Zack & Wiki is a great game. And no one is buying it. Well, not no one, but not many people are! The game is posting shockingly low sales numbers. Could that be because the game makes people think? Or is it just that people are interested in the title? The game is challenging, but in a satisfying way. Capcom producer Hironobu Takeshita explains:
There are puzzles where, if you don't look properly at the hints in the start, you're going to be in trouble. All the answers that you need to solve the puzzles are there on the screen. There are some people who say they don't understand the puzzles, but really, they're not paying enough attention.
Hope poor Zack & Wiki sales doesn't mean Capcom is giving up on games where you hafta use your noodle!

I haven't gotten this yet but I'm going to. I'm sure it'll be great to have a challenging game too.
at least they arent saying that we are dumb
and im hoping that the sales pick up soon since it is a fabulous game....and the price just makes it so much sweeter :D
I would buy it if i owned a Wii. Since there still to hard to obtain a wii. in my local retail store.
Seriously, we need more of these types of games. Zack a& Wiki is beautifully done, and is a blast to play.
Buy it and then get the Wii later!
Bought it and my component video switcher died, so I don't have my Wii hooked to anything. *sigh* PS2 is in the same boat with Soul Nomad...
I don't have the money for it. And it really didn't interest me. Well there was that picture with the snake and I loled.
But like I told the other kotaku writer if you give me the money to obtain the game I'd go and it.
damn you people buy this game!
I have recommended it several of my Wii owning friends who seem to dismiss the game based on the way it looks. Sad really.
Man, I've still got to get this.
Don't look at me I bought two copies, one to play and one to scalp on Ebay a few years down the road. Great game BTW, thanks to Kotaku for the heads up on this one.
I bought myself a copy after I saw the post, "BUY THIS GAME" and the game IS very fun.
It's hilarious also, I've been looking for a good point and click game since the days of Monkey Island
Most of my friends don't even know the title exists. Perhaps some better advertising and marketing for this sleeper title is in order.
It's obviously because the Wii Fanbase is too small. There just aren't enough people who own a Wii for this game to be a success.
Wait, scratch that, it's because a large majority of the Wii owners are idiots who ask questions like(quote)"Is this like a Nintendo?" or the sales clerk who responded to the question with "Yeah, it's like a Nintendo, but you can swing it, and it costs less than a Ps2" I'm not dissing all Wii owners, but so many of them are goddamn idiots.
I just bought the game tonight at my local 24 hour Wal-mart, after seeing the reviews and my friends telling me about it, I didn't see to much ads for it tho, I think that could be the problem.
Just bought the game, and it is worth recommending. Stupid name, yes, but it's one of the better motion sensitive games for the system. Had this been an earlier title, or if they bothered to put more advertising for it, I think the sales numbers would go up.
This game was sold out almost everywhere I looked. I got the last copy at the 2nd Frys I checked after running around at Target, Best Buy, etc. Maybe they would have better sales if there were more copies available.
It's not that I don't WANT to buy the game...it's that I can't find it! The 4 shame-shops, 2 Walmarts, 1 K-mart, 1 Super Target, and 1 Best Buy I went to didn't have a single copy and I've actually been looking around for it.
But I'll buy it when I can find it.
Sounds like Okami all over again....
@Vaxx: I agree, the game is a great game. It's been a long time since point-and-click has been released (largely from LucasArts). We need to show developers that this type of game can make money. *wishes for more point-and-click from LucasArts*
I just finished the game awhile back and I loved it. My 100% completion run is on hiatus for now thanks to BWii(just beat it at this very moment) and newly acquired fire emblem radiant dawn(gonna check it out now). But yeah zack and wiki seriously not designed for children's intellect I was positively stumped quite a bit during play but refused to use oracle doll(game takes away score anyway) I did use teh internetz though. But only a like 2 or 3 time as personal pride kept mocking me. My favorite stage was the one with all the paintings in the castle. Dammit, i'm all set for a sequel, pleeeeeeeease do it Capcom
In my state of poorness, this will be what I ask for for Christmas. That, and a gift card to Gamestop so I can pay off one of my many MANY preorders... and I just tacked on two more today =P
If it weren't for Kotaku, I wouldn't have known about this game. Majority of so-called gamers don't go the extra mile to gain information on new games, they sees what they wanna sees.
I've still yet to grab this. Surprise Christmas gift for me and my sister. :-p
They need to market it better. Other than word-of-mouth-over-internets or in-store recommendations, the average joe knows nothing about it! I got it, and I'm onto my 3rd area already. It's really cool but I last spent 5 lives solving a puzzle I totally knew was the right solution but was mislead 'cause my wiimote wasn't registering the correct movement enough to move something to its appropriate position and forced me to look for impossible alternatives. I thought it was a bug (which wouldn't have been a first 'cause I always find bugs in games). Grr! Oh and finding those nifty pixel treasures from old Capcom games is awesome :D Coming from a pixel pusher, they stole my heart~!
Hello Wii = kids, kids = dummies
Well I'm not going to buy it but i definitely will check it out through gamefly.
I fucking love this game, and I try to recommend it to anyone that owns a Wii.
It's because you ring a f^@*ing bell.
It's a shame that another great game is going to be pushed to the back burner of the holiday rush.
If you are a Wii owner and don't have this game, then you should lose your rights to complain about "not having anything to play". That and be shot...
Low sales of Zack and Wiki? NOOOOOO!
I hate everybody who didn't get this game.
Although yes, low shipment numbers and barely any advertising hurt.
Honestly though, I never thought I would be strapped for cash to buy Wii games. With Zack and Wiki, BWii, Fire Emblem, and Galaxy all within a period of less than a month, I'll actually have something of a backlog for a couple months.
Dear Capcom:
ADVERTISE THE DAMN GAME. ON TV.
Love,
Your fans.
Zack & Wiki ain't for europeans.. or australians...
I totally got my old roomie and my brother's gf on this game. This game is too great, what do you mean it's posting shockingly low sales? I wanna see, cuz from what I can tell, Capcom didn't even bother to make enough of them for those of us who want it!
Yea that is true; they need advertisement. I heard nothing about this game unless it was from Kotaku.
@katorok: huh?
I would only get this game because of the reviews. Nothing about it interested me. First, though, got to get a Wii. Even then, that not 'till Smash Bros. Brawl's out. Plus Metroid and Mario are next on the list. I could see this game getting pushed from my (wannabe) Wii library for a long time.
-Speaking of buying systems, I just got my God of War: CoO demo today, and will be buying my very first PSP. Soon. Anyone recommend a title to go with it?
Capcom had better drop this 'original concepts' thing and get onto the sequel gravy-train fast!
@Kirbytheslayer:
Wow, did a Wii owner drive over your cat, or something?
I guess all the PS2 owners who didn't buy Okami are 'goddamn idiots' too.
If anyone is donating games to Child's Play, this might be a good game to consider. Even though some of the puzzles can be challenging, I consider this game to be great for a family to play together. Besides, we all know the game could use a boost in sales.
If I had the money I'd get it. Capcom just released it at a bad time of the year, in my opinion. With so many games coming out on all fronts, a game like Zack and Wiki is just slipping through the cracks.
@katorok: O RLY? I've been playing games since I was four, and I went through Final Fantasy 1 when I was five or six. Not all kids are idiots.
I still need to pick this one up, hopefully In the next couple of weeks I will have it... Mostly due to a lack of being able to find it.
Hadn't paid any attention to this game due to the name and cartoon style to be honest. But looking at it now, these are the genre of games I enjoy on consoles.
(off to rent)
Pirates...challenging puzzles....Capcom!? Ok im sold :D
Yeah the puzzles are diffcult but the Challenges are what make this game so great i love the fact that capcom made the learning curve this way iam getting the most out of my Wii and the 39.99 i paid for it. Anyone who has as Wii and does not have this game is really missing out on a great game.
That sucks for Capcom. I don't know much about the game, but I like to see Capcom getting good sales numbers. It seems like no matter what console you have, you can expect to see something special from Capcom sometime in the platforms lifespan. They got me through some dark days as an early Dreamcast adapter and they have a ton of long running, quality IP's that just don't seem to get stale.
If Zach and Wiki's a thinking mans game, maybe it would have been better suited to the PS3 or 360...or PS2 even. I'm not saying that wii owners are dumb or lazy, just that a lot of wii owners are casual gamers.
I do believe that there are a number of people that ARE struggling simply to locate the game for purchase, but I think the larger grouping of folks simply aren't giving the game a chance, and it breaks my heart!
I was rather hesitant myself, but once I got going and experience the humor, gameplay and innovation, I'd pick this game over any other wii game I currently own. (And no, I don't just own Carnival Games).
Come on, folks. Try your hardest to find this soon-to-disappear gem.
everyone buy it for your wii-owning friends this xmas! This is a hidden gem if I ever owned one.
It's a great game! I've recommended it to many people who drop by my store, but a lot of the time, they're casual Wii gamers looking for "something multiplayer" or "something for my kids--I don't think they'll like that one." Many of them don't seem to get it. Railing praises and spouting review scores doesn't seem to help much, since the game is different and the name itself isn't very appealing to the average consumer. The marketing for Zack and Wiki in North America has been awfully poor. I've sold more copies of Picross and The Settlers simply because they had ads on TV. Not to say that those are bad games, but it's a story to fill you with remorse when you think about the quality of Z&W.
The same thing happened to Okami. Note to Capcom: advertise stuff to pieces and they'll sell! Great games collect dust if no one knows about them. It's sad, but true.
People who own a Wii needs to get this game. It's pure awesome!
PS:
For those of you who can't find it in stores, why not try online. I just checked and both gamestop.com and toysrus.com have it in stock.
Have at it!
Well the true reasons might elude us.
Personally I don't buy a game based on how much advertising it gets on TV or printed media, although I can't deny it sure can help to reach a more, lets say reticent audience to notice it.
Since day one (when it was first unveiled) I've been hearing great things about it from the staff of Kotaku and being that I really value their opinion and advice on games and other matters, I began to track it checking the videos, screenshots, previews, etc, that I could find.
That is how this game made it to my list, after paying careful attention to all the aforementioned details I decided that it fit well my tastes.
So that's it that's how it worked for me.
On other matters, please ignore the "trolls" and their "insights", maturity is such a seldom achieved, but much sought after status...
both Kotaku and IGN have shilled hard for this game, but that's pretty much preaching to the choir. Capcom is the one responsible for getting the word out to everyone who isn't already reading reviews for good games on the internet. bah.
zakkuuuu~!
Yes, because people who haven't played the game, or worse, not even heard of it, aren't buying it because it's too hard.
Don't worry, I'm sure insulting people who haven't heard of it due to a spectacular lack of advertising will turn around sales in a heartbeat.
Why am I so upset in every Zack and Wiki story? It could be a game I'd love, but the only word of mouth I've heard is that I'm either stupid or heartless for not wanting it. Well... how about telling me about the actual game, since Capcom won't?
