/FILM gives us a gander at the teaser poster for the upcoming Castlevania flick directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. Ok, the image is very moody and foggy... wait, "Dracula Begins" ? Oh boy, this is going to get ugly.
After supposedly being dropped by Dimension films over a disagreement about Mr. Anderson's less than stellar script, Universals' Rouge Pictures has picked up the project. A lot of people have dogged Anderson and talked about what terrible movies he makes. I wholeheartedly agree. In general his movies are large piles of crap on stale toast not fit for human or animal consumption.
There is that small side of me though that loves the guilty pleasure I get watching the D movie antics of Resident Evil in all it's crappy Saturday afternoon matinee glory. I get the same warm (read:nauseous) feeling watching those RE zombies eat human flesh as I do watching Elizabeth Berkeley devour that hamburger in Showgirls. There's no doubt in my mind that the Castlevania movie will suck, I just hope it sucks in the most cinematically awesome way.

That Street Fighter movie is going to suck really bad too since Capcom is working in conjuction with Hyde Park Entertainment or whatever, and all they've put out were low budget movies, one of which is that movie Anti-Trust. Look them up on IMDB, you'll be disappointed.
I think every Japanese game developer needs to hire an American/Canadian(since lots of film/tv is shot in these countries or produced by studios out of them) to tell them who to pitch their products to for film adaptions, because they certainly always pick the wrong people to make their films. DoA movie for example and the list goes on and on.
I didn't mind Resident Evil and AvP so much...they definately had *some* merit. Then again, I was drunk while watching them.
All the same, that poster is *yawn*.
I actually liked Aliens vs. Predator, and the RE movies didn't suck. Any ones better then Uwe Bole.
Ugh.. I can't wait until everyone starts bashing this for every reason under the sun.
so far so good with the poster
good find
I also liked the resident evil movies.
The mans a joke, all he does is videogame films. He's just an english Uwe Boll whose films suck 1% less than his german counterparts.
It's people like him that malign the possibilities of videogame films. He is why you don't get Ridley Scott or James Cameron doing them. As long as he's out there spewing crud with videogame flavour, nobody with any class will go near the genre. Leading to a host of blowhards saying you can't make videogames into films. No; Paul "WaterSports" Anderson can't make them, or a fat kraut, or any clones thereof. They scare the talent off.
I didn't mind Resident Evil that much to be honest, although i do have the oddest tastes in movies.
I would say at least its not Uwe, but i haven't had the (dis)pleasure of seeing any of his films yet so I'll wait until i finally watch one before i start moaning about him.
That poster looks... generic.
I bet the movie will be pretty generic too. And sucky.
The difference between Anderson and, say, Uwe Boll, is that Anderson has a healthy respect for the source material, while Boll has nothing but contempt for video games. Anderson likes video games, and he makes movies based on them that, while maybe not good cinema, are at least good fun. And that's all I ask for from my video games and movies.
Anderson can make a Castlevania movie that is as good as the source material will allow. But we're talking about a game that consists, almost entirely, of walking across the screen and whipping things. This is not Shakespeare. If we were talking about an adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus, or FFXII, it might be different. But if you're expecting high art out of a Castlevania adaptation, then the problem's not with the director.
K
Is "Dracula Begins" a subtitle or tag line? I hope it's the latter.
yea... dracula begins.
He begins what? His career as a lounge singer? His 12 step program? His line of facial cosmetics?
Also, the font they used looks all messy and lame. It reminds me of a goth kid who made a geocities page and wrote his name such that is is HARD CORE!
If you're going to make a Castlevania movie, it CANNOT be like RE or AVP, it actually needs to have a hell of a lot of artistic intent.
Anderson is not capable of doing that. This is a huge waste of potential for a phenomenal series like Castlevania.
We don't need Castlevania to be a typical action film like underworld, or every other vampire movie. They already exist so we don't have to keep remaking them.
/sigh
You can knock some of Anderson's work but Event Horizon is still one of my all-time favorites.
Well at least for the MGS movie Kojima is directing. That limits its suckiness, I suppose.
I could have made that poster in five minutes in Photoshop. Emboss layer tool FTW!
The guy really has guts, he lists RE and AvP in the poster like if they are going to generate some kind of positive impressions, when reality is a whole different beast. Those two movies sucked.
YES
what Graedus says:
"We don't need Castlevania to be a typical action film like underworld, or every other vampire movie. They already exist so we don't have to keep remaking them."
OK, they CAN keep making those movies. That is fine. What they shouldn't be doing is making just another run and gun/zombie/vampire movie and then taking a game and slapping its name on the movie when it doesn't really have anything to do with the game that it is named after.
I would rather they make good action movies and make up their own character names than good action movies that tack on a video game name and destroy any chance of a movie that looks and feels like the actual game. Like RE4, think we will ever see that made into a proper action movie now? Not a chance in hell and someone could have done a really good job on it.
Such will be the fate of castlevania. Someone out there could make a movie that looks and feels like symphony of the night played. But we are going to get a vampire movie and it will be called castlevania and the main character in it might have a whip. Other than that it won't be anything like the castlevania games.
why are they calling it castlevania when we all know its going to turn out to be van helsing 2
well said divad,
also, imbd says (as a rumour) that star trek's Riker will have a role in the film as the "grandfather".
just in case you weren't feeling crappy enough
...I seriously hope that the subtitle is just an accident and is not supposed to be a "clever" rip-off of "Batman Begins".
I can hear it now... "Oh, and the subtitle will be 'Dracula Begins'! Because, you know, Dracula is a vampire, and they turn into bats! Get it? So it will be, like, 'Bat-Man Begins'! Clever, ain't it?"
This is where Dracula begins. And probably ends too.
I think we're all ignoring the reason why this movie will suck. The plot sucks ASS. I'll be honest, Castlevania is one of my favorite franchises of 2d games. but i sure as hell don't play it for the plot. Guy gets sucked into an eclipse and finds dracula's remains, only to BECOME dracula himself? Wtf? It's just a vehicle to get from one incredibly beautiful area filled with addictive zombie slaying to another.
I just hope it takes place hundred of years ago, and looks all gothic and stuff. Because if it's a modernized version ... I might have to egg his house, that bitch.
ahhh.... so generic... what an amazing poster...
oh... ah... so generic...
What the heck...Mortal Kombat was made by Anderson and that was the best video game movie adaptation until Resident Evil which Anderson did which was good and then destroyed by the horrible piece known as Resident Evil: Apocalypse.
Of course Silent Hill is the reigning champ of Video Game movies, I won't be jumping on the bandwagon of this has to suck cuz it is by Anderson. I think some of his movies are good or pretty good. If it was Uwe Boll doing, no doubt it would suck.
For what it's worth, that castle is the Alcazar in Segovia, Spain. A quick trawl through Flickr comes up with a similar (but flipped) perspective:

Surely it's Rogue Entertainment?
People need to stop saying it's better than Uwe Boll. Eating a box of rotten oranges is better than Uwe Boll, does that mean I should overlook in inert grotesqueries?
As for Mr. Anderson, I find that if he doesn't write the film, it's usually better. The man is a decent to good director but a horrific screenwriter, and even has less talent at adapting works.
I'm not going to bother in any debates about his individual works because I've heard an arrange of them going from ResEvil/ResEvil Apocalhyse rocked/sucked/were so ungodly awful, Mortal Kombat was sooo off, and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (Written by Anderson, not directed) was one of the best game adaptions ever (I kid you not I had a roomate who swears that).
But one of the constants I find that Movies Directed by But Not Written By Anderson Are Better than ones he Wrote and Directed. For instance, Mortal Kombat He Didn't Write, Mortal Kombat Annihilation he did.
Umm K-OSS, Brent V. Friedman and Bryce Zabel wrote MK Annihilation, not Paul Anderson. In fact he had nothing to do with Annihilation in any way, you can check IMDb on that.
Resident Evil was awesome, RE Apocalypse was meh, It would have been good without that cheesy Nemesis . .
Its not strictly about the plot. As a few people mentioned here, the general art style of the series is important.
There is another aspect which may be overlooked... and that is, how good do the movies do? It won't be to Anderson's benefit if he stays true to a game and the fans love it but the movie flops in theatres.
The first RE movie sucked, while the second one was alright. He totally fucked up AvP hardcore. The only reason I even liked the movie because it had Aliens and it had Predators, otherwise the movie blew ass. Now he's going to ruin Castlevania, might as well call him Paul "Uwe" Anderson.
this is a very delicate movie. creators mus be extremely carefull in having castlevania in their hands. it's nopt van helsong, brothers grim or underworld or any of that crap (but i saw them , i have them and i like them too).must be very focused in every detail because big fans (like me
of course)will be focused in all the movie. the sound track the story, the costumes the enemys. the castle etc... but i hope they do a great job. and thank those guys for thinking in us the fans and also for the not much of fans of the game. y alredy told all fo my budiies.
