With these blue diode yields sucking as badly as they do I have to wonder if this was a good time to start a format war. Maybe we need a HD solution that uses some more friendly color of the spectrum ... is there one?

You know when the DVD specifications were being determined and it basically came down to Sony (and Philips I believe) vs. Toshiba (and friends) everyone decided to hold a big conference to set standards and avoid a costly format war (eventually settling on Toshiba's standard).

I have to wonder why Sony wants to get into the expensive fight this time? Could it be because it is about selling consoles and not formats? Seems like this could be the case where the current state of the format war seems to be XBox 360 vs. PLAYSTATION 3.

Well Zero, both the HD-DVD and BR use the same laser diode. So they are both going to feel the pinch. Sony will have the advantage due to the fact people will just buy the PS3 regardless of what fanboys claim wont happen.

That will give it a leg up it needs. And both didnt come to an agreement, as I recall it was Toshiba's end that kept calling off the talks in aggrevation. Maybe they are pissed cause they wanted this generation their way, like it was last with the DVD. Either way, if one or both fail, the PS3 will still be there.

Yeah, it's fun to predict all the gloom and doom, but when the product is on the shelves what did it matter how hard it was for Sony to build it? Absolutely nothing. Even if they fail to produce half of the units they aim to, they are on the same line that Microsoft was year ago.
