Kotaku Unlocks The Bonus Round, Part I

Hours prior to E3, I, Ron Workman from Destructoid, and Chris Grant from Joystiq sat down to chitchat with Geoff Keighley about... our jobs. This first part of the Bonus Round focuses on a number of blogger-centric topics, but eventually devolves into a bloody fistfight between me, Grant and Workman. Unfortunately, Ron is fatally wounded two thirds of the way in when Chris crushes his skull with one of the studio chairs following Workman's flippant remark about blockquoting. A tragic loss, but it makes for great internet television.

    Drunk uncles ftw

  • The guy from Joystiq looked so miserable, never been to there blog before, I might check it out. And the guy from Destructoid said something about saying thins that aren't true is funny, what an asshole. Kotaku is the best and most accurate.

  • Heh. Kotaku FTW

  • notice how Mike is the most caually dress one there.

  • nt to mention the bed-head hair and scraggly beard

  • Mike is deffinately the coolest looking guy there. Nice t-shirt too.

I used to be a Joystiq regular. The thing that pushed me over the top was an advertising set they had that looked like a positive review for a game, but was actually just an advertisement. I absolutely refuse to support deceptive marketing, so I made the switch to Kotaku. At first I was frustrated that I'd have to put up with getting news from a different site, but I quickly realized that the Kotaku readership's reading comprehension and maturity level is significantly higher. Weeding out the blatant idiots makes a big difference.

Kotaku editorials are actually worth reading, too. It's not like you report on how totally gay your roommate thinks the Wii is. (Joystiq had one such article.)

  • @Toasticus:
LOL, That article sounds hilarious for all the wrong reasons. Link maybe?

  • Image of Maldron Maldron at 05:15 PM on 07/22/07 *

I was promised violence that I wasn't delivered. Still, it's an interesting topic to follow.

  • @Frenzy54: What can I say? I work from home.

@Toasticus: Glad to have you on "our side."

  • I want that shirt.

  • I read all 3 on a regular basis, and like them all for different reasons. Kotaku for the relevance and comprehension, Destructoid for the culture and humor, and Joystiq...well, maybe I just read the two after all. :D

  • @McWhertor:
That is a seriously awesome shirt. Where did you get it? Know anywhere I can order it from?

  • @McWhertor

I couldn't catch all of what your shirt said. Little help?

p.s. I would like to say that I for one read and enjoy all three of these fine blogging establishments.

  • @Faint: Sorry! I'm not really allowed to talk about that shirt just yet.

  • A not so subtle confirmation of a new Kotaku flavor shirt? kthx. Whenever you CAN talk about that shirt I'll be buying it.

  • Can't be a Kotaku shirt, not enough pink and green in it.

  • Um, hey guys, whats a "Destructiod"?

  • Mike's hair = shiny (in a good way).

  • @jive238: I think it is what they call a dingle berry that got stuck to a hemroid.

Actually it is not a bad site for a giggle but Kotaku is much better for information purposes and the community itself.

  • I'm also one of those that started at joystiq and left (quite some time ago now) for my new love, Kotaku. The girlfriend gets jealous but I said she should be happy to be on the side.

Destructoid was something that was incredibly awesome for sometime with its overly casual nature of the journalism. However, this was also its downfall for me when some of the bloggers started adding a little too much personal opinion and adding useless posts. Also, contrary to what workman said, posting false news is not fun.

  • Love the shirt.

  • haha.. GASP! No Patcher? Haha, I guess he doesn't apply to this episode's topic :)

Interesting episode :O The next part sounds more exciting :)

  • You lied, McWhertor! You lied about the bloody fistfight in all your messy haired glory!

I wanted to see Keighley fall! Fall I say!

  • This article is a house of lies. =(

I frequent both Kotaku and Joystiq, but I prefer the former. One of the reasons is that there is a closer bond here with the writers; the notes Crecente and Ashcraft send to one another give a touch of personal insight into their lives that turns them into actual people, not just a byline attached to an article. The references everyone makes to one another in the posts also adds more humanity.

As a writer, I love those who show their personalities through their words, and as such, I love the laid-back and comical tone adopted by practically all of Kotaku (this post alone contains that humor). The layout of the site is also more appealing: Joystiq is cluttered with links to a bunch of stuff I don't particularly care for.

And, of course, Crecente's hair and piratical nature are a huge draw.

  • I like Kotaku when I'm bored and I get home and have nothing to do coz there'll be like 100 posts in a day, but if I'm busy, sometimes I'll just 'mark all as read' and read the most important stuff from somewhere else like 4cr or the BGB. Destructoid is like the Daily Show to Kotaku's CNN. (Joystiq are local news with signing for the hard of hearing...)

  • @Gamemaster: You watched, didn't you? :)

  • I like Geoff :)

  • @scndmg:

Have to agree, for a bunch of guys that run a gaming blog, you all scrub up very well. If any of you are considering a career change, you could probably form a boy band...

  • I like the Bonus Round episodes. Props to Geoff Keighley, who is a good interviewer.

I remember the time when Kotaku used to receive about at most 10 comments per post...I used to be a Joystiq reader at that time but now I've moved to Kotaku mainly (I can't stand Destructoid's hideous design). I've noticed that Joystiq's readership has decreased while Kotaku's has increased.

Btw, did you guys get to discuss the whiny comments? Both Kotaku and Joystiq seem to have a problem with whiny gamers.

Kotaku has this thing where it does make you feel a bit more involved. From the live/video blogging to, the superb comment section, to this whole 'unofficial unpaid intern' thingie.

Sadly that never looks good on the resume :P

  • @Huginn: Maybe... Just maybe if there were rewards...

    :)

  • kotaku for the update to date news, destructoid for the humor. joystiq for...um

  • Mike kind of stole the show there.

I don't read the other sites, don't seem like my kind of thing. Kotaku keeps up to the minute on more news than most people can handle. Not to mention the site is kept clean and neat with few ads. What else could you need?

  • I like them all because sometimes there is different content on each blog site. Although, Some of the stories are the same or similar but with a different take or commentary.

I prefer Kotaku because they got me started/addicted on game blogs and other blogs in general.

  • Each site reports to their respective audiences:
    - Kotaku the 20/30-something professionals and up-and-coming professionals who want news first but enjoy the commentary/editorials
    - Joystiq the younger crowd (teens to early twenties)
    - Destructoid the... well... it's kinda all over the place, with readers who first want the funny, but also want some level of news as well

But yeah, Kotaku and McWhertor FTW!

  • Ive been to the others on occasion - but it really didn't interest me. I am very much a news reader. I guess Kotaku just kinda fits me.

Though by the previous comments, sounds like destructoid is the only other worthy contender in the list =p

  • Def. Kotaku ftw. I do enjoy bite-size portions of news interspersed with cake photos. Everyone's commenting on the shirt, which is fabu, but no one has ripped on the three faded black jeans yet. Are they part of the 'edgy journalist' outfit?

  • @Toasticus: Yeah, I'm with you. Some of the commentors on joystiq are really immature, and not nearly as witty as the ones on Kotaku tend to be. This is definitely my preferred site for gaming news.

  • everyone knows hair is power, the more u have the better.... and that beard is mint

  • Yea same as quite a few people here definetly Kotaku.
I still read joystiq sometimes but it has done some incredibly annoying things, most of the writers have 0 personality (I can only think of Ludwig whereas I think I know most from kotaku) and commentators generally seem more immature.

Destructoid I read 3 stories from it and hated it. Maybe they were just bad stories however I remember them being incredibly under researched and seemed just like fanbait. That was when Kotaku or joystiq first mentioned them I think and after reading those 3 I never went back. Maybe it's got better but it was just so awful.

I guess Kotaku strikes a nice balance between Joystiqs news only and Destructoids completly useless but funny style.

  • Yo, Mike, I got the same shoes as you! Keep that shit rocking! Let me ask you something... do people ever ask you where your shoe laces are, cause they do that to me a lot ;D.

  • Joystiq reports the news AND the jokes in such a monotone and mundane style, the whole site reeks of boredom.
Destructoid is like the blabbering drunk idiot with all the lame jokes. 'Lawl, cock.'
    Kotaku is the awesomes.

  • I go to Kotaku and Joystiq. I generally avoid Destructoid, though.

  • Additionally, someone should tell the people at bonus round that the word is blogosphere, not blogisphere.

  • Kotaku IS awesome, but there is something fascinating and funny about blabbering drunk idiots! Kotaku & Destructoid all the way! (Especially now that Dtoid has Eliza and Florian too...)

  • Image of huginn huginn at 10:19 PM on 07/22/07 *

    @Gamemaster: Eh, can't have everything?

  • Kotaku seems to be the only appealing of the 3 to me. :) It must be those gaming cakes..

  • Destructioid is awful, but Workman is the worst. He'll put up any kind of story to draw hits to the site, most recently the "MGS is coming to XboX360" crap stories.
One a side note, in one of his MGS posts, he was bragging that he had noticed that the Playstation logo was removed from the trailer, like 2 months ago. That was fine and all, but then the idiot mentions that sites like Kotaku an
