Clip: God of War 2, The First Boss Battle

Eye-gouging for the win. At this point, I don't think it's possible to get more excited about God of War 2. Oh wait, if they announced it was also getting ported for the PS3 with super-high res I'd get more excited, but besides that... no.

  • ZOMG I just heard that "they announced it was also getting ported for the PS3 with super-high res"!!!!

  • Hahaha wtf is up with *pushing back* the foot of the colossus :D

God i love this game already. Screenshots worried me but this was all i had to see. That boss fight looks bizarre, i can't believe how much they're able to wringe out of that hardware.

  • i dont own a ps2, but i just might have to for this game

  • definitely intense!

but i like how he struggles with the titan's foot with about the same difficulty as that of the elevator lever.

  • Will there be more than a measly three boss fights in this one?

  • This is exactly what people mean when they say that good games are much more important than HD. I'll take a game like this over a gorgeous-looking but crap-to-play PS3 or 360 game any day. From what I've seen, so far there are very few HD "next gen" games that look like they'll be as good as this one.

  • I presume it's at least 480p, 16:9? (The first one was.) If so, good enough! Let's play!

  • This is the first boss fight? Dang...this is going to get crazy.

  • The video was highly entertaining... the cinematography of the action is fantastic. However, it seems to me that there is too much scripted button pushing. While the on-screen action is great, I'd like to fully control my character rather than respond to button-mashing prompts. Just seems kind of tacky...

  • "Will there be more than a measly three boss fights in this one?"

Didya play the first game? And if so, didya play it on anything harder than easy?

  • Anyone find it weird that Kronos can stop a foot from crushing him, but then has a hard time pulling the lever to activate a lift?

  • I guess I'm the crazy one, because I'm not digging it. The boss sequences are completely scripted, so it's not like you're controlling the cool actions. And the "I am the god of War!" thing? Puh-lease. "I'm the god-damned Batman!" was as bad as this.

  • I'm also in the "don't own a PS2 anymore" camp but I'd consider buying one to play this game. It looks like it would be a lot of fun. I really love games where you have huge bosses that you have to battle. The finale of Serious Sam for example. ;)

  • Yeah the "I am the god of War!" thing was cheesy, just like the new guy from Devil May Cry 4 screaming "Slam dunk!" every other 10 seconds ... other than that, this looks seriously impressive.

"Anyone find it weird that Kronos can stop a foot from crushing him, but then has a hard time pulling the lever to activate a lift?"

    I find it odd.

  • That would be an end boss on an xbox 360. Shows that the PS2 still has a whole lot of potential.

  • Only one word truly describes that clip: Epic!

  • Wow. I can't help thinking that not releasing this for the ps3 was a big mistake. I'm yet to take the plunge on a ps3 (i do have a wii) and seeing this game makes me realize that I can be more than happy to use the ps2 for the next year or so.

Had this been made for the ps3 it may have been enough to finally push me to take the plunge.

  • "I am the juggernaut, bitch! Don't you know who I am?"

  • very impressive video, I may just have to unpack my ps2 that hasn't been touched since God of War 1. The only thing I dislike is the cheesy "i am the god of war" sound bite. so lame.

  • who is this kronos... thought he was a titan

  • actually the lever looked a lot easier then the foot.

  • Yes, some parts of the boss battles are scripted, but the rest of the game isn't, and there are big parts that aren't scripted. Basically, if it's like GoW1, you have to do the right things to get to the sequence and then get the sequence right and you're back into freeform.

  • dont watch this video if your into spoiler and game walkthrough...

    WHERE IS THE SPOILER ALErT!

  • They meant Kratos, not Kronos.

  • Weak.

    Looks dated.

    Why didn't they make GoW2 for PS3?

  • "I guess I'm the crazy one, because I'm not digging it. The boss sequences are completely scripted, so it's not like you're controlling the cool actions."

How would you design it so that you could control the cool actions? Perhaps by having the player do a button press? Kinda like how the game is currently doing it...

    Note: I didn't like GOW1.

  • This makes me want to go back and play God of War on the hardest difficulty.

  • I can just imagine how the colossus must feel. This must be like swatting a persistent bee away.

  • Crecente:

Do you know if it has the same dosage of sensuality like the first one? (ethereal robes beautiful goddesses and/or slaves).

I thought it really added to the mature feeling the whole GOW1 had like a really good mythological epic "a la" Clash of Titans/Troy/Gladiator.

    Thanks!.

  • Kirth,
I'm pretty sure the sensuality deal is back. Once again, nudity is listed on the back of the box next to the rating. More fake, exposed breasts. Personally I didn't dig it. I understand where you're coming from with the mature, mytho feel. Unfortunately, in our culture today, it seemed kind of tacked on in order to push the envelope a bit more. For example, fourteen year olds are going to shits and giggles when they see that kind of thing -- resulting in them blabbing more about the game.

    Dunno...just my take.

  • Square:

I also understand your POV, but as we all know the whole Greek/Roman myth is full of what god seduced who or who is a son or daughter born of what illicit union (Zeus being the greatest lover/abuser of the whole Pantheon), so I do feel it is an intrinsic part of it.

When I first acquired the game I did not expect at all the whole partial nudity approach, I was just excited with the reviews pouring from all over the world and I failed to check the rating, being that I am a "grownup". ;)

I still find it funny how some partial nudity can have everyone raising their fists in outrage to the heavens but someone with a chainsaw decapitating people, being in games or movies does not.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your opinion and for the tip.

  • Elixir:
I finished GoW on hardest difficulty. There's about 3 places that are not possible to enjoy (like the goddam Cerebrus pups first time you meet them), but otherwise, it's a blast. Do it.

  • "I am the juggernaut, bitch! Don't you know who I am?"

My favorite line in that skit was when Lilandra fires a plasma bolt at Juggernaut and he says, "Silly bitch! Your weapons cannot harm me!"

  • "My favorite line in that skit was when Lilandra fires a plasma bolt at Juggernaut and he says, "Silly bitch! Your weapons cannot harm me!""

    Best line ever.

Anyway, the game starts on Rhodes I'm assuming?

  • Even though I can see how scripted it is, from a technical standpoint, it is extremely impressive for a PS2. There is a hell of a lot of stuff going on. Resolution and invariable texture quality issues aside, that would put many "next gen" boss battles to shame.

  • Guessing I'm the only one who was amused by the cheesy quotes. The first chance I get, somebody at my University is going to be told that "I WILL MAKE YOU SUFFER!" =D

  • Kirth:

"I still find it funny how some partial nudity can have everyone raising their fists in outrage to the heavens but someone with a chainsaw decapitating people, being in games or movies does not."

Violence is faked with special effects. The actors in movies don't actually die or lose limbs. But when they get naked, they really DO get naked, and the nudity is very real.

  • Now this is a game. Come on man sony should have kidnapped this team by now...LOL and got them started on the PS3. I'll be happy to get this one though. scripted events or not.... this shit is cool as hell... Way better than putting the controller down and watching...LOL

I don't mind the cheesy ness though it adds comedy to it... He's a greek god the only thing not chees was the pimplious action they got...LOL

  • Too many LOL's Runna, hurts my eyes.

Any who, I had forgotten how amazing GOW 1 was, this video has gotten me excited again. More than likely, the last game I'll play for the PS2, I hope it's on the same level as the original.

I think Shadow of the Colossus (a different game) got it right on the gameplay controls, where you have total freedom of control of your character as you board the boss, hang on for dear life, and do the stabby.

IMHO, the scripted button pressing (like in God of War II here) gets kind of stale, because there is no freedom of control. I prefer games like Shadow of the Colossus where you have total control of your character during these boss fights.
