At BlizzCon today, representatives from Blizzard and Legendary Pictures hosted a panel on the upcoming WarCraft film adaptation, giving attendees an update on the film's progress and addressing fan concerns with a follow-up Q&A session. On hand were Paul Sams and Chris Metzen Blizzard Entertainment and, from Legendary Pictures, CEO Thomas Tull and Chief Creative Officer Jon Jashni. In addition to confirming that the Warcraft movie will be a live action film, with a yet to be determined level of computer generated environments and effects, Jashni told the crowd they're still working toward a 2009 release date.
Sams, Metzen and Jashni made it a regular point to express their wishes to "not... create another video game movie" but to "create an epic." And while some fans may have taken pause at Jashni's reasoning that "we can't just make a movie for the 9 million World of Warcraft subscribers", it was clear that all four were passionate about bringing the mythology of Warcraft to the big screen as faithfully as possible.
The panel invoked the name of Legendary Pictures' recent hits Batman Begins and 300 as indicative of the quality of the $100 million-plus feature film. They also dropped names like Braveheart and the Lord of the Rings trilogy when discussing their vision for the Warcraft movie's action scenes.

For how intense those scenes will be, and what rating they're shooting for, Metzen said "It's hard for us to predict what happens. You want to not compromise and you want to have the intensity." Addressing concerns over a Nerfed fantasy war movie, he explained, "The story and the director's vision will ultimately decide that. We're definitely not going to make a G or a PG version of this. It's not PillowfightCraft."
Warcraft is still in the scripting process, but Metzen reported that they have something that they're happy with. The plot was kept under wraps but Metzen told the crowd it would take place about a year before the events of World of Warcraft.
The storyline is "principally told from the Alliance perspective." After revealing that detail, and waiting for the Horde aligned players to finish their booing, Metzen explained "While my heart lies with the Horde and Thrall's an interesting character, from a movie making standpoint, a blockbuster movie its a little rough to try and tell it from the perspective of this green looking dude."
"What about Shrek?!" a Blizzconner yelled. A busted Metzen quipped "Shrek's a good example. For a kids comedy."

According to Jashni, no director has been attached. "We are starting those conversations. We're going to be looking for someone of [300 director Zak Snyder or Batman Begins director Chris Nolan's] caliber," said Metzen. They snickered at a crowd member's suggestion for Uwe Boll, commenting only on the infamous director's recent boxing match.
With no director comes no casting news. That process hasn't been started yet, but when asked about whether they'd be looking for "big name Hollywood actors" or "fresher faces", Jashni played coy, only saying that "because there's a lot of interest in Warcraft, we've gotten a lot of interesting phone calls."
Following another fan suggestion, Metzen says they haven't yet contacted Chuck Norris for a role or cameo.
Jashni then recounted a story that involved Superman Returns star Brandon Routh accosting him upon hearing of his involvement with Blizzard, with Routh asking "Do you know the Warcraft guys?! Can you get me a tour of [their office]?"
By the end of the panel, we hadn't learned much in the way of concrete details, as much of the film is simply too early in production to talk about. As a sort of apology for being so vague, panel speakers showed one of the first pieces of concept artwork for the film.

Anyone recognize it?

Hrm, is that the destroyed world tree or whatever (with the end of Warcraft III)?
Nah it's the other tree with all those night elves living on it. I think that because it looks like an island.
I wonder if this will be another Lords of the Rings situation for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the movies but to this day, have never played any of the games. So as a Non-Warcraft player, I wonder if I will be able to enjoy this movie as a newcomer into the "world" of Warcraft or will this movie be for the meticulously hardcore fans of the game who already understand the world, story, and it's characters.
Ugh,this is about as appealing to me as Bolls Dungeon Siege movie....
ok maybe that was a bit too far,but still i see nothing but a LOTRs knock off for this film.
this franchise isn't being milked
I don't know...I'd need to see some footage before I'd really get an opinion of it...
here's hoping for a leroy jenkins cameo.
I'm somewhat hoping this smashes WoW. At least a little. >___>;;
I want some friends lives back please. ;-;
Let's bet that it follows Malfurion Stormrage.
They should just fraps a Molten Core raid and show that off.
probably will suck
@Roflcopter444: Six hours of pulling molten giants and core hound packs. Then can split it up into a trilogy!
Well, that they stated the movie would be live action instantly changed my outlook from "hopeful" to "dismal".
You know what needs to be done? A Contra movie. A Contra movie would break all previous videogame movie curses because the only way it would fail would be if it wasn't cheesy. It would be the action movie to end all action movies.
Remember the scene in Contra 3 when you jump from missile to missile shooting the level 4 boss? Maybe it makes no real sense, but it would be like liquid gold sex on screen.
Spread gun? Oh yeah, mmmbaby! And another look at Contra 3 shows us that you actually hold 2 guns.
2 M16's with spread gun modifiers = smex.
Like half the movie would be CG, but it would look awesome.
I will not rest until this movie is made!!
*yawn* I am getting a bit tired, though.
"They also dropped names like Braveheard and Lord of the Rings when discussing their vision for the Warcraft movie's action scenes."
Sorry to be a prick,but wasnt it braveheart
Also, a Contra movie would be an adaption of the most "American" game ever created and would bring us all together with its rabid patriotic feel... Okay, I don't know if they are American, but they'll be American in the movie...
Oh, and the success of this movie will usher in a new age of the 80's "badass" hero type, replacing all of today's prettyboys with explosions- lots of explosions.
Teldrassil; not Nordrassil I figure.
Best game movie ever would easily be metal gear solid - has oodles of style and substance, would win over action fans and them arty farty types who want their movies to be profound and meaningful - "a meditation on the human condition"...or something...
I'd have christian bale play snake...perfect fit if you ask me...
@zany_ninja: I would prefer Contra, but MGS is a cool idea... Who would play Raiden? I'm seeing Leonardo Decaprio. Pretty enough to play Raiden, manly enough to use a sword.
Continuing with the metal gear move...I'd have Mark Wahlberg as Revolver Ocelot...Justin Long as Otacon...
...
You may argue with my selection, but you have to admit, its waaaay better than having that baby face goo-goo eyes weird shaped head Olyphant as Agent 47....sheesh, he looks like he's str8 out of the rugrats cartoon...
@Gamemaster: DiCaprio as Raiden could work, he was awesome in Blood Diamond...But i wouldn't have the Raiden of Metal Gear 2, but the Raiden of MGS 4 instead :) Dicaprio as the cyborg ninja! :)
Lord of teh Rings knock off or not, i need more orcs. Or epic battles involving orcs.
And Legendary pictures put out Batman Begins so not all bad.
But still, orc battles = awsomeness.
Josh Halloway would make the perfect Solid Snake. (Sawyer from LOST)
I admire Christian Bale, one of the best actors around, but he ain't no Snake.
Is Thomas Tull related to Jethro Tull?
I bet he gets that all the time - it may be cool to say you worked on Warcraft, but it's even cooler to be able to say your ancestor invented an improved horse-drawn plow AND had a 70's prog-rock band named after him.
But I digress...
Orcs are always cool. And the orcs in the warcraft series aren't just... "gwarr you human, me eat you". They can actually talk and stuff. <_< Oh well, guess they'll end up being evil or something.
I'd prefer their 100 million to go into a new game, but oh well. As long as it doesn't turn out to be the next FF:The Spirits Within, then Blizzard is good.
I am confident this movie will not suck.
@MetaKz: The problem with Spirits Within is that the fans of the series shunned it because of it's Sci-Fi backdrop and fans of Sci-Fi shunned it because of it's mythological story and themes. It's a decent film with phenomenal voice acting and a subtly beautiful pace. Not to mention, the CG still holds up today, so for 2001 it was phenomenal. I can see how it flopped at the box office though.
Why do people spend so much money on these films... The more money you spend the more your movie has to sell to make a profit.. Make a anime for around 9 million-20mil and try to make a 100million dollar profit.
@MetaKz: And, sorry about the double post, but Spirits Within was pretty damn good.
@NotSoCool: Yes it was :)
@Samaridino: Doh! Thanks for the heads up. Typing is hard.
You can easilly make a game that sucks and have it be succesful due to masses just playing because of the other masses, movies on the other hand....
Live action?
Maybe Blizzard is trying to buy into the mainstream with this...
I would have preferred CGI rendering.
They'll release a Warcraft movie, yet Halo can't even get funding?
Screw another fantasy movie. LOTR filled me with enough fantasy to last a lifetime. Gimme my sci-fi fix now!
It's the Mana Tree! :P
I was kinda hoping the entire movie would be made using the WoW game engine, like "Make Love Not Warcraft".
What... World of Whorecraft was not enough for the teeming masses?
Will Chuck Norris be in it?
@friscom99: No, but he shall be in the Contra movie for sure. In fact, just retcon over half the story- Chuck is the main character!!
@JAcK0R:
Whats the story behind Halo ? Besides big guns.
@Tisteldun: Are you kidding? The Halo universe is chalk full of mythology and excellent cinematic themes.
I mean the series has only spawned... what, 4 or 5 novels.
The Halo universe, while compellingly portrayed and acted, is wholeheartedly unoriginal.
The "Reclaimer" has to go to the "Ark" where the "Forerunners" hid from the "Flood".
It's always been a huge religious parable with enough gunplay to distract from the heavy-handed mythologizing. Still, an eminently film-able franchise, though the art-style plagarism from Alien would probably require tweaking.
Metal Gear Solid, though, that's practically a movie already, you just need to trim the script a bit and put it to film.
As long as this is a Warcraft movie and not a World of Warcraft movie.
A WoW movie simply can't do well, cause no one's going to see it.
why you ask?
because WoW players live in basements and almost never leave their lair.
@frank0127:
Well they obviously leave to guy buy WoW and attend a convention (basically) FOR WoW so im sure they will get up a third time to go see a WoW movie.
Meh, they have the best 3D animation artists in western game industry and go for live action... I guess FF Spirits Within didn't inspire them to try full 3D film, eh?
@andregalan:
"Just have to trim the script a bit"
You made me LOLs.
Blizzard spends $100 million on a Warcraft movie.
Joe and Jane Public doesn't understand the art that is Warcraft.
WoW players hated the movie because they sold out to the mainstream (dumbass WoWers).
Movie tanks.
Joe and Jane Public tries out WoW after watching a divx copy downloaded by J1nx3r Public (of Mannoroth).
WoW servers explodes from the surge of noobs.
Massive numbers of WoW players jumped of buildings from chronic withdrawals (rez plz kthx).
Parents sues Blizzard.
Blizzard in huge debt.
Legendary Pictures buys out Blizzard.
??????
PROFIT!
@arashi:
Well making a full 3D feature film production is something that takes 3 to 4 years. I am guessing they want to release the film prior to that. Also, developing 3D and animation for a game is much different than developing it for a film. The Blizzard cinematics are simply inspiring, but they also use alot of short cuts that might not cut it in a feature film. the pipelines for each are completely different. I am sure the artists there have enough talent, but it might be biting off more than Blizzard crew could chew.
@Samaridino: 6 hours of people walking to a volcano? I'm pretty sure it'll be better than that...
Alliance POV eh? I knew blizzard was biased!!!
Looks like the virgin mary?
