Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe hasn't decided to hook it's marketing wagon to a more reliable star, as its American counterpart has recently done. It's quite delighted to continue with creep-tastic imagery and poodle-enhancing analogies established by the This Is Living campaign. Games don't sell systems! Certainly not like lithe acrobats in vinyl pants do.

Go Michael! You can do it! Embed the video like there's no tomorrow!
It's like that old Primus video...except it sucks.
At least they have the homoerotic eurotrash demographic covered.
This reminds me of the "Mr Plow" commercial from The Simpsons... where Homer didn't even know if it was his commercial.
that was incredibly stupid.
SCEE can't even learn a bit from SCEA?
Oh god, everytime I see the acronym SCEE I just want to scream. I like my PS3, but I hate the department responsible for getting me games and suchlike. SCEE are, in my experience, complete and utter failures. Have you seen the EU PS store update? We only just got the Stranglehold demo! What about the awesome adverts the US gets? Nope, we get more "This is Living". No Everyday Shooter, no SPFHD, we can't even directly bitch to the Execs like on the Playstation Blog. SCEE is an absolute shambles and it's high time there was a serious reshuffle
Finally teh video.
And well, I have to say that, countrarily to every single stupid "this is living" video, this one rocked.
Even though I'm really fed up by all this new economy- flashy and obscure ads with little or no content. It reminds me of the "Mr. Plow" ad that Homer Simpson commissioned to some poshy artist. Like, whoa :D
Meh, as far as ads go it could've been worse (we've seen it!). If you knew it was a PS3 ad (which you don't at first, or ever) it doesn't seem bad in retrospect, but that does not a great ad make.
I thought it was odd, but the important thing here is, you'll remember it. It also touches on most of the important areas and doesn't do so in a technical way. All in all I'd have to say it's a pretty decent commercial, albeit strange one.
7/10
@SG79: Hahaha wow you are so right. I'm gonna see if I can find that online now.
That has to be one of the strangest game commercials I've ever seen.
It's up there with Sega's weirdness for Saturn:
[www.youtube.com]
@SG79:
Call Mr. Plow, that's my name, that name again is Mr. Plow.
Was that the Burger King with a gun? What great cross marketing! ;)
@SG79: Oo, great minds think alike :P
I live in Europe and I play games yet I do not understand who are they targeting with this type of commercials? Crazy ex-circus members with a need for a multimedia power-horse? I just don't get it.
At some point in that video, did they infer that the Cell Processor was infested with Nano-machines that would "update" it?
Are we in danger of PS3-robot Armageddon AGAIN!?
I love the bullet dodging at the end. That shit made me giggle.
The commercial is not bad in itself, but it definitely is going the opposite route of the stateside campaign, which is chock-full of action and gameplay footage.
I know its working here with sales, but who knows what works in Europe. They wouldn't be pumping this out there if it wasn't working...one hopes.
They realize that homosexuals are the main buyers of PS3s. Well, at least the ballerina in the blue had a banging ass.
i like the ad, but god the awesome one that SCEA came up with needs to be imported to EU
Was that Zero Suit Samus?
But seriously how does this appeal to the masses?
Poodle-poofing and a topless man undulating while being shot at with a gold bullet dosen't do anything for me, but maybe across the atlantic things are very different.
I almost feel like this is proof that people aren't buying the PS3 for games at all. They are just blind fanboys waiting for this wish lists to be filled. If I owned one, I'd just be mad waiting for decent games (aside from Ratchet and Clank) to show up. I'm not opposed to owning one, but just not with their current lineup.
I love that the same people who are usually and probably offended by the fact they belong to a marketing demographic are usually the first ones to criticize the very thing they despise.
Apathy is fatal to this system.
In all fairness, it's more relevant than some guy in the tub monologuing about how life is pointless.
Why the hate? I kinda liked it! It's wacky.
It's hard to admit it but as much as I love my 360, this commercial really has me wondering if I should trade it in for a Cirque du Soleil.
Thats Europe. the usa commercials are xtreme
LOL. I actually really enjoyed that one. Over-the-top in a goofy entertaining way rather than obnoxiously pretentious. Kind of reminded me of Moulin Rouge.
@ashcraft:
It's Sony! Plus if it's not filled with explosions, and hot graphics most people here will think it's stupid. To me, Sony was thinking a bit outside the box with this one. It's like showing off all sorts of modern advancements with a 1920's filter
If that's supposed to hook our Easterly brethren, I'll admit right here and now that I'll never understand Europeans.
I appreciate the artistry and theatrics boiled into the avant-garde way they're pushing the PS3 and its features, but the agency in charge of this campaign has got to be shooting for reward recognition-- they've totally nailed the wrong f***ing demographic if they think that's supposed to sell a video game system to anyone but foptastic poodle washers and fans of Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge.
Ok, I happend to like the ad. Personally, I think it showcases or I should say is an example of why I like SONY products. They take chances and aren't afraid to produce the wierd. We should applaud them for being out of the box and not catering entirely to jacked up youth with an abundance of testosterone. I use my PS3 as a complete media center and love the fleshed out functionality it provides. Sure, it needs some improvements but once you begin to play with the XMB in depth you realize there's a lot of funtionality there now. And we know it will continue to grow. My primary use of my PS3 continues to be games but I can't deny the enjoyment of it's other features.
This ad was cool and well put together. It was a system selling ad and not a game related ad. Understanding it's purpose makes it easier to understand.
Needs more cowbell
This is an absolutely horrible commercial.
I actually kinda liked this one. It was quirky. Also, it clarified things this time.
OMFG. Just when I thought Sony stopped with all the stupid advertising. BAM! This...
I don't get SCEEs ads...the one in the tube is stupid with the baby staring at a log in the middle of the path...
@Sasuntsi Davit:
You didn't get this one either? They pretty much spelled it out in "averagepeoplespeak"
Am i the only one that finds the overall beauty of the actors to be lacking compared to regular advertisements?
And when are we going to send a signed petition to Sony asking them to do more game-themed commercials rather than these creepy commercials? I'd like to see a commercial for Warhawk or Lair where he's standing in the middle of the world and then everything goes crazy with bad guys and explosions and more.
I like it.
Remember, Sony's games division is now separated by region.
Perhaps European PS3s contain acid. Not the burn-your-hand acid, the happy-bouncing-monkeys LSD acid.
weirdness... the thing is, commercials are supposed to sell you stuff, make you want to buy it, and does this really say "buy me!"? and i see sony is still going the weird artistic route especially the part with the robot turning into a female... creepy. however, i did like the bullet dodging part at the end.
Also, the main guy looks like Sander Cohen.
@Spiderbait:
Um, the actors were intentionally chosen to not be models, but rather people with unique faces and sometimes caricature type gestures. It's sort of an homage to older french cinema
Creepy, but no more than the Burger King.
Sony: we have no f-ing clue what we're doing. TM
@PapaBear434: at least in the BK commercials you get a sense of what they're trying to sell, unlike this one which seems to make you question your sexuality
@ThEjOkErIsWiLd:
The main purpose of advertising is to keep your name/brand salient within the minds of the customer. Your are more likely to purchase a product from a company which you are familiar with than a "no name brand". Yes, the ultimate goal is to have the consumer actually purchase that which you advertise, but it doesn't have to occur right away.
@ThEjOkErIsWiLd:
Look at the "Jump In" Xbox 360 ad campaign as collaborative evidence.
ps. the facial expression of the bullet dodger at the end is pure gold :D
While we are posting videos, there is a new "PSP Feature" trailer at [www.gametrailers.com]
