You can't keep a good PS3 down, at least according to some extreme play testing by PS3Vault. They started out with running a PS3 for 4 days in a van, gradually letting the temperature drop from 40 degrees to 0. Here were the results:
We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees , this was maintained for the last 24hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden , blackout to the screen, this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen. 108hours in and still working fine.Impressive. But electronics usually do great in cold environments. What about when they stuck the PS3 in sauna with temperatures reaching 120 degrees for 24 hours?
Strangley enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, and to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64hours at 110F, the console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colours.Considering that the PS3 was actually being playing games or Blu-ray movies, this performance is absolutely incredible. You can say what you want about programming for the Cell, or the PS3's currently weak library of games, but Sony has built the thing like a tank. How to kill a PS3 Console - Is it really possible ? Yup, gotta love it
Well if I happen to buy a PS3 then take it outside and plug it into an outside plug then a sudden snowstorm brakes out I know my PS3 is safe!
this just makes me and my constant dusting/cleaning/making sure to turn off if i'm taking even the shortest break of my 360 kind of sad
Wow impressive as hell.Looks like cockroaches have a new rival
Why you do this?
Now to test the 360 the same way. . . .
I knew the thing was built sturdy as hell, but 64 hours at 110F with 95%+ humidity?
I believe the technical term is inde-fucking-structible.
the cold test isnt needed at all, computer parts love winter.
the heat test is pretty impressive.
You know ... I don't believe I'd read 1 story about the PS3 having any sort of hardware issues. I remember the first run Playstation and Playstation 2 having some issues ... but I haven't seen 1 thing about the PS3 having any sort of hardware issues. Nice to see some good Quality Control out there. Hell, even the Wii has a good track record so far.
What really throws me off is how Microsoft seemingly did a great job with the first Xbox, hardware wise ... and the 360 is a damn nightmare. Sure, we all know it was rushed ... but the fact that they still can't get the damn thing to not break is crazy.
So it's nice to know that when I do get the cash to buy a PS3, it's probably not going to crap out on me ... like my 360 has, twice now. Sure ... a warranty makes you comfy and all ... but there's no excuse for shoddy workmanship/design.
Take notes M$oft ... Sony makes a more reliable console than you.
Now, lets try teh 360
Bwahahahahaha
I'm surprised, but kudos to Sony.
@Lachoy: Really a light wind and a stern look is all thatl be needed for that test...
Experience counts when making hardware. My day one PS2 was still functioning perfectly when I traded it in, and my Ps3 will be functioning when I trade it for whatever is next.
Not that I'm surprised, though confirmation of what I already suspected gives one a nice piece of mind. PS3 is like owning a home, yeah it costs you a lot but its WAY worth it in the long run.
I'd think it'd be pointless to test 360 the same way, LOL. The POS dies at *room temperature* for chrissakes, no sauna required!
@dead_red_eyes: Some people've had bad experiences, but not many at all. Mainly just a faulty console out of the box. Just a couple stories, but, yeah. They got their consoles replaced for free and quickly. Just lettin' you know I guess.
@PapaBear434: Unless your testing crew a pair of clowns dressed like pimps with sledgehammers.
Then all bets are off.
Thats good to know. Cept with the PS family Im by far more worried about the lense / drive motors than anything else.
@dv8godd:
You stole what I was going to say.
Does anyone remember before the PS3 launch how one overheated and shut down during a pre-release party or some crap and everyone said that the PS3 was gonna be an overheater? Yea, that was a wrong assessment to be sure.
Cold? As long as there is not condensation, the PS3 would actually run better at low temperatures.
My cusing once tunr on my N64 for 8 days playing ISS64 and it didnt die, and that impressive considering that the room was like 32C degrees cause it was summer...
Great story but how about some more hot zombie pix.
XBox 360: sucky hw, great sw
PS3: sucky sw, great hw
Sure would be nice if the Sony hw guys worked for Microsoft and the Microsoft sw guys worked for Sony.
Too bad.
I'm not surprised, i've had my ps2 til day one and it still runs great, haven't had any problems with it, ever. Hell i'm sure if i started up my ps1 it would work too. Nintendo is pretty good as well with consoles, my regular nintendo starts at least... but dies about 5 minutes in :( My n64 however still runs great. I'm quite shocked at the failure rate of 360's, but mine hasn't died yet so knock on wood.
@Mpalm:
i went thru like 4 ps2`s because of crappy disk read errors =(.360s still going too
i had one of the ps2s on for 48hrs straight because i didnt want to turn it off and get disk read error ><.my nes still works o_o
Yeah sure it can survive that, but what if you trip over a cord and it falls from a height of 3 feet or less? Pwnage I'd bet, given Sony's track record.
I'll give this the benefit of the doubt because of my faith in the referring source, but I'm surprised any modern electronics can survive the humidity of a sauna.
Still, good to know mine will still work when some games finally come out for it! :)
Sorry, couldn't resist.
so hardware runs cooler when its in a cooler setting, get outta town!
Yeah well the Game Boy can survive a tank as evidenced by the Gulf War bunker Game Boy at the Nintendo World Center museum.
@ Pixel : sw takes time to devolp, the 360 didn't have that many hit titles by this time in its life, i think it had dead rising/lost planet and ping pong. and while i'll admit dead rising is pretty wicked cool thats still 2 games.
as far as the hardware tests go, i'm sure the 360 would probably fare better if it was a good design, but with an admitted design flaw its just not a fair comparison. When you have to wrap your console up in 3 towels to fix a design flaw something is wrong.
with that said i can't wait to start seeing some info on 65nm stuff and the failure rates, if its <5% i'll be getting one but this 100% eventually and realistically 66% is just stupid to spend $400 on.
Stories like this make me feel better about my purchase. The semi-frequent upgrades to the firmware bring some neat little surprises as well! I really want to hear more about this PVR functionality.
both my ps1 and ps2 had a replacement after a year (for free under warrentee) and both are still working fine. as are my xbox, gamecube, megadrive, dreamcast. in fact, sony consoles were the only ones i had to replace, but i got shiny new ones for free from the store there and then, so i didn't mind.
Is it weird that I find the "Dead Hooker" look kinda hot?
Impressive. But I'm still not shelling out that much cash for a game console just yet. Not until the two FFXIII games anyway.
Can someone point me to a look at the PS3 internals? I've seen the inside of the XBOX countless times, but I can't remember seeing the inside of the PS3. I want a peek.
What is the PS3? Jason Voorhees? Evidence: [kotaku.com]
I dropped mine (Accidently of course), i was taking it upstairs and i left the leads in which got caught on a stair gate (Bloody kids!), so i dropped the console where it tugged on the whole thing and it dropped down about 4 steps up, down the stairs to the hallway floor.
I was shitting myself! I thought it would be no good, the case had parted where all the buttons are (Eject disc, power button) and a little chip out of the front of the machine. I plugged it in asap, and see if it worked (I had to hold the console together while i pushed the power button) and it did! A few minutes later after studying the case i realised it just clicked together, so i just lined it up, pushed down and it's as good as new! Excluding the chipped corner... it's like when someone rips the logo off your mercedes or something...
The truth is; you get what you pay for. The PS3 has the lowest failure rate of all 3 consoles which surprised even me because i was speculating that the PS3 would have numerous problems like the PS2 during its initial launch but i was pleasantly surprised. Unlike the inexpensive Wii, it's been plaugued by numerous problems, albiet minor ones; except my Wii which overheated and melted my Zelda disc (not even joking). I knew several other people who had the exact same thing happen to them too.
They tried to test the XBOX 360. However, when they turned it on, they got the 3 RED LIGHTS on the RING OF LIGHT. *triple sigh*
@rcarydon:
best i could find

4 vids on deconstruction
Impressive.... although, like a tank, the regular public can't afford one.
Maybe they should've built a Chevy instead?
@Terinije: Oh, come'on. Everyone knows people prefer SUVs and big ass trucks over crappy compacts.
:)
Big deal, My original ps2 got hot and still worked for a good 8 months before it died. How bout they run it at that heat for say every day for i dont know 6 months.... If it passes that ill look twice and ask for a year test. Do it Mythbusters style, what will it take to do it. I would think repeated use at extreme temps would kill it over time, but definantly not right at the beginning
I've had about 40% of the ps3s that were bought and not sold on ebay come back to me for power failure.
Two things --
1) I work in a rental store, and a customer came in recently to let me know that their PS3, not 24 hours old, was fried by a rental copy of Project 8. When they called Sony, they were told it was a known issue with the game. So even though it's a system with an unbelievably better level of reliability than the 360, it's not quite infallible.
2) Nearly died laughing when I saw the pic you chose for this article. I used the same one for a zombie expose on my site not too long ago: [fjetsam.com]
@hvnlysoldr: Yea actually that gameboy survive an explosion, wich its twice as impressive...
Those that are surprised by this must be off their rockers. Sony makes great hardware, hands down. Rest assured when you make that purchase your getting quality equipment.
Good to finally hear some positive news about the PS3. Can't wait until the media stops talking down all the new consoles and just lets people make their own decisions.
Interesting.
I'd be more interested in seeing how well the new hardware Xbox 360s survive with the added heatsink and the newer, smaller chips.
All I care about is that hot ass zombie nurse....
I'd let her eat me.
@namegoeshere: PS1 and PS2 both had hardware issues. Sorry, Sony's good but NOT infallible.
I've always had a liking for how reliable Sony products seem to be. Nintendo is quite good as well. Must be a Japanese thing or something...
@jimmycanuck: Nah, nothing is completely unkillable. But the current count has both the Wii and the PS3 at under 1% failure. Considering Sony's track record with past consoles, it would seem they've cleaned up their act considerably.
It´s only natural that Kutaragi´s grill can stand some heat, but the real question is
Can you play your wii inside a live volcano?
I guess not, the TV would melt before you could find a power outlet. :D
(just a joke guys, please don´t ban me :P)
There is definitely a huge check in the hardware reliability column for the PS3. No one can argue with that. It will be nice to not have to worry about my PS3 dieing suddenly after I pick one up. Of course that is my biggest issue with the Xbox 360, not necessarily hardware failure but the worrying that comes with the potential of console death.
I just hope these new hardware improvements for the Xbox 360 (especially the extra heat sink) help bring the Xbox 360 failure rate to something acceptable. It is really disappointing to see these hardware problems prevent so many people from buying an Xbox 360 and playing the great games.
