Masochistic fans of the classic Midway arcade game Spy Hunter will be thrilled to learn that the delayed film adaptation has ascended from Hollywood development Hell, with Paul W.S. Anderson replacing former director John Woo.
Pro wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was previously slated to appear as the movie version's titular spy and starred in the Midway game Spy Hunter: Nowhere To Run, a title originally planned to coincide with the theatrical release. It's unknown if Johnson, who really nailed his role in Doom as a guy who shoots stuff, is still attached to the project.
Anderson, mostly famous for the Resident Evil and Aliens vs. Predator flicks, is also hard at work ruining/remaking Death Race 2000. No word from Variety on whether these projects will interfere with his work on the Castlevania film.
We can always hope.

The excitement is excruciating.
I am preparing the first box of poo to ship.
Now who's with me?!?
Isn't The Rock a retired wrestler? The game's main point is the car. Will they make that? Or will thwey go all James Bond or something?
I just want mindless action. Don't tell me they can't make mindless action work!
This is certainly some excruciating excrement no one should be excited by.
Man, if this dude ruins Castlevania, I will seriously flip out. Completely unacceptable.
I think Paul did descent job with Mortal Kombat 1, although it was far from a masterpiece, it's still okay.
But seriously, do not fuck with Castlevania. That shit is holy stuff.
Huh. Didn't even know that production was halted.
They've already got a hard enough time trying to sell me on it, but if the Peter Gunn theme isn't in it? Then no, sorry.
Is that a dude on the right in the picture? That's some major cleavage going on, regardless.
Anyone else get 5?
5?
I count 5 sarcastic comments in the original post. Do I like...win?
Well, he DID get me started on thinking about American Express...
...or am I thinking of the wrong director?
The best thing about the recent Spy Hunter video game was the contest Midway ran on their website back in August. I won it and got a brand new 2007 Saturn Sky from them. I still have the documentation from Midway to prove it.
Ooo! I am pleased with this director change. Mostly because his name is awesome.
Paul W.S. Anderson
Surrounded by the auditory equivalent of a good Sci-Fi author is a pair of excellent initials.
Cut Paul W.S. Anderson some slack, he is like Orson Wells or Martin Scorsese compared to Uwe Boll. Also he bangs up on Milla Jovovich, surely that counts for something? I'm not gay but I'd have sex with him just to invoke that "last 7 partners" rule.
I would say that Paul WS Anderson is the Uwe Boll for film buffs, but Uwe Boll is the Uwe Boll for film buffs. Regardless, Anderson is a terrible director who is just like Boll when it comes to destroying video games. Maybe they should team up on a movie...
Hope they don't screw it up... but the odds are good that they will. $10 says that the movie is horrible.
The rock is a decent actor, I think... I think with most people it's the "halo and horns" effect... Pro Wrestling is full of bad acting, so they project bad acting onto him when he does real acting... He's no genius, but he did good enough in things like the Rundown.
Granted, i never watched Doom, but even the best actors can blow with a mediocre director (Boll's movies, anyone?), so an average actor doesn't have a chance. Directors will make or break movies...
What I'm surprised about is that I forgot there was a recent Spy Hunter game...
by "good enough" I of course meant "well enough"
