When I was at TGS, the Metal Gear Solid 4 demo was all the rage. Huge lines, long waits. I attended the demo with Ash and as predicted I was terrible and it seemed like it was over before it even began. The other problem for me was that it was all in Japanese so not only did I suck at it, but I sucked at it and had no clue as to what was going on.
Although E for All didn't offer a whole lot in the way of games, it did have the MGS4 demo and this time in English. And while I saved myself the embarrassment of stinking it up in two languages I did notice that despite the sparse crowds, the MGS line was always rather lengthy. The fine folks at GameTrailers were good enough to get footage from the English demo and post it all for you to check out since, according to Ryan Payton, you won't be seeing this as a demo on PSN. The video has been split up into four easily digestible parts with the first one appearing above and the remaining three waiting for you after the jump

Holy hell, that's a lot of vids.
But I still don't get it: if they have this demo all done, why do they refuse to let us try it?
so how long until somebody posts that it doesn't look good?
@Al2x:
you had your chance... should have gone to e4all...
but other than that they have explained several times they don't want it out for download due to it being in a beta'ish stage and not representing the final product.
@kingclip: I will. It dosn't look that good. Perhaps I am a jaded PC gamer but the graphics look good I don't think they are as amazing as people are claming they are. Course I lost intrest in MGS after Sons of Liberty came out and not because of Ryden. I don't like how its 5 mins of game play then watch 10 min cut scene. Really the MGS guys need to just go ahead and stop making games and just make a movie since its clear thats what they really want to do.
So, I guess everyone is a Yankee?
From now on I will no longer pay attention to any MGS4 articles on any website.
Watching these videos hurt to damn much, this shit is torture. You hear that Kotaku you are tortuing us by showing us something we can't have (at least for the moment).
So for my personal well being the next thing I read about MGS4 will be about the release of the demo and the release date of the game.
I agree. Out of all that was at E for All, there were only lines for 3 things: MGS4, SSBB and Rock Band. And while I totally sucked at MGS4 and only had 15 minutes of play time, it looked amazing.
wow this looks great.Really looking forward to it.
I love how in the last video there are still Japanese subtitles... Does that mean they are not far into the translation process?
Did anyone else hear the guy scream "You're the man now dog" during the 4th vid?
Thats AWESOME I cant wait to get my hands on it
Yeah, the graphics look great, but I can see this game still reeks of everything that made me stop finishing this series after 1 (Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........); this game looks like its going to be a snoozefest. Sorry Kojima, but Splinter Cell has taken your thrown. Just from what I've heard, this stories going to be too convoluted to care about. I'm sure long time MGS fans will love it, I just don't see it being a system seller, as most MGS fans probably own one already having expected this game to be out holiday season.
I'm glad they finally matched up the mouths with the words coming out of them, much like Capcom began to do a few years ago. I always take note of that when watching these trailers on video games. Besides that, this game looks like it will be the SOLE reason I buy a PS3. Nothing else looks that good.
This and LBP are the reasons I bought a PS3. Hope MGS4 doesn't let me down like the past two MG games did :(
Are we really going to have to spend the entire game staring at Snake's asscrack? T_T
@Toasticus: YES!
Its better than Raiden`s though.
@usfslacker: Splinter Cell is and always has been an ass poormans MGS. Its boring and I own most of the SC games.
In the third video, about a bit past the half way mark, did one of the guards say:
"Your the man now dog" ?!!?
Oh this game will be worth a ps3 purchase on its own.
@Toasticus:
Thank you! Why do they have to make it so obvious? I'm not I like the new camera view -- doesn't have the same feel as the other MGS games. This gameplay video really didn't impress me much.
@Witzbold:
by what criteria do you judge snake's asscrack better than raiden's ? ;D
@usfslacker: "Splinter Cell has taken your thrown"
terrible spelling confirmed.
@Toasticus:
Wow, I didn't know what you were talking about, had to watch it again. His ass sticks out like a sore thumb. Kojima revealing something maybe?
@Witzbold:
Not to say you're not correct, but if 10 more minutes of this game is that boring I'd have to take speed to watch the videos. Demos are supposed to make someone (that didn't buy a $600 system a year early just to play the game) want to play the game.
@jfx316: Awh give him a break...He's a USF Slacker!
@usfslacker: A lot of people thought that everyone who wanted Halo 3 already bought a 360 for it.
Didn't stop 360 sales from surging though.
@Witzbold: Poor mans MGS? I fail to see how. MGS is incredibly unrealistic while Splinter Cell hangs more in the real world. Gameplay wise I have always prefered Splinter Cell. MGS is just..well it plays almost like an arcade game and since I could never get into the convoluted story and I dont find the gameplay anything special I havent been able to get into this series. I owned MGS on PS1 and MGS 2 on PS2. I played 3 and couldnt stand it and then I bought MGS2 on Xbox and again coudlnt figure out what was so good that people drool over it.
@jfx316:
Damned windows has failed me again, insert "throne" to satiate grammar whores. Also, if that qualifies as terrible, you must be new here on t3H 1nt4rn3tz!!!
@Peryite:
MGS may be an acclaimed series, but it has/will NEVER have close to the system selling power that Halo has. The XBOX 360 sales surged because of the game's huge casual base (the ones that buy consoles for one game like Halo). This game cannot possibly have that large of a casual appeal.
mgs4 has me worried with some of the sillyness.theres a new meter that goes down affects your stamina or something and the only way to bring it back is to read a bikini magazine.sure that sounds fun for 1 try like gtas hooker sex but to make it an essantial part of the game is just weird.
listen to the hotspot i dont remember which episode but it was after tgs and they talk about the 2 new meters.
So have y'all noticed the names of the area? The name was MIDDLE EAST:something-or-other. Now, I could be wrong, but this seems like a pretty good indication that the game will take place in other locales. Otherwise, why would they put Middle East before the area name (like it's the name of the larger region of gameplay, similar to the Struts in MGS2 or the 3-to-4 area regions in MGS3)?
Oh, and me likey.
7.9 game confirmed.
Oh wait, this is a PS3 game, so there is an automatic .5 deduction from the score.
7.4 game confirmed.
@usfslacker: "Wow, I didn't know what you were talking about, had to watch it again. His ass sticks out like a sore thumb. Kojima revealing something maybe?"
It's pretty clear where Kojima's sexual orientation lies. Remember the "grabbing the statue member" animation from an earlier video? Or how about the "grab and takedown" animations, where it is clearly designed to look as though Snake is humping the fallen soldier.
It's a homoerotic feast of a game :)
@usfslacker: splinter cell has taken MGS' throne?
Hardly. I think people started losing interest in SC after Chaos Theory.
@taftsearlobe23: 5 minutes of gameplay followed by a 10 minute cutscene? I think you're exaggerating, but I still disagree. Maybe if you play run-and-gun through each area, you would, but if you get really picky and involved in sneaking around it's a lot more gameplay before each cutscene. Additionally your comment about the graphical quality doesn't hold much water; you have to remember you're watching a scaled-down version of the actual video, crammed onto a pretty tiny "screen."

This game definitely looks solid (pardon the pun), although it is kind of funny how Konami has had to go back on its word of getting it out in 07 (it was in one of the first trailers, remember?).
I'm happy to see both the Drum AND the Cardboard Box are in the game! I thought they'd ditched one in favor of the other.
I like all the tiny upgrades they did when you compare this to the presentation Kojima gave. The threat ring is a little thicker, so you can see it better; we get to hear some of the music Gregson-Williams has assembled for the game; what I liked the most (and please no complaining about it not being one huge map) is that it seems like the game will tell you what zone you're heading towards before getting there.
@Spiffyness: Can we stop the stupid MGS/SC debate? The games are VERY different, and they're both very good. Splinter Cell strives to be hyper-realistic, slow-paced (in a good, tension-building way), and light on story. Metal Gear is arcade-like, fast-paced (for a stealth game, anyway), and very story-heavy.
In other words, one is Western and the other is Japanese. Really, that should separate them enough by itself. Personally, I like Metal Gear better, but that doesn't mean SC isn't really fun anyway.
@libregkd: funny. wait not.
No this game looks legit. It already has a few features which make me go WOW, and the AI looks superb.
WTF is with the pulling barrels and boxes to hide in out of thin air?
@not_tom_brokaw:
"splinter cell has taken MGS' throne? Hardly. I think people started losing interest in SC after Chaos Theory."
No one I know, save for one, made it all the way through MGS3.
@Amazing_Steve: It's Hideo Kojima. You just sort of nod your head, smile, and go with the flow.
I am completely not getting why this is so hyped. I could never get into MGS 2/3 (horrid controls and 3rd person) and this looks like more of the same.
I thought it was funny when the guy said something along the lines of "here, you might want to have this" and then proceeded to drop the thing on the ground rather than handing it to snake.
And I wonder where he fits the guns, rocket launchers, boxes and drums in his skin-tight suit.
@Taz: I played the first one was great, thats it...
Is it just me or snake runs like weird...
The longer the wait the more boring the game hype gets. I don't realy care about MGS4 never got into it and also its only out for the ps3. well its a good job splinter cell is a exculsive to microsoft only out for the xbox360 and pc stealth wars will be begin.
@usfslacker: Splinter cell taking mgs thrown clearly your delusional bro check the reviews of mgs games compared to Sc games. Any gamer will tell you MGS is one of the best stealth games ever made SC dont even come close to mgs an the gameplay is so pc there aint even any blood. I have all the SC games an finished em all an i do enjoy the series but it only serves as a tied me over till a MGS game comes out.
As for the demo it looks AMAZING!!! an will be a definate system seller that an ff *especially ff japs are crazy for that lol* but for the first time owning a ps3 i can say im truly pissed off.. no psn demo...that blows man.
Early 2008!!! PS3 owners will be really happy.. Watching the demo of MGS4 really amazes me and the game play is just awesome.
I played SC not great.
@parad0x360: @Witzbold: Gotta go with Paradox on this one Witz. Although I love MGS, Splinter Cell does alot of things "better", and not 1 game every 3-5 years too!
You have "better" stealth, in that there is no crazy percent camo meter, and the sneaking and lock picking etc is just much more intense and nerve racking. No hiding in boxes/barrels.
You have "better" realism with the weapons. He dosn't carry around 30 guns, or a ton of rations, just a set of tools and the rest is up to you.
Story isn't some weird commentary on our genes and life and inherited traits. It actually makes sense, and actually has some sort of throw back to current events.
And come no, Sam Fisher is just a bad ass mofo (although snake is too, heh).
Also multiplayer (in Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory) are brilliant and so far the MP in MGS not only puts me off with the whole "separate game" crap, but it just looks to be your basic X vs X combat, using the MGS engine, which imo, isn't very good for shooting (its perfect for the type of game MGS is, but dunno about adversarial combat)
Don't get me wrong however. I love MGS, and its the game I am buying a PS3 for more then anything else....
@kingclip:
It looks good!
Unfortunately, the barrels in your inventory thing is plain stupid.
It looks dumb.
Why bother creating a realistic environment only to ruin it with a ridiculous design decision like that.
Plus the AI looks erratic at this point.
Graphics look great. Sound designed sounds promising.
Too bad about magic barrels killing the atmosphere.
@slade:
FYI:
Calling people japs makes you look like an asshole.
Actually it shows people that you are an asshole.
Grow up.
So Ryan Payton says there isn't going to be a PSN demo of MGS4. That's cool. What I'm guessing they'll do is include a demo of MGS4 as an incentive for preordering the game. Just because they say "no PSN demo" doesn't mean there won't be a bluray demo.
@Spiffyness:
thank you. like everytime you see a killzone story, halo and halflife are there within minutes and everybodys thrashing eachothers games after that.
personaly ive played only metal gear solid on the cube which I loved. also ive played most of the splintercells which I loved.
omg, could it be that someone truly enjoys both ?!?
*universe collapses.
I still have my fingers crossed for Konami to come out and change their minds about the a demo release. Perhaps by Christmas time?
@usfslacker: "No one I know, save for one, made it all the way through MGS3."
Everyone I know completed MGS3.
See how points like these have no merit in the conversation at hand?
I see way too many whiny little kids complaining about MGS4 in the smallest most idiotic ways -__-
This is hand's down the best looking PS3 iv seen. Kojima's folks and Insomniac need to give other devs lessons on how to get off their asses and code for teh PS3.
Righty, seems to be what expected. Few things that caught my eye, and ear. In the last clip the MGS classic sound effects are really out of place and the first clips gave an impression that the areas are rather large and optional routes might actually exist this time. Some of the classic gameplay features stick out pretty badly in such a modern game, like the items popping out of bodies when dropped, the old sound effects, etc. But, really looking forward to this. Always in for some sneaking, be it Thief, MGS, or even... well, sometimes even Spliter Cell passes.
Why haven't they released a MGS4 Demo yet? If they're worried about bugs, they can simply brand it as a beta instead. The graphics are alright, but at best they're no better than Gears of War, although I don't think it'll matter because MGS4 should be awesome. Also, I love how many people can't use the correct form of throne.
@slade: Lets take a look at those reviews shall we?
Splinter Cell: 93
Splinter Cell Pandora Tommorow: 93
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: 94
Splinter Cell Double Agent: 89
Time Span: Last 5 years
Metal Gear Solid: 94
Metal Gear Solid 2: 96
Metal Gear Solid 3: 94
Time Span: 10 years
So yeah, MGS has better reviews, but not by a long shot as you say. Not only that, but MGS has had years to "cook" so to speak, and I doubt MGS 1 would stand up today as well as it did back then, take the 85% that Twin Snakes got as proof of that.
As for your point that the game must suck because it has no blood, wow, thats just bloody sad. How that makes a game better for anyone is just beyond me.
Reviews taken from Metacritic.com
@usfslacker: I beat MGS3, and almost everyone I know who owned a PS3 did too. Its a great game... Just had a broken camera in the first release..
Must have for me. It's great to see that their are different ways that you can go through that one part of the game. I'll probably replay it more than I did Snake Eater, and I played that a lot.
@
