Asia Is the Next Hollywood ... Maybe

Or so some industry people are saying, at least in terms of Asia becoming a hotbed of gaming, development, and innovation. At least, that's what an audience at Silicon Valley's Kincon innovation conference heard last week.

"I think Asia is the new Hollywood," said Susan Choe, founder and CEO of game publisher Outspark. "It's a big statement, but who thought L.A. was going to be the center of the [entertainment world]?" Given the large number of Asian game developers that have years of experience catering to demanding consumers in hyper-connected countries like South Korea, Ms. Choe's statement might not be farfetched.

With Korean games making a quiet entry into Western markets and developers getting increasingly interested in localizing for Asian markets, the statement doesn't seem that farfetched at all. While some Western gamers like to criticize games coming out of Asia for "all looking the same" and being the same ideas rehashed over and over, the exact same can be said of a large majority of games developed for and launched in the Western market. Just like with a lot of other products, the potential gold mine of Asian markets is proving too lucrative to ignore.
