49ers Play Halo 3

I thought there were an awful lot of really tall, really big guys playing during last night's Halo 3 premiere event in San Francisco's Foreign Cinema on Mission Street. Turns out they were a bunch of players from the 49ers football team.

I actually spent a good half hour or so playing with a player I suspect was Vernon Davis on a split-screen in some friendly Team Slayer without even realizing it. Had I known, I would have taken a picture of the guy. He was a friendly, kinda newb player, but really wasn't much worse at the game then I was.

Moments early, one of the split-screen spots on the same television was taken up by Justin Kan of Justin TV fame. Hopping on the game after him, I was rewarded with a flood of invites and messages from his legion of fans how had been watching him play the game live through his hat-mounted cam.

Last night was an interesting mix of hardcore gamers, game journalists, analysts, Msoft execs (Shane Kim was there) and other sorts of celebs.

I had a chance to sit down and speak with Brian Jarrard, community lead of Bungie.net, about the game (check back Monday for that feature) and what they expect to come from the beta. I was going to talk with Shane Kim (the handlers tell me Peter Moore reads Kotaku daily, so I think I was a shoe in), but he had an endless line of interviews to do and I decided to leave the event about 11 p.m.

As I walked out the party was still going strong, with nearly all of the screens still filled with gamers and two hours left before they started hustling people out of the restaurant.

  • I wonder how much $$ those football players forked over to get in. Also, Does justin TV put up VODs? cuz id like to see the highlights.

  • Welcome to Kotaku: All Halo, all the time!

I know, I know, the beta just now came out... "Most anticipated game of this generation so far..." blah blah blah. But COME ON!

I chalk it up to nothing else game related happening this weekend. Not really Kotaku's fault. We need to start a rumor, though, to get off of the Halo kick.

    How about this:

I heard Will Wright delayed "Spore" because aliens visited him and told him to cancel the project, because it came far to close to the truth of US being part of an intergalactic game of the same type.

More on this story as it develops...

  • Wow seriously as much as I enjoyed playing halo 1 and 2, Kotaku is really approaching critical mass with mentions of halo.

  • Papabear you should chalk it up to it being news, and not have such an attitude about it. I didn't see you around complaining about the EA or Sega coverage earlier in the week.

  • Dont be jealous everyone. Bungie cant help the fact that Halo is the shiznit.

  • It's only natural that a game tons of people are hyped about will get plenty of coverage, it's been done with other games but suddenly now that it's Halo, people complain.

  • @crecente:

Truth be told, I wasn't here earlier in the week. I had family visiting, and they take up to much of my "me" time.

Even still, I have already said that it's not really your guys fault. This is big news in the gaming world (despite what individuals may feel about the series, it does have a huge built in audience,) combined with the fact there is little else going on right now.

It just swirls together into the perfect storm of "OMG HALO!!!" all over the internet. Kotaku is no exception to this world.

Seriously, if you weren't reporting on every tidbit of Halo news, what else is there to report on this weekend?

  • world = rule

Don't know how that got transposed.

  • As long as Kotaku doesn't post news about Uwe Boll or Second Life. I'm not complaining.

  • @PapaBear: Stop complaining. We rarely get Halo 3 news, so don't complain now that we get a bombardment of Halo 3 videos and information. It's only 1 weekend.

  • @ReWeasel:

Trust me, the 49ers didn't pay a dime to get in the event--publicists love to invite athletes to events like this because their presence generates additional media coverage. There were a couple of guys from the NY Giants at the Gears launch party here in NYC last year, and sure enough there were photos of them palling around with Peter Moore in the local tabbies the next day.

  • I love Halo. But seriously.. Kotaku is going way overboard with the Halo news its getting real boring. Like trying to milk as much coverage as they can with the Halo stuff. I stll love you Kotaku ^___^
    Just..
    Please...
    No more Halo! @_@

  • @whitehawk:

Calm down. I was PRAISING H3 in one of the other million threads because it actually looked interesting to me (especially more so the first two.)

All I am saying is that usually, a big game makes announcements, periodic updates are usually interspersed a bit more. But right now (weekend, game drought) there is nothing else, so all we get is Halo Overload.

People are so damn sensitive to a freaking JOKE, the operator of the site included apparently.

  • @PapaBear: We do 18 posts a day over the weekend, this weekend expect 18 a day, plus the halo 3 and FF stuff. So, yes, there's plenty of non Halo news going on.

  • @spargo666: I dont think three posts (vid, impressions and celebrity) is really milking a story about one of the top selling video game franchises.

  • It *was* weird, to see all of those big guys there at the event -- I'm 6'5" and 250, and even I felt small compared to some of them. At least they all brought cute girlfriends.

  • Halo 3 is going to get massive hype because of its track record, and from the looks of it's multiplayer beta, were in store for yet another killer app from the Bungie camp. Instead of being angry at the popularity of the franchise, congratulate the company for making an excellent franchise.

    @crecente:

You'd get complaints either way, I'd wager. Even if it were only two posts people would complain of excessive coverage, and if it were only one post other people would complain of undercoverage.

I have to say, you're an amazingly patient and reasonable guy. If I had your job I would have lashed out against tons of people already. Hell, I have anyway. Good thing I don't run a news blog. ;)

  • @crecente:

Ok, my bad, my bad. Guess it was just a bad series in a row then. I relent, retreat, and give up even.

  • Of course, because we haven't had... I don't know. About 10 square / FF related posts in the last two days? When something happens, it gets written about. If anyone finds that they don't want to read the stuff there is a very simple answer.

    Don't read it.

  • I was referring to the amount of halo news recently, over the past few days there have been several storys about it. I know! I know! It cant be helped that there is so much news being given out at the moment, Its just makes the story stale to see it so often if ya get what I mean >_<

Maybe im just angry since halo is getting all this publicity that it really doesnt need or really deserve. (Aint a fan of what Ive seen of Halo 3 so far)

When some news/screens/footage of the single player comes around then Ill be all for it! ^____^ Cant wait!

Didnt really mean Kotaku was milking it, simply the amount of coverage fo one game so quickly made me like..
"Hmm.. This dont seem right to me!"
I dont want Kotaku to become sell outs like some other game sites such as CVG...

  • @Psychotext:

I would have made comment to that regard too. Didn't know pointing something out was a lychable offense.

If I REALLY wanted to be picky, I could point out that this particular thread started based on an article discussing how a bunch os spoiled rich athletes got into a gaming conference.

When you are discussing the guest list as breaking news, I believe you have taken the story as far as it can go for now.

  • @crecente: Yet, there was no one complaining about the back to back Sony Home coverage. I never saw a Xbox or Nintendo fan say that Kotaku had been paid off at that time, or that there was too much Sony news, but leave it to the Sony fans to complain about a few Halo articles. I AM SHOCKED AND APPALED /sarasm

    @Kyle 81
Yeah, there are plenty of games coming for the 360, so thats not the reason for so much Halo news. I just got C&C 3, and Shadowrun comes out at the end of this month, while Two Worlds(a RPG) comes out next week if I remember correctly. Troll on!

  • Image of Toasticus Toasticus at 01:34 PM on 05/12/07 *

    @usedtabe:

In my best Joan Cusack impression: "That is shyahking. Shyahking."

  • @usedtabe:

Well home was something new, never done before and it was actually some shocking good news for Sony. Halo 3 however is nothing new, evryone new what it was gonna be before any shots were released (Personally I was expecting more)
When there has been countless posts JUST about the multiplayer, which really is failing to inspire me to get the game. I know there has only been news about the multiplayer but its fragging in my opinion, im not interested in the multiplayer after what ive seen, maybe if they serously add some stuff to it but meh, im looking forward to the single player

I like halo, so im not sony fanboying or anything, im just pissed that bungie is going so conservative, pissed that every news story aint showing anything new. Im fearing for the single player too...

  • @spargo666: I would agree about the single player, but I think they(Bungie) don't want a Halo3Sucks.com on their hands, as I've seen some of the changes made to 2 for 3 were some of the complaints from Halo2Sucks.com
And Home, while "console new", is not entirely new, as many have pointed out with the similarities to Second Life

  • @usedtabe:

Yeah, Im really hoping for a great single player ^_^
Would have been cool if they did an insomniac and made it single player only...
Maybe not but dammit! I want a good story this time!

Second Life does the whole online community/world thing better than Home will I think but what is new about home is the ability to share content, and watch trailers/movies/videos streamed that and the fact that second life looks life crap now, Homes looking so Hawt.
Those will be its strongest features, if Sony can pull it off properly id be damn impressed.

Thanx for telling me about halo2sucks.com! haha! Never new about it xD
    Should be a good read!

  • @spargo666: you'll love it

  • Image of Toasticus Toasticus at 03:17 PM on 05/12/07 *

@usedtabe: I'm laughing out loud right now looking at that site. It's so absurdly out of touch. From their Current Talking Point:

"Why make changes? No one wants them and it costs you money!"

If someone had posted that as a comment here, everyone else would think they were being sarcastic. The "Sell Out" stamps on the Bungie logo are a hilarious touch. That site is the species of creature so absurd that any attempt to make a parody would only end up seeming reasonable in comparison.

There may be some valid criticism buried in the site, but the creators seem wholly irrational so I'll have a laugh and move on.

  • vernon davis... he's my boy!!! whatabout frank gore was he there too? i love the niners

  • After reading some of the comments here, I just want to say im appreciating your coverage of Halo 3, so far. Im not surprised, because its actually just typical kotaku quality. I think the posts so far have been spot on: rounding up some interesting videos, and throwing some first impressions and observations; everything i could expect from a gaming blog.

Also, thumbs up for the ff party coverage.

    Keep up the good work.

  • I like the Halo posts thanks. I think everyone complaining should just be quiet and not read them if they're not interested.

  • @TemplaerDude: I think you should just not read the complaints if you don't want to be exposed to them as much.

  • @TemplaerDude: I made a joke. Joke. Humorous observation. Didn't know I would be attacked.

@usedtabe: So, I'm a PS3 fan, and that's why I am dismissing Halo 3, eh? Not quite, as I until recently (though briefly) owned a 360 and was actually going to try to get into Halo 3.

I even said that the game was shaping up nicely in another post.

But one post after another regarding every detail (including the guest list) just seemed overkill, so I decided to take a jab and make a joke about it. If I had known that Kotaku-ites had such thin skin and exposed nerves, I would have shut my trap.

  • People play video games news at 11

  • For those who are interested, the justin.tv footage of the even can be found here http://www.justin.tv/archives?tip=63. I think he plugged his cam directly into av output of the TVs, so there's some pretty solid footage. He also captured some footage of the even itself between games. It's definitely worth a look.

  • I hate how people always say theres better FPS shooters on the computer, it's just a nice console shoother.. why? because I am one of the most competitive computer gamer out there and I absolutely love halo for its unique feel on gameplay and the level of fun it creates for me. I've played CS for 5 years religiously and even got into cal-m. I've pretty much played every first person shooter out there, and trust me, there almost all different in their own ways.

So no, Halo is just not another "ordinary" shoother. There is not a single other sh ooter that has the unique feel of halo and its frustrating, competitive, easy to learn, neck and neck matches, then halo is for you. Granted, it can be like that in any game, but Halo just has a way to make those moments so memorable and fun, It's like a whole new experience.

  • Let me go on record saying I don't like Halo, but I nonetheless expect tons of coverage about it since it's hugely popular, and copmlaining about a lot of coverage over a monstrous franchise is pretty stupid.

Now Second Life, I still say it's not a game, and will keep bitching about all the posts about it.
