Sony Confirms, Details SIXAXIS Rumble

Sony Computer Entertainment today confirmed news that we first broke back at E3, rumble is indeed returning to the Playstation in the form of a SIXAXIS rumble stick.

Kaz Hirai formerly announced the DualShock 3 during his keynote Thursday morning. There will be no other changes to the outward appearance of the new controller.

The new DualShock 3 is planned to ship in Japan this November, US and Europe in Spring 2008. No price is available today, but the new controller will be on hand, playable in echochrome, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Devil May Cry 4, Toy Home, Metal Gear Online and more. In total, ten titles currently support the DualShock 3.

Hirai also said that dozens of other titles will support the DualShock 3, including just about everything going forward. It also appears some older titles might game support.

  • You add rumble to a controller that essentially already had rumble and is existant in another systems controller yet it wont come out in the US for six months, thats pleasant.

  • boo thats a last generation feature

  • "Rumble is a last gen feature" - Sony.

    Hypocrites.

  • You only miss something when its gone, the lack of rumble really buggged me with the ps3. Still its not exactly a selling point for a console, just a neat extra, thought id take it over that glithy sixaxis anyday of the week.

  • Fantastic.

Bundle it with the console and get those obsoletes SIXAXES of shelves and it's an instant buy for me.

  • @dead_red_eyes: "HDMI is unnecessary." - Microsoft

    Hypocrites.

  • @mikefreakinh:
That struck me as a bit odd, is there a language barrier with rumble? At first I thought they were "testing" it by sending it to one place, but then realized (and I mean this with no offense) that it would be Europe getting them first then. Sony loves Europe.
Neato though, guess my hands will now receive a pleasurable buzz every time I kill... bought time, without that positive reinforcement from the PS2 I could've never robbed that bank and bought my PS3!
    (got sidetracked...)

  • They should be focusing on fixing the bigger problems with the Sixaxis ... synch problems, L2/R2 buttons, ect. Rumble is nice ... but fix the damn controller already.

  • I still say the only game I truly miss rumble on is FFVIII, other than that, dont miss it at all. But it does seem a little odd games that support it will be out before the actual controller. Although I guess you have 2 options:
    1) import it from Japan and pay a little extra
    or
    2) play the game once and then add it to the replayability factor later for the second time through

  • Definitely happy rumble is coming back. When implemented well it's a great addition to a game, though I will admit that most games simply use it not as additional immersion but time it with explosions, etc. Rumble works great with games like Gran Turismo, so you can feel when you're running over onto the edge of your tires, etc.

While Sony is eating it's own words PR wise, I'm not sure why they weren't more transparent with the issue from a business standpoint. It's not that they didn't want the feature, they didn't want to deal with Immersion's bounty for it's inclusion. Ultimately, the decision whether or not to spend that amount of money was made by Sony corporate proper futher up the chain than their Playstation division. Essentially Harrison, Harai, Kutaragi's hands were tied and they had to take the situation as is.

  • RIP SIXAXIS... I never liked you anyway. Welcome home, DualShock. I missed you. I hope you brought your L2/R2 buttons with you, because I missed them too.

I'm curious, though, how does this affect the battery life of the controller?

  • Wow, they can't make a world wide launch for a controller?

  • What in the world is the logic in bringing it out in Japan first? Did they sell more units in Japan than the US?

    Retards!

  • I think that the PS3 SIXAXIS's main problem is that it is smaller than the PS2 and 360 controller and it is also way lighter. I never really enjoyed Resistance and Madden on the sixaxis becuase I thought it was way too "micro" like.

  • Amazing to read comment from people how do not own a PS3 and bashing the controler.

  • What I love about this is that when Microsoft settled with Immersion they bought a chunk of the company.
So when Sony sells one of these rumbly dualshocks they pay a royalty, part of which goes into Microsoft's pocket.

  • Will the rumble be compatible with ps2 games?

  • @GexX2:

good one! i'll have to use that!

  • @FightingChance: "Rumble works great with games like Gran Turismo, so you can feel when you're running over onto the edge of your tires, etc."

Having played ahellavulot of Forza 2 this past month, rumble is a necessity in racing games.

This is the number two announcement I was eagerly awaiting from TGS. Number one of course is the impending announcement of Team Ico's next game(s).

  • While I didn't really miss rumble, I suppose it will be nice to have it for those rare cases where developers use it to do something constructive. Having the thing bounce and wiggle every two seconds doesn't really add to the experience, you know?

Though hopefully someone will find out the reason for the at-least-four month delay. Spinning things inside of plastic doohickeys do not need localization to spin in the correct direction.

  • @XGamerX: @dead_red_eyes: @anyone else bitching "no rumble!" then when it comes back you bitch again: WAAAAAH

to everyone else: this is awesome, glad its coming back.

  • @mentalboy11: oh christ but it better be.

  • So first we have to wait almost a year for it. Now we have to wait another 6 months for it despite Japan getting it in November. Then games that are releasing in November are going to support it but we won't have it to use?

    What a failure.

  • OMG sony is very crafty they didn't put rumble into the original (six axis controller) and now there releasing a new ps3 controller with rumble so they can hype it up, get people all excited about it, feature it as new and improved and then charge waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much for it (like they dont already.

  • Spring 2008, WTF is that.

  • So, while we are developing new ideas for this groundbreaking system, how about a device that can "save" information on it! In a stick. Yea!

Its not new, but its new to you!

  • @GexX2:

Except that it IS unnecessary. The 360 can easily do 1080p without it. There is a huge difference betwen a mild convenience and an actual gameplay feature.

I honestly am pissed and diappointed by this, but not surprised. No analog fix. no trigger fix. looks like sony is just jamming some rumble engines into the same cheap ass controller we've been using for like 10 years.

Say what you will about MS., but when they redsign somehting, they actually correct its flaws. There have been 3 xbox controllers and each one was a bigger improvemtn over the last.

There have been 6 ps controllers spo far and they still haven't fixed some of the most basic problems.

  • @scratch: Japan is Sony's home. Try using logic yourself.

  • I dont get it either, why do we have to wait 6 month here in North-America? Unless its because it need to be approved by FCC first? In my opinion it would have been better to have it available for the holiday season, so when people buy PS3 and/or buy extra controller as gift it will be the rumble one. I didnt buy any extra controller since I am still waiting for the "rumble" version, it seem ill wait a while now 8-(.

  • Oh, yeah yeah. I love the rumble.

  • Spring ...

That's really fucking annoying, it's not like it's that bloody difficult to stick a vibrator motor in the damned thing.

**(Mad because I destroyed my sixaxis when it "accidentally" "slipped" from my hand and put a hole in the wall. I was planning on waiting for the rumble version to replace it, but Folklore needs motion control and I wants Folklore...)

  • @SirNirian: you sure you werent looking for joystiq?

@Marasai: its been a solid design since the SNES, the only thing to bitch about is the R2/L2 buttons if they bother you.

  • @TheIrishNinja: or maybe im just bitter that it took this long?

  • FINALLY!

wait, there's still no games out for the ps3 that i even care to play... oh well

  • This here, good friends is a prime example of the concept: Damned if you do, Damned if you don't.

Sixaxis didn't have rumble people bitch about it, it gets rumble people bitch about it, lesson here?

People bitch and complain no matter the circumstance, ignore them and do what you think best.

If Sony gets just that lesson out of the first 2 years of having the PS3 at retail then they would have profited from it all.

  • @XGamerX: oh...well, alright, ill be bitter by spring, too.

  • waiting waiting, this sucks, 08 Sony???
    you dropped the ball bigtime.

  • Well isn't that just craptacular, now I have to buy a new controller... or should I sell my controller now since Heavenly Sword isn't convincing me enough to buy any games for it yet.

Didn't Kaz or someone from Sony at one point say that the components wouldn't fit in the SIXAXIS due to the motion sensing feature? Or some excuse of that nature?

  • Awesome! Sony's got the technology that powered Pokemon Pinball back on the Gameboy Colour. I am totally stoked, you guys!

  • Six months to make a wireless PS2 controller. Wow, go Sony. With this kind of speed, I completely expect MGS4 before 2010.

  • @Marasai: The Elite didn't fix the 360's problems. And they're right. It's not necessary. It enhances the experience by giving a clearer picture, but its not necessary. Kinda like rumble. Enhances gameplay by providing tactile feedback, but its not necessary.

Don't get me wrong, I like the 360. Its got great games, and live is awesome. But Microsoft? They suck. They can't design a lasting product. Their repair service blows. They charge a fuckton for all thier accessories, and they, to me, seem like all they really want is your money.

Sony on the other hand seem to care for thier consumers a bit better. All thier accessories are appropriately priced, they don't stick you with a proprietary hard drive, they don't try to charge you for wallpaper, and their online downloads are generally well priced.

I feel as a consumer I got more value out of purchasing a PS3 than I did my 360.

I just don't see how microsoft can have this many people protecting them, wuth all thier problems, and still cause all this hate towards Sony.

  • I imagine the new dualshock's distant release date was probably calculated to give them time to unload as many of their already-manufactured SIXAXIS controllers as possible.

After all, once the Dualshock 3 arrives, any remaining SIXAXIS units are guaranteed bargain-bin bound. (At best!)

  • @Intruder

Exactly... If it's not available for the holiday season and someone still wants and extra controller then, they'll buy the regular sixaxis then and once the rumble controllers come out they'll buy ANOTHER controller thinking "Oh, you can never have too many controllers anyway" and there's a win for Sony! They just sold an extra controller that they wouldn't necessarily have sold otherwise!

  • To all the people spouting "omfg rumble is SO last gen," please just shut up.

Remember when Microsoft went and announced HDMI output for the Elite? Remember when Microsoft announced HDMI output for all 360 models? Now, remember when Microsoft said "HDMI isn't needed"?

I don't recall the boards being infested with petulant little twits exclaiming "hey guys HDMI isn't needed!!1"

  • @Inquisitor

I think the difficulty lies in obtaining a reasonable battery life.

  • @Karttikeya: Really people there are not enough of broken blue ray diodes to make shock pads for all! World wide launch is for next gen. This gen you get stuff when they want you to have it! Kaz runs thing now you see! If you don't like it then go kick a can!

j/k So is this suppose to keep people from buying halo 3? Just wondering?

  • @Marasai: The PS controllers have never needed redesigning. They're comfortable (except the trigger buttons on the sixaxis) and I, like millions of others, wouldn't want them to change the controller. The analogue sticks are fine at different heights, because believe it or not, you use with separate thumbs, presumably on two independent arms so that has just never made any sense.

  • @Lou3000:

    :|

Sony has no say in when MGS4 gets released. It's a Konami game.

  • @Violater: clearly there where no other balls to drop for sony. Home got some good news too... yeah you get to wear cool shirts now! Come on man!

  • A God there is, finally!!! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go cry my joyful tears...

  • but how will rumble and weak motion control mix? time to see ome dragons in lair spazzing out.

  • hypocrites.

  • The left thumbstick needs to be moved up.

  • @last_dread:

I suppose a patch is technically possible, but I doubt very many already-released titles will retroactively employ rumble.

  • such a long wait...

  • @TonyRockyHorror:

    Who're the hypocrites?!

Surely the people who ragged on Sony for removing rumble and now berate them for putting it back in...

  • Sony sucks, MS sucks, but Nintendo sh**s itself while sucking. Current Technology FTW.

Now if someone has a hack to make a 360 controller work with the PS3 I will buy one...well it would be more of a mod but still.

  • @TonyRockyHorror: im with henrytownshend here; surely you mean the people who're bitching about this now.

  • @TheNocturnalSun:

If it's any consolation, MGS4 is probably the only game that'll make good use of it... and that's not due out 'til spring.
