Kaz Hirai today announced that Sony Computer Entertainment is delaying the release of the Playstation Home until the spring of 2008. He told reporters that the team wanted to spend more time developing the user interface platform.
Hirai went on to apologize for the delay, insisting that the service must spend more time in development so gamers around the world can experience the game when it is ready.

Dammit I wanted to run up and dance in front of unsuspecting womens while wearing Lombax ears...
But this delay sounds about right. From the sounds of it, Home is still only half finished. The waiting game continues I suppose.
damn... :(
Hopefully this will mean all the features they have been showing at presentations will come already in the spring 08 version.
thats not too shocking but from the sound of the previews it needed it. Spring 2008 is going to be quite busy for the ps3.
Lame!!
Still as per expected from $ony.
Again, shoulda seen this coming, with all the "youll not be getting a complete version in october..." talk.
on one hand, it needs to live up to what they sold at GDC earlier; on the other, the launching games from within & such is really needed.
if there's no XMB access in game soon, theyre really dropping the ball here.
not for me. :)
Why??!!! POR QUE!
After playing the Team Fortress two beta for seven hours straight, I think I'll cope with one having one less thing to do. Obviously this isn't a thing to be celebrating, but hey could be worse is all I'm saying.
1 - Home will be better
2 - Beta will probably expand a little, still a chance
3 - Fall is so loaded, I honestly would never get on Home (except for joining friends in game, which is my big complaint)
Good Job Sony, taking care of the bad news first, now... overwhelm me with awesome! Or forever (read: day or two) be cursed by me!
I'm more inerested in when the open beta will start rolling out and how many people will have access to it. I could care less if the final version is delayed if I a bunch of people (like the gmail reference they keep making) get the beta.
Aww. Why not just release the limited beta they have now to everyone and declare it as such. I would be happy enough with that.
yet another title recieves the delay hammer ; ; WHY SONY WHY ; ;....
on a serious note.. i'm really pissed :/
on a positive note, Firmware 2.0 for the ps3 won't be the home download...so We shoudl get our... * crosses fingers * in game XMB access?! Most likely in response to halo 3?!....
God damnit sony..... i have faith in the PS3...but.. your wasting so much potential...
oh and kagebutsu, I'll save you some time:
Sucky Home gets sucky delayed on sucky console.
Yes.. yes.. you are that predictable.
*Keep in mind, not my thoughts, but instead reflects that of a 5 year olds.
not much of surprise. i'd rather have a well crafted product than a piece of crap that they just threw out to meet a deadline.
@Kirbytheslayer:
you wouldnt want that.
they are probably also adding in some functionality with the rumble sixaxis?
I really wish they'd stop pouring resources into this one. I don't want to hang out with people in a virtual mall, or show people my virtual mansion. I want to play games, not interact with the other gamers or just "hang out" and watch people do their ridiculous animation dances. Oh look, that guy is farting and dancing a jig. So glad I came into this room.
Maybe it's an age thing, but I just want games.
@fawstur: heh. like "shake the controller to wave at friends?"
Homeless till 08, christ what a disappointment, hmmm not really. But it still sucks.
@Citan359:
Smart kid, I'd like to buy him a beer!
@Troyd:
so sony's response to Halo 3 is an update to give the ps3 features the 360 had over 2 years ago?
you know...id better have trophies/knock-off achievements and shit when it comes out.
I'm all for it. The way Home is right now makes me want to go outside.
@Marasai: hah, was waiting for someone to call out on that one.
Booooooo! But totally expected and unsurprising. *sigh*
I am still disappointed with no new games being announced and now HOME is being delayed..What happen to 8 days or getaway and the new team ico game!!The only great news is rumble coming back and MGS4,Uncharted, ratchet and other games will be supporting it..
@TheIrishNinja: You'll feel a rumble if they wave back at you! =D
But oh God am I pissed off at this. My friend is seriously in a state of sorrow right now.
But hey, it could be worse, ya know? Like as if Home gets... actually, I wont finish that sentence. I'd rather not jinx it.
@ Marasai: lol true enough, its just a rumor....and well XMB access is something we all want.
@TheIrishNinja: Donkey punch? oh its not "that" kind of home. I dunno...body language? Dancing? I dunno know what I was going for there. maybe the functionality is to grasp at straws?
Well, remember that sony always talks a lot with games and release dates, dont you remember that they said that the ps3 was going to be released in spring of 2006, so i think that they want to polish many aspects of the game, so wait a little longer, anyway if you wait you may get a cheaper ps3 by then...
GAAAAY
@skyzxelementz: TGS isnt over, by the way.
This is good news. It can only get better :)
Asside from the few "hardcore" that want home in its unfinished state, The general user would try it see it's buggy or something and never come back which defeats the purpose of having hame to begin with.
Im all for finished products or constant updating, but beta to be released to the masses is a bad idea.
You can always hope for being a beta tester.
I'm a Hardcore 360 fan, and I can admit that this is cool, only issue I have is it'd much rather be playing games of Halo 3, or Conan etc than be hanging out in my house. Though this does look neat, I just don't think I'd spend that much time there.
@Marasai: That has to be the stupidest/funniest thing I have read all week.
Sory I ment Troyd :p
And now I officially care less about my PS3 this coming fall. I need furniture achievements. Being an achievement whore, I'm not too fond of playing achievementless games anymore.
motherfuckin bullshit! i fuckin knew it! damn!
Anyone surprised?
Here is a hint, expect Q2, maybe even early Q3 from what I'm hearing.
And still, A second life clone isn't enough to get me, or most gamers a PS3
Why am I not surprised. The question now is will I care for Home in '08?
Do I get points for predicting this back during the E3 betting pool?
shit! Was looking forward to pimpin out my apartment.
WHO CARES? What, do they think this is a system seller? What a joke. Really, who cares? who?
Chad Daddy ain't tryin' to play no Home-o stickin' it up your ass games
@BodyOfTheMany: The same guys who think that folding proteins is awesome.
@BodyOfTheMany: Thats a stupid question, I can't believe you just asked that! Get out, just... just get out!
This is bad in so many ways. Home was one of the only things I was looking forward to on the PS3 this holiday season. Now all I'm left with is Uncharted (if it makes it out on time). If the update prior to this one didn't announce rumble, I'd throw my six-axis across the room and give up on Sony completely. But rumble? That's the one thing (as far as the controller is concerned) Sony did right. The Dualshock had the best rumble on the market. Still does. So this bad (predictable -- what hasn't been delayed on the PS3?) news is made a little more comfy knowing a new controller is on its way. One that rumbles. Like a controller should. But how will Sony explain away the, "Rumble is last-gen" comments they made?
There is no reason to buy a PS3 until 2009. Sony rushed to market with no games, no platform, and almost non-existent 3rd party support.
one of the smartest thing they did, in a looooong time.
@pjarvi:
No games, damn I wonder what I've been playing all this time? This fall/Winter is pretty big as well as spring 08 so waiting until 09 might be a bit too long.
Sony's 3rd party support is rapidly improving; Epic, Criterion, EA-all future titles at 60, Free Radical, etc. This keynote also mentioned making it better.
"Kaz wants to clear issues for developers working on PS3, and says Sony will assist on marketing too. He wants a "much closer relationship" with partners, and offers the Crisis Core PSP Slim Square Enix collaboration as an example of that in action already.
Some of these collaborative endeavours are going on behind the scenes already, he says, largely in terms of development assistance courtesy of Sony Worldwide Studios. Sony is trying to listen to opinions of developers whose games are already out, he says
Periodical dev meetings of the advisory board will help with that, he says, and Sony is also implementing "various plans to improve development efficiencies".
One thing Sony will do is share the SN Systems tool chain, having acquired the company a while back."
He also spoke of improving 1st party title development.
@bobeotm: Yup, if the delay is needed to get Home working as it should I'm all for it.
