At this weekend's BlizzCon, tabletop game specialist Fantasy Flight Games showed the first prototypes for its upcoming StarCraft: The Board Game set. At $79.95, the six-player board game may seem a tad on the pricey side, but when you consider the set includes 180 plastic play figures, based on 25 unique sculpts from StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War, dozens of cards and tokens, and just tons of other stuff, you can see where the money went.
While the rules are far too complicated to grasp at BlizzCon, the board game, which is scheduled to ship in September, looks like a solid investment for strategic tabletop gaming fans. At the very least, it will give StarCraft diehards who aren't blessed with the finger speed of professional Korean gamers something to do when the electricity goes out. I know I'm getting a copy for my fallout shelter.
According to Fantasy Flight reps, attendees of GenCon will have an opportunity to get their hands on a copy of the game a bit earlier than the rest of the gaming public. And, yes, a sequel is already planned to include units from StarCraft II.

My friend has the WoW board game, and I must say that one's more fun than I thought it'd be. Could see this being a neat game.
I dunno... doesn't anyone just play monopoly anymore?
so who prints more money you guys think? Nintendo or Blizzard?
Im rather interested in seeing how this game plays.
@Krytha: Monopoly is not very good compared to modern "enthusiast" board games.
If that game doesn't have a "Mass Carriers = Instant Win Card," it immediately fails.
I still prefer a good game of Warmachine or Warhammer 40k over this. [www.privateerpress.com]

Just looking at that picture scares the bejesus out of me. What is that? About 1000 pieces (plastic, cards, etc) total? Maybe they should call it "Enormous Learning Curve: The Board Game".
Maybe I'll give it a shot when they come out with "StarCraft: The Board Game: The Videogame".
> At $79.95, the six-player board game may seem a tad on the pricey side
Anyone who complains about the price isn't a real board game player! 4-player Catan with all expansions costs over $90 (usually $30-40 per box, 3 boxes total).
Any word on what the rules are? The website link is pretty bare.
This looks like it will be fun. Like DRAGOONKIN said, the WoW game was a big surprise for me. If it can be set up an played in less than 2 hours, I'm there.
@BigChiefSmokem: so who prints more money you guys think? Nintendo or Blizzard?
Yes.
@Veltis:
I played 40k about 15 years ago. I don't have time to spend a whole day playing games anymore. Good times, though.
fantasy flight games makes some fantastic games, though. I'd highly recommend Arkham Horror to anyone remotely interested in Cthulhu or any of HP Lovecraft's stories. It's basically everyone against the game, and, well, lets just put it this way: The chances of you winning are slim.
Yup, its fantasy flight games. They love to make massive sized board games which are extremely high quality. Their WOW board game is similar and pretty darn good. Starcraft should be good, they have a good track record.
Though at its price, these are not normal board games, these are games for the hardcore gamers.
@AGiES:
By "not very good" do you mean "actually palatable to girlfriends and non-engineers, and a wonderful show of the glory of well-crafted simplicity"? Because that seems a bit more accurate.
@Terinije: at a decent level of competition, its pretty hard to pull off a "mass carriers" :P its probably still a viable tactic in BGH or other stupid maps though...
@Keen314: Catan is a blast to play, no doubt, but you don't have to plunk down the $90 all in one shot. I'm sure the board game is fun and all, I just don't think I can justify that much money on a game where I *might* get people to play. One indisputable advantage of a video game over board games: single player mode.
180 plastic play figures? That's insane!
They should've kept it at a halfway manageable size, that would've kept down the vicious prize as well.
@BigChiefSmokem: No question, Blizzard. $15x9,000,000 each month. Compare that to $100x10,000,000 total.
Of course, the best part is the guy who actually created the game:
[link.brightcove.com]
@MajoShinpan: You don't use all the figures at once. And most of the figures are there so multiple players can play the game.
@StrikerGold: Well when you play a board game, its obviously a social experience. I got tons of these huge games mainly because got a core group of friends who all like to play the games so we always have game nights.
Loser cleans up.
for me to spend some green on that i need to see how its played and see if its fun, the last board game i was addicted to back then was Risk! damn that game took so much time to finish lol =p
@mercatfat: Try Carcassonnes. It has no pieces but little wooden men, and square tiles. And a scoreboard.
It takes less time than Monopoly to learn, but the intricacies are amazing.
"Draw tile. Place tile in valid location. Place Follower in valid location on tile if you desire. Determine any scoring."
That's the whole turn sequence.
I was just hoping they would come out with a Starcraft Trading Card Game
Have like the Deck be your Nexus CC or Lair and you can deploy defence cards to protect your base and then unit cards for offence.
i would play it.
I love this upsurge in board games. Catan + Carcassonne on XBLive, WoW board game, Starcraft boardgame in time for XMas.
I've been totally watching and promoting this game at my stores. ([www.gameniteshop.com]) This game is shaping up well and FFG has been doing a great job lately, especially with Tides of Iron.
If you live in the St.L area and ever want to get a board game in against me, come by SoCo on a Saturday.
Wait, a Starcraft board game?
There's a really good joke to be had here, I just know it. ;)
Just as long as they don't milk this into oblivion like WOW. Starcraft CCG? Coming soon to a store near you, along with Starcraft hats. Starcraft shirts and patches in your Hot Topic. Starcraft Protoss arms and guns and toys. Protoss limited edition models. SC Expansion pack for the CCG, Zerg Rush(keke). I can see it now, and I hate it. Can this be the last, Blizzard? I'd much prefer my Ghost now.
@Krytha:
I still like Monopoly. :(
@Jazhuis: My thoughts exactly.
Also, unless you can zerg rush this isn't Starcraft, in my opinion.
@Dragoonkin: Love Carcassonne. I'm a recent convert to Catan as well.
Well, most of the Blizz people I talked to seemed to like it quite a bit. Its very orientated on attacking. And yes, you can zerg rush. There's some mechanic where the Zerg get double the amount of buildings or something like that.
Considering those "figures" everything else in that box comes from some sweatshop in China, I don't know where the money went.
@Jazhuis: Sadly you will still find people thinking that Gamesworkshop stole Blizzard ideas ; ; .
Will the board game include play types such as "15 MIN NO RUSH" or "NO NOOBS"?
but, can you scv rush?
@emartel:
SC has been out for 10 years and I'm surprised people STILL don't get the joke.
@Robert Summa: I don't understand why fairly successful geeks won't go to a stylist and stop wearing the haircut mom gave them back in grade 3.
@strictlybogart: or 4drone?
@Hagglegaggle: is it okay if your mom went to beauty school?
....not that she still cuts my hair >.>
@TheJordanator: Depends on whether or not she gave you a perm, I suppose.
So, you're saying that Korean gamers with lighting-fast reflexes have something else to do when the power goes out? Pray, tell what these wonder people may do!
I, personally, am helpless without the intertron.
@Torokun: FFG hires very talented artists, much of their games are beautifully illustrated. Plus these games take long time to produce. Unlike some shitty Milton Bradely board game you will find at Toy R Us, these types of board games are heavily tested over long periods of time for playability, balance, and other factors. Don't mention that these games they make often way A LOT. The large boxes and all the stuff in the box makes their games very heavy, which in turn equals expensive shipping and handling costs. Their figures are generally high quality as well, from well payed sculptors.
Again this is not Milton Bradley or some other cheesy cheap board game company, Fantasy Flight makes some of the most quality products on the market.
@Hagglegaggle: What if my perm looks like Justin Timberlake's during his N*Sync years?
I'm not much for board games, but this looks like a sure-fire winner.
Except if I get Zerg-rushed, then I'll throw the game board and run away.
The one thing that makes me sad, is that box looks actually bigger than a PS3 box.
Im gonna hate having to bring that thing around to a mates house to play if I ever decide on picking it up. :/
I'd rather play Warhammer 40k.
Then again, $70 just barely gets you two dreadnoughts.
Think Dragoons, but more kickass, with chainguns and power claws, and with a cooler Earthican architectural style.
I'm a Tau man myself. Can't resist those Fire Warriors with Railguns.
@RPharazon: I like the style of Tau if it's painted well, but they suck at close combat.
Grey Knights FTW.
@RPharazon: Dont forget the cost of paint and the other "supplies" necessary to make them look nice. ;D
Dear god, I blame paiting the tiny figures for one of the reasons why I went semi blind while growing up.
Always hated it when a base color I needed was sold out too, since it would take forever to get a new shipment in.
board games are on life support as it is, a better use of their concept is to promote it as a PC game "demo" made to hype up starcraft 2, if thats even needed(heck it would give SC fans something to do untill the release anyways)
Board games are certainly not on life support. And all the Videogame-to-boardgame adaptations are helping it out a lot. FFG knows their stuff, and have made some brilliant BGs. Get a few friends, have a game that lasts all night. Easier than getting everyone's PCs around, and cheaper when the power bill rolls in.
@Kirbytheslayer:
No question, Blizzard. $15x9,000,000 each month. Compare that to $100x10,000,000 total.

DISAGREE. Nintendo posted $667 MILLION IN PROFIT, that's "profit", not "revenue" in... Q2 2007 (Apr-Jun) alone... It's market Capitalization is over $50 billion now.
Blizzard had $1.5 billion in REVENUE in 2006.
Nintendo had $1.4 billion in PROFIT in 2006.
Six players? Do we need six players to play, or would less suffice? I know I can get two of my friends to play, another one a bit iffy, and the rest would probably refuse. So optimistically I'd have four to five players. Would that be enough to play if I bought this? Or would it be a waste of money? I'm really curious about this game, having been a SC fan back when it came out.
