On the way to the register, Chubby Face is a step behind me, giving me directions on what I should photograph.
"Get a close-up of those DS Lites," he tells me. It's like he wants to take the picture.
I'm next. The man behind the register motions me over, but Chubby Face cuts right in front.
"Take a picture of me," he says, thrusting his money at the man behind the register. "Like National Geographic."
"Are you going to use it?" he asks as I step towards the counter. I notice Sofmap is still promoting their re-imported American DSes. Smiling, I take out my money and hand it to the guy at the register.
He puts a DS Lite into Sofmap bag and hands it to me. Mission accomplished.
Heading out of the store, I pass a stack of old friends.
I exit the store. Chubby Face is nowhere to be seen. I thank the Rotund Gentleman, who says we'll probably see each other around Den-Den Town.
Cell phone rings. It's my wife.
My son and my wife were sound asleep when I left. If he hadn't been getting better, the day's events would have played out differently.
"Hello?"
"What are you doing?"
"I just bought the DS Lite."
"Congrats."
"How's the kid?"
"Much better. He just woke up. He's sitting right here eating cereal. When are you coming home?"
