The Gooch Hints At Another Blue Dragon

bluedragonpromotion.jpg

What. A. Shock. Microsoft and Mistwalker are apparently in talks about another Blue Dragon game. To date, the RPG is the biggest selling Xbox 360 title in Japan. While at a press conference in Seoul to promote the Korean release, game creator Hironobu Sakaguchi says he's chatting with Microsoft to do a Blue Dragon sequel and mentions the possibility of it being an "online game." During the symposium, The Gooch stressed the importance of online for gaming's future. Whether or not the next Blue Dragon will take advantage of that, well, wait and see.

  • 360 trying to convince Japan they can make RPG's = LAFF

  • Apparently it was a good RPG so stooofoo!

  • I want a try it :)

  • Blue Dragon X360 Microsoft
    139,182

I hardly call that a successful RPG in Japan....

Kingdom Hearts II : Final Mix + sold 230,000 in 3 weeks for the PS2....

  • I guarantee if they port this to the PS3 it will sell 500K easy. Don't get me wrong, it is a wonderful looking game made by 3 genius in the RPG Genre, but putting this out in Japan first on 360 was a major mistake.

  • Considering it's a Xbox 360 game, anything above 50k is considered a decent success over in Japan.

I plan on waiting to personally play Blue Dragon before I form any opinion on its sequel, or the idea of one for that matter.

  • Oh boy, you had better stop saying Gooch.

    Gooch . . . hehe!

In terms of the actual news, this can only be good. Let's hope that the *first* game does well in the US before we wet our collective pants over the next one, though.

Ashcraft that picture makes my eyes bleed. D:

  • @consolecrusader:

I think the reason is Sakaguchi doesn't really want to compete with the Final Fantasy series and DQ series. He has a better shot at getting his games noticed on the 360 than on the PS3. And I think MS is the publisher of MistWalker's games for the US.

This game has TONS of mixed-reviews. I want to try it out for myself. An editor for EGM/1UP (Ok it's the Milkman) had a guest for Famitsu over his place. The Famitsu editor was playing Blue Dragon for reviewing purposes. Let's just say he wasn't replacing Final Fantasy with this anytime soon. (though he did concede that he was going to give this an 8 or something because he's friends with Sakaguchi I think).

  • is that chick even real?

  • I thought Gooch was slang for "taint"

  • is there a release date for USA?

  • @excaliburps: Odd, as I recall Famitsu gave the game three nines and a ten.

  • @Luziphir:

Really? Damn! It's higher than I thought! The editor was complaining about the pacing. Things that should've been grandiose was not etc.

Milkman was actually intrigued by the whole "give my friend a good score so as not to offend him/her"

I know this thing is pretty common here in Asia. Is it the same or as rampant in the US? (not implying that the game rags/sites are paid off but you all get my drift).

  • @Witzbold:
She seems very surprised by this Blue Dragon news!

  • Oh I found the link here it is (for anyone interested)

I was wrong. The editor was friends with the creative director. It's a good read nonetheless.

But I still want to try it for myself.

    @ashcraft: XD

Im curious if the Blue Dragon anime will cause more "kids" to bug their parents into buying an X360 for them. Since thats whats on the air right now.

Even though the story is totally different...

  • @consolecrusader:

Yeah, that game was slathered with Final Fantasy and Disney characters. This is not.

@Bonzo: It is. I'm not familiar with this Sakaguchi character, so it's a mystery to me why Ashcraft would want to associate him with the region between one's genitals and anus.

Whatever the reason, it's still really freaking funny.

  • Screw JRPG's, give me a CRPG anyday!

That being said, there is a serious lack of CRPG's. Which makes me sad.

  • Don't be decieved! That is a plastic mannequin with soul-sucking voids for eyes!

  • @consolecrusader: your a funny lil cow aren't you not only was it never said it was the biggest selling rpg in japan, or the most successful, It only said it was the biggest selling 360 rpg...Which is something pretty amazing, since xbox did crap there last gen, and 360 is only doing a lil better, and the game sold alot for an xbox game.

  • Glad to see Sakaguchi further persuing his online/mmo ideas since mentioning it at GDC. That got me very excited.

  • @vongarr:

CRPG? Canadian RPG? Isn't Bioware up there?

*attempted to come up with some joke involving either mounties or ham mislabeled as bacon, I failed miserably*

  • This is great news really, ive had the game since launch here and spent well over 200 hours on it. Personally I rank it far higher than anything Square-Enix has put out in around 6-7 years.

As for it being a success, I think its pretty successful as selling 200k or more units on a console who's base is almost nothing is definantly good. Compare the installed base vs purchase percentage for any game on any console and I think youll find that blue dragons is among the highest.

As for it being a mistake, I disagree. The PS3 really isnt selling all that great here and although its certianly better in the numbers than the 360, I honestly think its riding on the the backward compatibility feature.(I also have a PS3 just for the record.)Going to the store day after day just leaves me disappointed with sony. Putting it on the PS3 surely would have sold a bit, but why bother is the real question. Why is it that people automatically assume that all rpg fans will buy a PS3 just because the PS2 was the console of choice?

In anycase, I only see the possibility of a sequal as good news. As well as if it has online, then having it on the 360 is even better. Not to sure how I feel about having a blue dragon mmo though. That would be a bit odd I think.

  • @WilliamRLBaker: Wait, is 360 doing better than original Xbox? Certainly in the year post-launch it was doing worse, but perhaps that has now changed - what are the figures? (I honestly don't know - but unless you do know for certain, I'd stop making that claim.)

  • @WilliamRLBaker:

Seriously why are you even trying to argue with me. SO it was best selling RPG in Japan...you mean ONLY RPG in Japan. Come on man Japan 360 releases is never anything to get ga ga over.
