Eidos has launched the official website for Tomb Raider Anniversary, feautring dekstop wallpapers, a screenshot gallery, and a brand new gameplay trailer. In case you don't feel like waiting for all of their flash to load, I'll go ahead and post it here.
While the title is supposed to be inspired by the original Tomb Raider game, I can't help but think Prince of Persia every time I watch this. Even the music fits. Not that that's neccisarily a bad thing, mind you. They could do a whole lot worse than creating a female Prince of Persia clone. Anything after the first sequel, for instance.

It hurts not to see this game on the 360.
What platforms will this game be on?
To answer my own question: PS2 and PSP.
Damn.
Everyone raves about Tomb Raider, I was never really a fan. I never liked the guns in the game. More exploring less shooting.
Tomb Raider Legend was surprisingly REALLY good (aside from the crap driving levels). Maybe this series still has some legs, some really fine long legs.
@PaulMorel: Thankfully it's on the PC as well
@jackal888: Thats why the first game was so much better than the others, it was focused more on the exploration of tombs (It featured more than one!) and puzzle solving, rather than gunplay (Well, except the last 3 levels which were a bit of a shooting grind)
@jackal888:
Neither was I, but Legend definitely got me hooked on it. For me it struck a good balance between action and puzzles.
I was so looking forward to this to get to know the Golden Age of Lara. I was going to moan about the lack of a Xbox360 version, but PC works just as well.
the originals were definitely more puzzle and exploration based, but, since tr3, it has gone downhill into more action gameplay. as much as i enjoyed the more recent prince of persia on pc, i cant say that i like that lara is now doing similar things. the inspiration from the classics went straight into the name..and character model.
when the first tomb raider came out i was thinking this is a 3D prince of persia. Then when prince of persia sands of time came out i was thinking, this is tomb raider with more acrobatic stunts and swordplay. it all comes around. hehe
Tomb Raider was one of the all time Greatest Adventure Games of all time? I mean it was good.. gah. I hate marketing.
Why isn't this coming out for Xbox 360 or PS3? Seems silly just to put it out for PS2 and PSP. Tomb Raider Legend was quite fun, but the PSP version's controls left quite a bit to be desired - hopefully they can fix the controls this time around (assuming this is based on the engine from Legend).
Again, seems quite foolish not to make it for at least 360.
Michael, did you play Tomb Raider Legend? If you had, you would have realized that Anniversary isn't when they decided to turn the game into a PoP Sands of Time clone. It was in Legend that they did that! There's a fair amount of Tomb Raider "purists" that ripped on the game for that ("This isn't real Tomb Raider! Where's our grid based movement!?"), but I for one really, really enjoyed it and I played every other TR game before it (except Angel of Darkness which was just far too bad to purchase).
Is there ANYONE that seriously complained Tomb Raider Legend got rid of the "grid based movement"? ANYONE?!!?
Graphics don't seem to reach the God of Wars 1 level
How can they not bring this game to both PS3 and Xbox 360?
I expect an announcement really soon!
PC version is OK but I'd rather play on my 360. It would be crazy not to bring it over to the 360 since it uses the legend engine.
Oh and for all those calling it a PoP rip off, you have to understand that the original Tomb Raider was essentially taking the original 2D Prince of Persia and recreating it in 3D! It used the same grid based jump system, and it felt just like PoP in a 3rd dimension.
And if you want to be anal Flashback and Another World both stole (or were inspired by) PoP 2D too!
The original PoP was VERY influential!
Honestly I think there should be more PoP clones. The platforming in all three games was just brilliant, and we need more of that. It's just that the particular style is so distinctive people are probably scared of seeming like a PoP clone if they copy it in the slightest.
But what's with all the PoP 3 hate? I'll admit that I only played through PoP 2 for the platforming, and the combat was atrocious, but combat was annoying in PoP one, and at least they were trying to fix that. I think the speed kills in PoP 3 were an amazing idea. I mean, rewarding good platforming with fun and cool looking kills is what every platformer needs. Not to mention the story was the most original, even if some of the lines were too corny.
I would like to see God of War's combat put over Prince of Persia's platforming. Talk about gaming heaven.
So yeah, disregard the PoP hate comment. I just realized he meant that Tomb Raider sucked after the first sequel.
Maybe they are not bringing it to next gen because they are working on a sequel to Legend.

I guess it's because ps2 has a 100mil install base. Even if 2% of the people buy it, it's better than all of the ps3 owners to buy it.
Looking nice. Never was a fan of the series before Legends, outside of the great soundtracks.
Awesome, it even appears to have the extra levels from Tomb Raider Gold. I just hope they make the save system a little less punishing than it was on the original Playstation. Just a couple of weeks ago I thought I'd go through the first for nostalgia's sake, and nearly came to the point of gnawing on the disc like a dog.
Looks great, I cannot wait for this one.
"This is a game you've played before."
HA! I get it!
@Futurebiblehero: A recent article confirmed that the save system is the checkpoint one from Legend, and considering how regular that was losing much progress probably won't be an issue.
As far as I know there are no plans to use TR Gold levels in it (unless they are keeping it secret), but since it's touted as a "re-imagining" it wouldn't be surprising if they took some inspiration from it for certain areas.
The Legend demo almost got me playing TR again. I had always wanted to try TR1 since it's fairly well regarded, so it's (presumably) great that they have done this 'sequel'. I just wish they could get the tech right to make her skin look like, well, skin... I'm going to be playing this with my pants around my ankles anyway, might as well not have to squint and pretend.
The original Tomb Raider is one of my all time favourite games and I'm excited by this. It looks good and if it plays like Legend, then I'll be hooked again. I'm all for puzzles and exploration. Combat should be a fallback method in my opinion. And for bears. Those things are nasty!
I wonder if they have inculded the Unfinished Business expansion levels into Anniversary? I hope so, I guess the context needs to fit. :)
