim to die, so if the robber sees this story, he's probably going to take a big crap in his pants. I hope they catch him - only if and when they do, he likely won't get what he deserves.

  • My condolences go out to the family.

However, to those people who are saying that video games aren't worth someone else's life or that video game fanaticism is going too far, the guy probably is going to try selling it, no less out of the back of the Civic or something to try to make some cash, most likely to fuel a drug habit. People who want to steal goods for personal use usually shoplift, try to sneak stuff when nobody's looking, or work at the place and sneak the goods out.

  • MY condolences to the family of MR Cherry.

I can already see Jack Thompson preparing a speech for tonight's broadcast on CNN. He makes law students like I sick.

  • Things like this are a hit to the video game community as a whole, I feel, because it affects all of us; we all frequent these shops, and many of us even work in them. I spent two years working in an EB Games and fortunately we were never robbed in that time, but the possibility is always there. The first lesson of self defense, apart from safe practices, is compliance, but I guess this goes to show that even if you cooperate and comply, things can go wrong. What a tragedy for such a young man to lose his life in such a way. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

  • As a GameStop manager, I am very saddened by this. It hits very close to home, even if it's not literally close.

Just like the other guy said, you go in to work and hope nothing bad happens. Same goes for when I have to close. You better believe my eyes are peeled open every night I close.

Unfortunately, this brings the number of GameStop managers killed on duty this year to 2. Sigh, what the fuck.

Complete condolences to the family, and to the poor part-time co-worker and his father that had to live through that bullshit. Hope the sick bastard gets caught.

  • I work at a GameStop, and closing is creepy sometimes.. This sucks, and it sucks knowing that people in the world are garbage.

Condolences to Matt's family and friends.

  • Ack, I've probably been to that one near closing, since apart from big titles, that's when I usually go out to get new games. With how often I'm in Marietta, it wouldn't surprise me if it was that store.

Regardless, people dying over videogames is always stupid. With cameras, witnesses, and a known getaway car, he probably won't be free for long. Bastard.

  • Even though I'm sure the dumbass didn't mean to kill anyone, I hope he rots in prison.

My condolences to Matt's family/friends, and to the other unfortunate victims.

  • Jeez, my heart goes out to his family and friends. I used to live in Marrietta and while I didn't know any of the current staff (presumably) I've shopped at that location. It's not in the greatest part of town but I still wouldn't expect something like that. What a shame. It's such a nice town too, right outside Atlanta and I had a blast living there.
