And by Xbox Live, I really mean "the internet", the hateful underbelly outlet of many a lonely existence. The above clip, via GayGamer, recorded over the course of 11 nights of Halo 3 online gaming, was captured and edited by an Xbox Live gamer who went by the handle xxxGayBoyxxx. According to the YouTube details on the greatest hits compilation of tacky behavior, the openly gay gamer writes that the responses were unprovoked, but that "not everything in this video was said with hate." The audio is, unsurprisingly, not safe for work, but is very illustrative of the maturity levels in public matches of many online games.

when you've got a nickname like that... and how does one provoke ? slip his hand in their pants?
How am I not surprised?
Kids on the internet are ignorant, This is breaking news?
Really, you can't be too terribly surprised, even if it is sad and immature. It's just part of the whole trash talking thing that goes on with multiplayer gaming.
Honestly, I still play multiplayer games generally with people in the room with me rather than online. The friendly trash talking never gets beyond PG, but that does feel like a rarity, sadly.
Most of those gamers weren't kids.
I'm not gay or easily offended, but this is why I don't play online games. It's not like I "can't handle" the language, but I fail to see why I should PAY MONEY to Microsoft to hear teenage boys call me faggot or n---er or whatever else.
I'm happy Smash Bros. is going to get that weird style of online that has all the plusses and none of the minuses of online play.
Classic Live.
It is kind of sad how many homophobes are on xbox live. I am not surprised. I would rather swear at someone than call him gay.
Its not just live, its just "normal", in that its the norm. As much as I feel bad for everyone who has had to endure this bullshit (gay or just people having to listen to this shit), it should not be unexpected.
When you have a place that gives you the anonymity that is online, you have to expect to meet up with many fucktards.
*epic facepalm*
I watched that video with and could not stop laughing the entire time
"Hey GayBoy, I've got your back. You're back door"
@kidnicky: "I'm happy Smash Bros. is going to get that weird style of online that has all the plusses and none of the minuses of online play."
Amen to that.
It's things like this that make me happy that the PC community is lagging behind in voice chat.
wonder if it would have been any difference if he had gone with gayman insted of boy
That sickened me.
Yeah but can I say nobody,s surprised hearing stuff like that..I mean THIS IS HALO3... getting yaself a gamertag like that ya better get ya ears ready!
This is why I ditched the mic a LONG time ago on XBoxLive, and I don't have anything in my gamertag that would make me an easy target.
I just don't understand why 99% of the Xbox Live population throws out all socially acceptable behavior as soon as they log on. xxxGayBoyxxx should be able to send this video in with the names of the insulting players and they should all be banned.
Microsoft should employ several hundred monitors to play in games and ban people who are needlessly attacking players. I mean we do pay for Live.
Which is why I never use a headset on live. Never. Besides if I want to talk er write, I come here:) -> that came out really lame:(
And now I know why I have so little interest in online shooters.
ahhh can you hear the pointless news beep? lol just kidding yet live is full of homophobes we know this is there anything we can do? not really.
Sigh. Man, I JUST got finished putting away my "build it yourself neutron bomb kit". Oh well. Better go to the store, pick up some more super glue.
Lol just hearing this montage made me lol, though I never say such comments myself...
Yeah this is pretty standard for most on line gaming, with or with out a tag name like this. I dont even enable the VOIP on my account any more.
@kidnicky: Agreed. People think they can say whatever the hell they want online just because of the anonymity. This is one of the reasons why I try to avoid online gaming. Plus, it'll never be the same as enjoying multi-player with some of your real life buddies.
Can we please retire the "14 year olds swearing at you online" joke now?
Hold up, hold up, are you saying that there are assholes on X-box live?
Sweet baby Jebus, when did this happen?!?!
To think when microphones first came around for online gaming I was excited..the sad truth is that this what they are used for 99% of the time..jesus
@kidnicky: @dexterk03: There's this fantastic option called "Mute All." It does exactly what it sounds like it does; it mutes everyone. Period.
Please, for the sake of gaming itself, don't encourage Nintendo to offer half-assed online support because people could potentially maybe abuse it. Seriously. Optional Voice Chat > Scarecrows.
@Raziel3333: One word: genocide. I figure people who bash on others, verbally or otherwise, because of race, sexual orientation, or gender, earn themselves a one way trip to the work camps.
Or at least they will when I'm elected Pope.
@Lou3000: I think someone with the name xxxGAYBOYxxx should be banned. I bet if I logged in with the name pussystufferhugecock6000 I would get banned. Sorry, I'm just a heterosexual expressing my self. Yay for 21st century Politically Correct double standards!
WTF, some peoples kids....
This article is offensive to us homophobes.
I am crippling afraid of homosexual people, and just seeing one can cause me to crumple up into a ball, unable to move until they move away, and sometimes for hours after.
This article offensively labels people who spout bigoted and offensive statements as homophobes.
Homophobia is a serious disease, people! Don't trivialize it!
Wow, I just sent Friends request to xxxGayBoyxxx and FriendlyUncle
@kidnicky:
I'd say its more of a societal problem. The fact you felt comfortable enough to write 'faggot' but not 'nigger' sums it up quite nicely. I'm not calling you out personally or anything, just making a point. Both are very hateful words but it's interesting one's okay and the other's not.
I laughed.
Microsoft will probably force a name change if people complain about it.
@kidnicky: I'm not quite confident that we can say that yet. Or ever. Wii is not equipped for a great online experience. It's going to be even more irritating to set up games than it currently is on PS3... and that's not a plus.
But yes, if you have voice chat, things like this will happen. The majority of people aren't particularly polite to begin with, and when you give them relative anonymity, it only gets worse. However, taking away voice chat isn't the solution. Try playing a good game of Gears without communicating at all.
@Bon5ai: Yikes. You think 'GayBoy' is the same as saying 'pussystufferhogecock'? It's the same as saying 'StraightBoy' or 'ILikeGirls'. It's not offensive, it's just a declaration of your orientation.
This is why voice chat sucks (unless you're with friends).
I found this pretty funny..
But I have to wonder, why did he have that handle in the first place? I'm no homophobe but what's the deal?
Do you see xxxWhiteGuyxxx? BlackDude123? xXStraightMaleXx?
I understand pride and everything but I find it strange to show sexual orientation pride in your gamertag.
@Lou3000: I agree. As Live is a pay service, and GayBoy is certainly paying the same monthly fee as anyone else, he shouldn't have to put up with that nonsense. Especially that guy that said that he would like to hang him. That should be an instant suspension of his account. There isn't much along the lines of monitoring I suppose.
i'm disappointed to see people act like this, it's not surprising but still disappointing.
if i do work up the mental effort to swim the murky shores of this kind of stupidity, i dont really tend to say anything (unless it's my friends of course)
i just let my game play do the talking. (admittedly, if someone spends ages insulting you in the lobby, it's pretty satisfying to beat him senseless in the game)
@Bon5ai: Only difference is gay is a sexual preference (like if your name was "straight boy") and pussy and cock are both bannable words.
I seriously see nothing wrong with his name, it does not violate any TOS that I could imagine.
@ARboom:
Are you serious? Why did you type both?
@DeLoRtEd1: You see things like 'luv269', so I'm going to go with yes.
Wow... i'm not really surprised by the video, especially when anyone in here who has played Halo on-line knows knows that people will find anything to maock someone about. Having a gamertag like that just makes you an easier target. That is the risk you take with creating a name like that.
Wait, since when did you need to be openly gay or use a nickname with 'gay' in it to warrant that kind of commentary? Playing most any FPS online will expose you to that level of idiocy at any moment during the game whether it is aimed at you or you simply see/hear it being hurled at another player.
@Stueymon: Welcome to why I don't play Halo 3 :D
Why do they call it a phobia when you dont like gay people? When its black people it seems understandable that you may just not like them, racist or not. However, with the gays its been arranged that the only reason to dislike a gay person is because your afraid of them.
Odd..
Internet people suck, sometimes. Other times, you decide to stand on a Warhawk while somebody else flies it off while singing the Flight of the Valkyries. It's hit or miss, really.
Thank Jeebus for the mute button. Seriously.
@onidavin: Luv269 is a lot different than stating your demographic.
I already know the answer to my question, it's the same reason why we don't have white pride parades or straight pride parades.
