Street Fighter IV First Screenshot

2D or 3D? That's been The Street Fighter IV question that's been kicked around the internet. First details about the DIMPS developed fighter reveal that the graphics are polygonal, but the gameplay is apparently 2D. Game site 1Up (via EGM) reports that there will be new moves, locals and game play. Things that will be the same? The six button control scheme. Returning characters include Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Dhalsim. No word on who will round out the rest of the fighters, but we honestly hope that Capcom doesn't take a page out of Super Smash Bros. Brawl PR handbook and let info trickle out until release. (Though, we're actually cool with infinite Street Fighter IV spin-offs.)

What's more, we don't know which platforms the game will be on. Looking at Capcom's recent M.O., we're guessing Xbox 360/PC/PS3. And since it's a Street Fighter game, it should pop up in Japanese arcades. So, let's cut the gibble-gabble. What do you think of the first released screenshot?

  • Holy shit. That looks... pretty damn fantastic!

  • Looks good so far... love the detail.

  • This looks fucking fantastic. I seriously hope this isn't an arcade only release.

YAY! i sent this in but no love ohh well. Yeah this game looks fucking hot! its like 2d/3d cell shaded thing. I wonder if its going to be exclusive as 1up states that capcom is tight lipped but seeing how things are going as the dodo i doubt it.

  • I want to see it animated, specially those guys on the background to see how they are rendered.

    PC? Nah. Plase, not PC.

  • Well, E. Honda's dead. I saw him in the morgue on that documentary. He won't be making it in.

  • Lookin sweet so far, but when??? Prob late next yr!

  • :-O

    YES!

  • 3D characters with 2D gameplay? Staying with the traditional 6-button control scheme? To me this is wonderful news. That screenshot looks awesome btw. I had a feeling Capcom would upgrade the graphics beyond sprites, but I'm very happy with the decision to stay within 2D space. I'm now alot more excited for this game than I was 5 minutes ago. Chun-Li coming back was a given, but the return of 'Sim? Hopefully that doesn't mean the end of Necro. Can't wait for future updates.

  • Dhalism! Bring on Guile! Love the mix of 3d and 2d which doesn't look out of place.

  • Oh man bring it on

  • Anyone else noticed the snake he is hiding in his pants?

    @Wyld:

    but but but kb/m..

  • Looks like how I thought they would make it.

Though the characters in the background seem a lot smoother than the painted look of Ryu in the foreground. Seems strange to me.

  • I'm still kind of pissed that Ryu STILL doesn't look japanese.
It looks good. But i wish it was cel shaded.
Lets just hope the gameplay will make up for it.

Love it. The shading/textures give it a "handdrawn art" look to it. We demand more pictures, NOW.

  • I'm lovin the BULGE.

  • @Synced: Now that you've mentioned it I can't...not...look...

  • I'm actually a bit saddened that they don't appear to be staying with the heavily stylized look of the teaser trailer. This looks like an excellent translation of Chun-Li's SF2 stage into 3D, though, replete with hypersaturated colors and slight cell shading on the main character. Here's hoping the ultimate game keeps a lean on style.

Note there was already a 3D streetfighter. It was EX, and it wasn't very good.

  • jesus h. christ. that fucking looks good for what it is. i prefer pixels and sprites. but god damn. as long as it plays 2D i'm fine with this.

  • DIMPS? Like DBZ Budokai DIMPS?

    Shit.

  • 3D graphics, 2D gameplay? Isn't that the same formula used for PS2 3D Street Fighter? Still good, but why wasn't this foreseen instead of speculated? Too many questions!

    Hadou-can't!

  • I had so many fears that this game was going to be 3d, and I really hope the gameplay in this game sticks to 2d. We have tekken, virtua fighter, soul calibur, and dead or alive for 3d goodness, and we already know capcom can deliver the 2d fighter goodness in droves.

Although I might hold out a while until "Super Mega Street Fighter IV: Hyper Turbo HD Megamix: The new challengers" becomes the preferred version : )

  • @king_e_dawg:

I don't know where Kotaku got DIMPS from. They haven't even been mentioned at all by Capcom as far as I know. I think Capcom USA contracted Capcom's studios in Japan to handle the game.

  • @Wyld: if you dont want it on pc then dont buy it pc, dont fuck it up for people who want it on pc or those that might not have an option

  • Image of 108 108 at 02:13 AM on 12/06/07 *

everyone, fly to tokyo and go to uhhh one of the only two arcades where DIMPS' the rumble fish 2 is still in rotation, and you'll see why no one is allowed to complain about the choice of developer!

do not mention fuckin' dragon ball z budoukai or any of those games that DIMPS might have put out for money, or i will make bashcraft ban you, i'm serious. the rumble fish 2 is DIMPS' real power.

this is probably the best news of the year.

  • those are some beefy feet

  • @GalacticAE:

I recall hearing that Capcom handed over the license or development duties or something on all their fighting game properties a few years back, I think it was to Capcom USA, though.

  • Saw it coming... Looks okay but i too wish it looked a little more like the trailer...

  • Where has it been mentioned that dimps is developing this? Can someone link me.

  • I'm pretty sure this isn't in-game.

  • @king_e_dawg:
True, but according to this interview, Capcom Japan is developing the game.

  • @108: But where were they confirmed as developer? That's what I'm wondering. I feel like this may have been an error.

Too bad about TRF2 never going to make it home though. I'm never gonna get to play it. :(

  • This is a missed opportunity for Capcom. Basically if they did 2D this is their last chance to do anything with it because even the best 2D fighters (Guilty Gear for example) are just niche games that don't sell for shit and eventually get forgotten in the shadow of the big 3D ones like DOA, Tekken, Soul Cal, and Virtua. And really those 3D games all bring something different to the table (speed/precision; grappling/individual limb combat; weapons; technicality, respectively) and it would be great to add another one to that ring of great 3D fighters by bringing the old SF play into a 3D ring and add some new frills to it.

I'll still play it. But this is really the same game we've been playing for the past 20 years. At least when Zelda does it they throw in a new weapon or something every time.

  • Damn, nice art style.

  • @Duoae: Glad to see I'm not the only one, then. Those effects would have been awesome.

  • A part of me thinks this will be awesome, another part of me fears that it will be exactly like old Street Fighter with better graphics.

  • I like the fact that it's going for style as opposed to photorealism, like a lot of the 3d fighters. The shading reminds me of UDON's coloring work as well.

I just want to see the rest of the cast, perhaps older versions of earlier characters. PE Teacher Sakura would be fun to play...

  • I do miss the Bengus artwork, though. Miss it even in lieu of the awesome Udon stuff.

  • Lets be honest here, the dynamic has changed completely.

Those saying the Xbox360 can not possibly be doing well in Japan, are living in the past now.

I don't call around 50,000 copies of software in a few days, doing "badly".

Likewise, at least on two occasions the Xbox360 has even outsold the PS3- one of them when Ace Combat 6 was released.

Likewise even if Blue Dragon wasn't perfect or had a childish story, it has since sold over 260,000 copies in Japan.

Also Infinite Undiscovery and Cry On aren't the only upcoming Japanese RPGs for the system- there are others, in co-op with MS as well as tri-Ace.

Likewise, the Xbox360 has now surpassed 500,000 units in Japan which is the highest its ever gotten. To consider the lower amount of games it has as compared to say the PS2, it is doing remarkably well.

Finally, if you had not noticed I believe you should take note of this- Mistwalker *IS* Squaresoft they are the creative team behind Squaresoft.....they're no longer working with Sony, they are working with Microsoft and are doing pretty well.

Alot of ex-Squaresoft workers are in charge of Microsoft Japan now, did you know some of the scenario writers for Legend of Dragoon even joined up? The new director for MS Japan has done a fantastic job on building strong teams.

One of these teams, Sakaguchi is responsible for- Feelplus. Its made up entirely of the creators of Shadow Hearts & other RPGs. When the Shadow Hearts team disbanded, Feelplus was born.

Who do you think Square-Enix wants to work with, the slave-drivers at Sony all the time or would they rather work with Sakaguchi and the new talent in MS Japan?

The Xbox360 attach rate in Japan is 3.6, higher than the PS3 as they appear to buy many games per system.
Microsoft is determined to do very well in Japan, and they are halfway there. Sakaguchi has repeated this. Its easier to develop for & Microsoft has more sound business sense, they give alot more freedom and are getting better software on the culture side. Sony has several billion dollars, Microsoft has over 39 billion. Money talks. I think Last Remnant sales will be a measuring stick for them. I think they will start making other games, and I think Square-Enix will jump ship again, this time to Xbox at a certain time. After they have surpassed 1 million units in Japan which is attainable.

  • 2.5D sounds fine to me. No need to reinvent the wheel, when it works perfectly fine (SF EX). Now where's my saucy Chun Li pics?

  • Yup...thats a screen shot. Of a render, or a painting, or a computer graphic. But of a game? No freaking way. If a version of SF came out looking THAT good...well, I think I'd have an accident in my pants (and not the good kind of accident, mind you, I'm talking about the bad kind of accident...all stinky like).

  • What do we mean by 2d gameplay anyway? If you really think about it, even the likes of tekken, soul calibur and virtua fighter have 3d graphics with 2d gameplay...the ability to step sideways is just thrown in there, the gameplay is mostly 2d...a true 3d fighter isn't really possible, unless you use the wiimote to simulate punches...

But anyway...the screenshot rocks, now what I'd love to see is a Capcom vs SNK game with graphics like this...SNK character design is second to none! Capcom, buy SNK already!

  • why have they gone a bit Hulk-like on the legs though?

  • @king_e_dawg:
True. CMRK's art will be missed.
Maybe he'll do some of the artwork. I know he's still at capcom.

  • Woah. Looks great, only thing is I hope they keep gameplay & controls simple, im talking SF2 simple...

  • Aren't dimps the guys that make the Nintendo consoled Sonic games? They rock!

and YAY for Chun Li! Lets hope she gains other uses over her super-powered HP

  • if look you at it from the right angle, ryu is pitching a tent there. :) Now that you have noticed it, you wont be able to NOT see it. It's like a car crash!

  • Looks nice, but the raging boner is really distracting.

  • I really don't see why this game cannot go Wii-bound. Yes, it is SF. But c'mon, who says you have to use the Wiimote/nunchuk for every game? Anyway, love the first screen. Its nice to see that the game is staying in 2D, thank god!

  • @TheHeartless: You must be kidding me. Do you really think sidesteps or some shit would make SF better? Why not give SFEX3 a spin and see what you think? Just because the gameplay remains in a 2D plane doesn't mean that you can write this off as old hat. The same game we've been playing for the last 20 years? I suppose you're saying SF2 is the same as SSF2T. And that is, of course, the same as Alpha 2, which is the same as Third Strike, right? Yeah, okay.

If anything, I think this could be the smartest possible path Capcom could have taken. 3D graphics and 2D gameplay is meeting both camps in the middle. If it's executed properly, it'll play well enough to appease the 2D fans, and it'll look good enough to appeal to those who'd typically write off sprites, especially low-res ones. It's too early to tell either way, but when you come out and compare improvements made to fighting games in recent years to adding a weapon to a Zelda game, you illustrate that you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

And for the record, anyone who's ignoring all the big 2D games that are still widely played because DOA "overshadowed" them doesn't give a shit about fighting games with decent mechanics.

  • Damn, Ryu looks focused. Looking good so far, can't wait for some moving pictures.

  • I think this would look better cel-shaded, its seems more appropriate for what was once a 2D fighter... maybe.
