Insomniac Games showed off a bit more of Ratchet and Clank Future this week, walking the press through a chunk of a level to show off some new weapons like the pyro blaster and the combuster. They also showed off new combat devices, RPG-like items that can be used throughout the game. My favorite? The Grooveatron, which forces the bad guys to do some bad disco while you mop them up.
The video also shows part of an end level fight. This game looks like a must have for me.

I hope we can upload our own music onto the Grooveatron. The default Saturday Night Fever (I think) song will get pretty damn annoying (moreso than it already is).
Otherwise, consider the game bought.
wow, I never played any of the previous Ratchet and Clank titles...maybe I should?
I'm a pretty big fan of this series and this is looking like the best one of all. I'm giving Insomniac Games extra slack after Resistance: Fall of Man -- being that I thought it was an excellent game (am I the only one that noticed the dead bodies didn't disappear like every other game created in history?). The new video posted way after Crecente's bedtime (showing his dedication) is making me feel like one of Pavlov's dogs -- if those dogs were gamers. This title is becoming my most desired of 2007 and that's saying something, as I started growing tired of platformers around a decade ago.
hmmmm i never really saw what people liked in this game before, but this looks pretty interesting.
i would buy it if i could justify buying a ps3 first
Damn you youtube quality videos!
I am finally playing through the original Ratchet games in anticipation of this, it looks awesome!
That looked really entertaining. I loved R&C on the PS2, so it makes me a bit sad that I won't be playing this game for a long while. That is, unless there's a price drop *crosses fingers.*
I like Ratchet & Clank, but, uh....
...it seems like it's pretty much the same game as the other three, but prettier and with a boss battle on a rail.
Come on, Insomniac! Show us something really new!
@Atheist Jew:
You know I was in the same situation as you, I just bought the first ratchet & clank game yesterday. Best buy of the week :).
I don't know what's so great about this game, still don't know... It just seems like shooting shooting shooting and some platforming at the same time...
Is that really all there is or is there something more to it I just can't see?
@Sloopydrew:
yeah but the play for 5-15 mins than have a picture cutscene, load screen, another cutscene really annoyed me. other than that rfom is fun. have yet to finish it, half way thru. all the loading just makes me so angry. i swear one level i walked 50 feet killed 2 guys and bam a cutscene load screen crap.
and this game looks good not sure if i will get it yet (which mean i will likley get it as long as the wife lets me lol)
@Frexy Q.:
It's an excellent platformer/shooter. You just probably have to play it, to get the "feel". It's not changing the wheel, just being a good game.
Though I hate how many people say the visuals are amazing, yet Kameo, a launch Xbox 360 title looks the same, if not better.
Didn't the South Park game for N64 do this like 8years ago?
@Karttikeya: Exactly the same thing I thought, this game looks good but I think Kameo actually looked better. And that was a launch game for crying out loud.
They better give Toejam & Earl some credit for the dance attack.
If only someone could continue that series where Panic on Funkatron left off and skip the cheesy modern hip hop referencing.
TJ&E is all about the ooooooold skool hi hop references and flat out funk!
Hold on there young thundercats, Kameo looked great from a technical standpoint but Rare's characters designs are still ass and it couldn't hold framerate. I'd still give the nod to Rachet and Clank for great visuals AND great character designs with a smooth fraterate (as far as we can see).
I enjoy R&C but seeing as it's on the PS3 (which is too expensive for me) I'll have to pass. :(
looks sick
i love r&c
Rachet & Clank & LittleBigPlanet = Only reason to get a PS3. :D
sadly the framerate of this poor uploaded or leaked video is slower then the actual game..
This is gona be a AMAZING ps3 title..
I've never played the R&C games. After seeing this footage, I still don't think I want to. They just look generic. Maybe its the characters. Maybe its the universe in front of me. I just have nothing to attach my interest to. Sure, it looks nice, smooth, and the gameplay appears competant, but...I don't know. It's not doing it for me.
That looks fantastic, the Groovitron made me laugh twice. :)
Levels also look more interessting than RC3, the only one I've played. Mind you I hear the first 2 were better.
@Zim:
I've got both systems, so no bias here, and for me Kameo isn't even close to the same league as R & C. Kameo just has that super generic Western made platformer feel to me. Now R & C may be a western made platformer, but to me, those games blew away Super Mario Sunshine. In, short I'm all over this.
wow....graphics are really good.
I actually preferred "Metal Arms:Glitch in the System" to R&C, but to each their own. Seriously, "Glitchy" was one of the most unappreciated games on the Xbox, and that was a shame. Briliant game, with adult humor and mindless fun. One of the few platformers that I ever cared for. I would love to see a new Metal Arms for the 360, but that is not likely to ever happen. Pity.
@bornonce:
My nominee for under appreciated X-Box game has to be "Voodoo Vince."
A game where your goal is to hurt yourself in weird and unexpected ways = a good time for me.
Plus, he was kind of the precursor to LittleBigPlanet's "Sackman."
@drack48: I've got both systems, therefore I'm not bias. Suuuure. That's what they all say. Some may beg to differ with your argument claiming that all R&C simply is, is a mixture of Crash and Jak & Daxter.
@Frexy Q.:
"It just seems like shooting shooting shooting and some platforming at the same time"
So how is that any different from Mario...? Replace "shooting shooting shooting" with "stomping stomping stomping" and you have pretty much the same kind of game.
Sold! This game looks amazing, and the series has always been a blast.
Grooveatron is right out of Toejam and Earl.
I'm all for a new Ratchet and Clank game, despite my ill will towards the PS3. Thing is, why call it Ratchet and Clank Future? Why not just call it Ratchet and Clank 4?
Loving the new weaponry. As usual, Insomniac makes a great arsenal of toys for my favorite Lombax.
Game looks fun, but yikes... a cell phone video?

Also, Groovetron looks cool, but also straight from a Rayman Raving Rabbids powerup. Oh well, inspiration from everywhere, right?

Hmmm....looks good. Looks like a ton of fun. I'm getting convinced that I need a third current gen system...
@lefty420: that's a pretty ridic. statement i mean i have resistence and i didn't have any problems with load times. Yes there are cut scenes but there not loading times. The levels were just the right length i felt...i dono but i didn't have any problems with the game.
Man, I guess I am joining everyone else who is going to by the old Ratchet and Clank games over the summer. I knew the PS3 was gonna pick things up this Fall, but watching all these different conference videos has absolutely blown me away.
I think R&C 2 may have been the apex... maybe R&C 3 since it had a great online mode as well. I actually never played the original either.

I look forward to this Rachet and Clank game they have always been a blast. I laugh a little bit everyone says the game isnt new and they don't want it. I agree I like those gems of games that are totally new but Rachet and Clank is still sound fun and still has room to grow. Everyone claims they want new games then excellent titles like Beyond Good and Evil just dont sell cause no one has heard of them.
looks ok. would like this to be multiplayer co-op and online battles tho...
@AfHb21:
how so man?
here is how the game goes. uplay 5-15 mins on avg, some levels are alot longer yes specially at the end when you have a big fight, but usualy you play for 5-15 mins, than there is just a picture with a women telling more to the story, than it goes to a laoding screen and that takes well over 30 seconds to load, than once you hit start to start the next level you have another cutscene.
thats how level to level goes in rfom. it may not bother you personally but to me specially with all this power cutscenes should be limited. its not about if you think level length feels right. theres times in rfom where it just blows me away than i get the loading cutscene crap.
maybe its cause some of the shooters i am use to playing the cutscenes are limited and levels are alot longer.
vegas- you get a cutscenes but its only one and very little evidence of loading, and the cutscene is all from in game and usually when you flying in the helicopter so its more immersive
Graw and graw 2- very similar to vegas. every cutscene includes you more into the game. and levels are long with multiple objectives through out.
cod2 and cod3 are a lil worse but better than rfom in this aspect. plus as in graw and rainbow six you ahve multiple objectives and when you finish those they throw more at you making the elvels twice or 3 times longer the a normal rfom cutscene
gears of war - cutscene is skippable, loading is on the fly. levels some time not as long as graw or rainbbow six but longer than rfom
i like to play. i don't lie to have to keep stopping. imagine if your playign rainbow six and your on the roof to dantes inferno and once you fight your way inside you have a cutscene load screen. than you reach groud level and have another cut scene load screen crap. it would kil the game. as the cutscenes kill rfom to me.
like the time i was fighting and reached the old church in rfom. i had been playing maybe 5 mins from the last level and instead of just going inside the church it had to have a cutscene and load screen. i fight the guys in the church and make my way out side took all of 10 mins walk 50 feet and bam another cut screen load screen cut screen sequence. and yes the middle is a load cause it says Loading next level my friend.
hope this helps. other than rumble its my biggest complaint with rfom. the textures could use some work but gameplay>graphics and like i said its fun but the loading cut scenes kill me
imho. hope r&c have less load screens and cutscenes than rfom.
I can not wait for this game. Each clip I see makes me want it more and more. This series minus Ratchet: Deadlock has been just pure fun.
Looks just like the previous R&C games. Which is good! Groove-a-tron will get boring fast though I reckon.
Once again... I hate furry animal platformer games... I don't like a single game in the R&C series or Jak and Daxter or Crash Bandicoot...
But, hey, if it sells PS3s and gets more games coming to my system, I'm all for it.
Actually, bob, it sounds like you're a bit off. You don't hate the games. You hate the genre, not that there's anything wrong with that. :)
For my part, I don't care as long as the games are done well, and the R&C games have always been done well. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the R&C games have the best sci-fi weapons of any game, period (especially Deadlocked). I'm not saying they're all super original. You still have the future skinned sniper rifle, pistols, shotgun, rocket launcher, mine launcher, etc. But they have great graphics and sound and are fun to use.
If Deadlocked had just had a quicker system for swapping mods on the fly, it would have been a gun lover's wet dream.
I'd love to pick up R&C Future. Maybe when the PS3 is half its current price. :P It really stinks that we gamers have become hostages in Microsoft and Sony's battle for the living room.
well.. man.. ratchet is pretty heavily story driven, and all the cut scenes are good for showing you the characters personalities, and other such things.
anyways, the best thing about rachet games is the awesome weapons (and the great control)
and those weapons look AMAZING.. with the ps3 theres stuff you can do that the ps2 versions never even DREAMED of doing.
so that alone has me quite excited for this game. definetly.
