Yesterday I posted what I thought to be the best game related cosplay at Comic Con, which were the awesome Lego Star Wars costumes. Later in the day my esteemed colleague Mr. Mc Whertor posted an image of these booth babes dressed as a pirate and a gorgon. While I agree that these are both fine costumes, I must respectfully disagree with his assessment of them being the best cosplay. These ladies, lovely as they may be, were being paid to appear at the event in costumes that while they may be nice, were provided to them by Sony Online and were made professionally. In my mind, true cosplay is created by dedicated fans with a lot of hard work and done for the love of of costuming and not for a paycheck. So bearing that in mind I still stick with my original vote and say that costumed booth babes may be nice to look at, but cosplay is for the fans. Feel free to argue this point ad nauseum in the comments.

Amen, Flynn.
flynn for the win!
its true because it rhymes.
I always thought good cosplay was about boobs and tight clothing...
But that's just me.
@Slashlen:
no, that's what strip clubs are for.
LEGO boobs ftw.
Just wondering, how does Medusa-wanabe move around? If she slithers, Mc Whertor ftw. If she walks, Flynn for the wynn
@Truepatriot: well, it doesnt :x
Agreed! Though, does that make what the pirate babe and gorgon are doing Coswork? Essentially yes, the title goes to the lego duo, just for sheer coolness and the fact that they really are just cosplaying for the sake of cosplaying.
The fatty behind Leia wins an epic win aswell.
True.. those lovely ladies aren't into costumed play, they're into costumed BUSINESS.
Well, all I know is if you don't have the "figure" for the character you want to cosplay as, don't cosplay as them.
Good looking girls in revealing outfits = Good Cosplay
Maybe it's just because I was never a huge fan of dressing up for halloween as a kid, but I've really never understood the desire some people have to go out there and gussy themselves up like a character from some game or movie. Call it a celebration of your hobby or a cry for attention, it baffles me. But hey, if it makes you happy, more power to you.
@lotkrota:
Boobs and tight clothing: Not just for strip clubs anymore!
If only they could combine the two...
@Krellie:
buzz kill =(
say it out loud its good enough =(
Precisely.
Cosplay != cospay.
Or something.
@Truepatriot: sorry :<
*comfort*
That guy behind Leia....Is he supposed to be Hank from the Venture Brothers?
The gorgon is a dog, and fails to win.
Anyone who gets paid to dress up as a pirate isn't really working. Cosplay bewbs ftw!
I'm siding with Flynnon this one, purely because it has given me an idea for my next Boxwars outing.
I agree with Flynn in principle, but I REALLY like the pretty pirate lady. Lego Star Wars wins the cosplay, she wins my heart... well, some part of me anyways.
That pirate costume is about as generic and boring as can be. The Gorgon chick is a double-bagger, so she's an epic fail too.
Androgynous, super-deformed cosplay isn't exactly hard to do. Especially those LEGO outfits. Its about 10x easier to make those costumes than it would be to make the actual characters behind those bastardized LEGO cookie cutter outfits.
McWhertor is right. I don't care who made the costumes. They're better than the Lego outfits by far.
If you want to, you could make those costumes yourself. It's just that most cosplayers half-ass their shit and aren't hot enough to pull it off.
Flynn's just bitter 'cause Michael gets all the action :P
Good cosplay is if they can make it look like it's supposed to...and actually look the part themselves.
I know there are some who take it a step further and act the part as well, which I suppose is the difference between just wearing the costume and actually "playing"
But the big thing is the homemade element. If you pay somebody else for the costume, then you're just doing the same thing as anybody who walks into the store and buys one.
@lotkrota:
Strip clubs are about clothing?
What makes impressive cosplay (aside from bewbs) is someone accurately mimicking a costumes designs which are sometimes physically impractical based on images and game footage. It's like the fashion design version of reverse engineering. The booth babe costumes were made by the people who designed them in the first place so it doesn't really have anything to do with cosplay in my book.
Best costumes = booth babes
Best cosplay = LEGO Star Wars
What Makes the cosplay is the person in the suit. The suit may be professionally made, it may be a shitty box with Gundam written on it. In the end, if the person can is in the spirit of the character, its all good.
Of course, a well done fan costume is always a plus.
A social retard with huge jubblies taped down behind a skimpy homemade tubetop that used to be a gym sock. THATs what makes for awesome cosplay.
I think the guy on the right of the Lego Star Wars photo, with the blue thing around his neck -- I think he wins.
"Best cosplay" is an oxymoron.
That said, those Lego Star Wars costume are 100% more original than any cosplay I've ever seen in my life.
Other famous cosplay characters... Ronald McDonald, Burger King, Grimace, Hamburgler, Chuck E. Cheese, the San Diego Chicken... So.. is there a difference between doing cosplay and being a mascot?
Essentially those girls were booth babes, not cosplayers. That's why the Lego Star Wars suits are the best.
I like the Gorgon chick the most... I don't know what it is about her but dammit she looks like she would be a freak in the sack.
@Hagglegaggle: I used to think the same way. I stopped dressing up for Halloween at a young age, and I always thought the idea of cosplay was pretty stupid. However, I went to the Anime Expo a month ago and saw all of the costumes. Again, I was put off by the idea. However, after spending a day at the event, I started to see the point. It's just another way for people to connect to one another, on various levels. Then there's always simply appreciating the amount of effort people have put into their costumes, including the really bad ones. I definitely had my mind changed.
Most of all, though, it comes down to having fun. It can be fun making something, and it's fun when your creation is appreciated by others.
What the fuck does this have to do with gaming?
Of course those two booth babes wouldn't have the best outfits. They're wearing way too much!
LeChunkBest got it right:
Best costumes = booth babes
Best cosplay = LEGO Star Wars
For the record though that Slaughterhouse model they had was horrible. There was a hoard of people staring at the amputee that they stuck a gun to her leg >_<;;
@Altima NEO:
Hey, now. Gundam Unit BOX was the coolest costume evar. That man is my hero. :(
Thank you Flynn. I totally agree with you. Cosplay is about immersing yourself with the character you love. Even if you dont have the "figure" as long as you love what your doing it doesn't matter.
I think the booth babes are great. But, in the true spirit of cosplay, I think Lego Star Wars wins. It doesn't hurt that they captured two parts of my childhood into one awesome homemade costume, but still. How many other people came as Lego figures and/or Star Wars characters?
true cosplay grinds tailoring skill
