We've all got skeletons in our closet. Some are just bigger than others, and it looks like 1Up's are jumbo-sized. Jez Lezbro on his 1Up page did some digging to find out who exactly was running things over there.
A quick look around 1Up shows the site is part of mega publisher Ziff Davis Media. Further searching turns up that this publishing house was acquired by Willis Stein. Who's Willis Stein? A private equity group with three billion dollars in holdings and possible connections to political slush funds.
Sure, Jez's page hits the conspiracy angle a little too hard, but it does point out a interesting fact: even with the Internet's freedom, game publications are becoming increasingly controlled by the man. It's like when rock journalism started to become commoditized, and dudes in suits started calling the shots. We're well on our way as the establishment now owns several popular sites/blogs. I wish them the best and respect their situation, but at the same time, it's rather sad. So much of our information is controlled by the gaming industry, it's nice to have an outsider's perspective to offer a different spin. Otherwise folks, we're just regurgitating press releases.
