Well here's one rumor that got confirmed pretty damn quickly. A reader sent us in a scan from Japanese magazine Shonen Jump, confirming that a Final Fantasy IV (2 stateside) 3D remake is in the works for the DS.
I know I should be impressed by Cecil's new 3D look, but it's giving me this odd sort of Viewtiful Joe vibe. Honestly I don't think this game needed to be remade. It was perfect as it was and this...this just feels wrong. Like meeting a cute young girl who sounds exactly like your grandmother when she talks. Disturbing.
Thanks for the scan Riyu!

I wonder if they would then go back to FF1 and FF2 and redo those for the DS?
I like it, but I'm a lot more excited by the Dissidia news that was in Jump too.
I'm thinking of just mailing Square Enix my wallet. In the long run, it'd save a lot of trouble.
@Kuraudo: The wallet will cost extra because it will be shipped as a package. If you just enclose your credit card, the postage applied will be much cheaper.
I agree that this remake is too soon. NES remakes are okay, but we're still playing SNES-looking games on GBA. If they insist on remakes, then FF7-9 should be first: Playstation-era polygons are just too painful to look at now.
Of course, I'll buy it. FFIV is my favorite of the series.
oh yeah sweet! glad i didnt pick up the GBA rehash, this is awesome considering square did mention that b/c of their success with FF3, they would consider doing 3D remakes of additional parts. man i cant wait till see FF6 in 3D. 4 and 6 were pretty classics.
Now bring out Chrono Trigger too >=o!
C'mon Square, I want something new and exciting. Bring back that magic from the '90s, before you became a Final Fantasy Factory.
O.O
My heart just fluttered. That is my FAVORITE Final Fantasy, and I cannot wait to relive Cecil's redemption all over again ^^
Go Go Square Enix!
Maybe it's just me, but Cecil looks really feminine. Something about how close his feet are when he's standing upright. Kinda like Final Fantasy Tactics, but taken to whole other quasi-creepy level.
Oh god, why do you keep subjecting us to your perverted fantasies, Fahey?
We don't want to know your masturbation material!!
This is the only way I would probably play FF4. Can't move diagonally argh!!!!
BRING OUT FF6 DS >:)
All I know is, Business Pirate approves. That is all I need.
They keep taking my money! I know I should know better... but I love this particular game a lot... those bastards keep taking and I keep giving.

The Dissidia game seems to revolve around FFIX which to me is a brilliant move
My lord! Cecil!
Cecil always intimidated me, that blasted suit...
Now that I think about it, it does have a Viewtiful Joe vibe...
FFIV was my favourite out of all the FF's and having it appear in 3d on the DS is the best thing i oculd hear. I didnt really want a remake of it on one of the next gen home consoles since that would mean they would probably include voice acting, which could have a mixed affect.
@shaunomacx: It has Zidane, Kuja and FF1 warrior in it. It looks like it's a celebration of twenty years of the franchise and they chose those characters to show first because they weren't initially designed by Nomura.
@Kuraudo: in that case i stand corrected. anything with Zidane and Kuja must be worth a buy. Never did like Nomuras work as much as Amanos though.
@shaunomacx: Final Fantasy I & IX.
now just do 6 and i'll be happy.
@code.monkey:
When I first played through FFIV I thought Cecil the Knight was a duck. Cecil the Paladin I thought was a clown. Granted, I was only like eight years old at the time.
Now if only they made a remake of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 ...
As excited as I am that this is coming out, I know I'm going to wind up being really disappointed. One of the great things about the old SNES RPGs (FF IV, FF VI, Chrono Trigger) was that the graphics were just crappy enough for the player to have to use their imagination and fill in the blanks. Just looking at the four screenshots...ouch. That's not how I imagined it at all. This might just ruin the memory of one of my favorite RPGs of all time. I can't help but hope they'll pull it off, though.
If this is as bad as FF3, I ain't buying it for sure.
it vaguely looks like a PSP title judging from the aspect ratio
I, for one, am ALL FOR this remake. This game was my introduction to the series way back on the SNES, and having played most all of them this is still one of my favorites. I think the 3D graphics look really nice and I can't wait to experience the world of FF4 with this new design.
The announcement of this game also carries some interesting implications for the possibility of other games in the series being redone. Regarding the FF7 remake on PS3, Square said that they wouldn't ever remake a game for a console on which the original version could be played. Yet here we have a new version of FF4 when the GBA version (obviously playable on the DS) was released a year and a half ago. Seems the cash flow from FFIII DS has caused them to change their minds.
I forsee plenty of commenters here decrying the decision to remake this, but personally the thought of playing such a classic and memorable game with a modern facelift has me very excited, and impending 3D versions of V and VI now seem likely on the DS. Hate on haters, but IMHO this is an incredible announcement for fans of classic FF.
Booyakasha! Now, one more to go (yeah they can skip 5).
i prefer ffVI,i love final fantasy (L)!!!
@micster: a squarenix remake of MG and MG2? Interesting concept!
@shaunomacx: The screenshots appear to be 4:3 (standard aspect ratio), not widescreen a la PSP.
Also, the fact that the page says 'DS' 6 times and PSP not at all should be a hint... :) (I know you weren't necessarily meaning that it was wrong; just saying.)
@shaunomacx: besides where it says DS everywhere?
the aspect ratio is closer to DS anyway. PSP is much wider.
:)
ha! (I presume less-than) a minute apart for something ten minutes ago. :P
Interesting....
I see a Final Fantasy V, VI, VII, VIII and IX coming......
i just shat in my pants. kotaku owns me a pair of new underwear
God damn it I just bought this for the GBA!
All I ask is... "WHY?!"
So they remade 1 & 2 on Playstation, than on GBA, than there remaking it yet again on PSP, then 3 gets a remake on DS, now 4 gets remade on GBA and now its getting remade again on the DS?
Seriously, Square how about you remake every FF title on DS, PSP, PS3, Wii, and 360 just to satisfy everyone. I liked Square better when they only made games on ONE system.
I hated FFIV...
Honestly, this looks fantastic to me. I mean sure it isn't a completly original title. However, a full 3D remake of one of my favorite games, one hundred percent welcome news to me.
Is anyone with me in saying I really, really don't want to play this game again?
I mean, Advance was good and all, but...gah.
I don't think I really want to play another Final Fantasy game for a while. Especially after the crapfest that was III.
Square Enix, you know you can make a different game right? Not everything has to be Final Fantasy.
And no one say The Last Remnant because I don't have a PS3.
If anything, I think Square Enix should be focused on getting Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana on the Virtual Console... then they can go back to this!
@Leon2ky
Blasphemy! burn the witch!
A remake of FF4 is good, but I'd honestly like to see this treatment applied to FF6. :)
@DigitalHero:
I agree, but not anytime soon. My guess is that FF4 DS won't hit until next holiday season at the soonest, and even if Square puts out a new remake every year, I cannot imagine they'll get to 7 before Nintendo announces the Nintendo DS successor.
Heck, considering the age of the DS, they may not even get to six before Nintendo announces it.
Oh, and the PSX FF1-2 4, 5, and 6 re-releases were not actually remakes.
FF1-2 was a port of a remake Square made for the Wonder Swan. 4-5-6 were just a port of the SNES version with added CG cutscenes a a few minor tweaks.
So this will be the first, "actual remake," of Final Fantasy 4.
Er, well, GBA version was a heavily modified port, so that doesn't count either.
I agree with our furry author's sentiments completely. Not to mention, 3D looks like crap on the DS, especially when square-enix does it.
@SanjiX:
Well, at least now everyone will be able to experience it am I right? Square makes more money. Everyone should be happy.
I'm on board. FF2 was the first FF I played, and it got me hooked. Been awhile since I played it, so this will be a nice way to revisit it.
@code.monkey: It's not just you. I hope that 3D Cecil isn't final.
You know, when I first heard about the FF GBA remakes, I said to myself "Self, we'd definitely buy FFV if they decided to use that upcoming DS wifi system to have custom party on party VS. battles, wouldn't we?"
Self replied "Of course we would, stupid. That'd be awesome."
I replied "You're damn right it would be," and crossed my arms, nodding sagely.
My manic delusions seem more and more likely every day.
@Narsil: There's It's a Wonderful Life too which looks like it could be a new hit IP like KH.
I still think they should have went with the PSP unless they plan on really using the DS's Dual Screen for more than just a novelty. Don't get me wrong the DS is a great system and all but the PSP just has more power to make polygons look better.
@SanjiX: Until someone proves Square otherwise, Final Fantasy games, remakes, re-remakes, rereleases and etc. sell. And when it takes about one eight the cost to make a remake (even less for just a re-release), then they will continue to make them, just to have a steady flow of sales while they make their next huge, bajillion dollar FF game.
@Kuraudo: Dammit. World, not Life.
I never get the Japanese name wrong, but always mix up the English one for some reason.
Honestly I'm pretty pumped. I will be all over this. Seeing FF6 getting the same treatment will be awesome too, but I am superjazzed for this.
I think it's inevitable that 3D remakes of V and VI are definitely coming. Remakes of VII through IX would probably be on consoles or maybe PSP. If they showed up on the DS they would most likely be direct ports. Not to mention that I don't know they could put all that on one cartridge
Who knows. I'm glad at least this version is confirmed. But I still stand by my statement that the remakes are a little overkill.
Yes, Squenix is milking me. And yes, I'll probably buy this when it comes out.
The Final Fantasy III remake was really very good I thought. The main problem it had was the game itself was kind of boring. But the quality was good, and if they can do the same for FFIV without raping my memories of it, then I'll be quite happy.
I'd much rather play FFIV remade like FFIII than the FFIII remake.
So yeah Squenix, my wallet is open and ready for the raping.
This does not feel wrong. FF5 and 6 now need to be remade like this as well as Chrono Trigger. the first two not as much as CT, but CT deserves to be portable and to look beautiful as ff3/dq9 do.
in fact, CT DS looking like DQ9 type graphics would be unbelievable
I would rather these games get remade to PS3 or 360 than a portable.
@Luziphir:
I couldn't disagree more. 3D on DS IMO looks great, when done correctly a la FF3DS, DQM:J, etc.
@thebluick: Do you have any idea how much the development costs would be if they had done it on either of those systems?
One thing is for sure, the profit from sales wouldnt have covered it.
Not to mention the lack of thought put into your comments when you said X360, due to the fact of the low numbers of people owning it in Japan. The same could be said for the PS3 also, when both of those systems are put into comparison against how many people own DSes here.
wow, so awesome.. i played that game on my gba but halfway through my savegame got corrupted and i really didnt want to start over again..
but heres me motivation to complete this awesome game, thanks square enix
I think that Final Fantasy would be remade for PS3 or Xbox360 eventually (probably 7 8 or 9), but I don't think it'll happen until either console has a world-wide dominance. 360 is dominating, but not in Japan. PS3 is doing better in Japan, but not world wide
