Calm Down, Blizzard Still Hate Consoles

Bet the first thing that popped into many of your minds after the Activision/Blizzard merger was "oh, WoW on consoles, then". You're wrong. Least, you are for now, while intent still holds sway over wanton moneymaking. Blizzard president Mike Morhaime:

We currently don't have any plans right now on the console side. Blizzard's focus is on the PC side. If we were to release anything on the console side, that would be managed by the Blizzard side of the business...At this point, there are no plans to release any of the Blizzard franchises on console.
Any? Not even Lost Vikings? You're breaking our hearts, Mike. You're breaking our hearts.

  • Oh come on Blizzard, how about a WoW port?

Current WoW userbase + Xbox Live userbase = it prints money!

  • I think Diablo is one of the few franchises that's ripe for a move towards consoles, but if I recall correctly the team moved to NCSoft but the IP still belongs to Blizzard, right?

  • @dynendal:

No. Wow would be almost impossible without the benefits of PC.

But I have a feeling that Warcraft 3/4 may get ported over in the future.

  • @dynendal: It already prints money :P

Seriously though, I think WOW has become too vast and sprawling to ever move onto a console in this generation. I'm sure if Blizzard ever wanted to move into the console arena they'd build a new game from the ground up.

haha anyone else notice how redundant that quote is?

  • @F8X: The only thing i see the pc having over consoles as far as wow goes is addons. Everything else would probably work exactly the same seeing as consoles now support mouse/keyboard.

  • Does anybody want to say how PC gaming is dead? Back to UT3...

  • If they ever released that starcraft GHOST that would've been a pretty good addition to the console market being a FPS and everything. Then that IP suddenly went missing as well.

If Blizzard ever made a move to bring WoW to the consoles, you'd hear what 9 million nerds bitching in sync sounds like. Because it's a bad idea? No, just because there's a very thin line between a fan and a fanboy.

  • @Detre: Square pulled off a much more complicated MMO on PS2. WOW not making it to at least PS3 makes Blizzard look lazy, and Epic look much cooler for getting mod support and keyboard/mouse controller support for PS3.

  • @F8X:

    Are you kidding me?

WoW is the closest thing to a console-ish MMO in it's current state than it gets!

  • @NeoAkira: Blizzard doesn't want someone to read a loophole into what they are saying. If they didn't say the same thing 8 different ways, some people might try and say the phrasing allows for some way around it. If they said it only one way, it would be possible for someone to think they were leaving a way around it, or another interpretation open. Blizzard is being meticulous by restating the same thing over and over again in different ways, ensuring that no one will read something into the statement that is not meant to be there.

Yes, I just did what they did. Repetition.

  • @EnigmaNemesis: Tabula Rasa might be an easier port because its supposed to mix FPS and MMORPG together in one creamy Side-by-Side milkshake from Steak-n-Shake.

  • The team that helped create and set up battle.net moved on to NCSoft to make Guild Wars. Other members of the dev team went on to make Hellgate:London.

Blizzard most definitely still owns the Diablo IP.

In my mind, this exposes Blizzard's hardheadedness towards change. They have been working with the same 3 damn IP's forever, ignoring other, more interesting IP's (lost vikings) and seemingly distanced themselves from coming up with any new ideas. StarCraft 2? As far as I can tell it's not much more than a remake: graphical update + handful of new units + exactly the same gameplay = meh. Essentially, I'm not seeing any push towards innovation; simply the rehashing of older ideas.

    Anyway, that's my rant.

  • @EnigmaNemesis: FFXI on PS2 in 2003/4-ish is calling.

@TedTheShred: Starcraft 2 not being nearly the same game would have been like the BCS voters picking Hawaii for the national game instead of LSU.

Sure, it'd have made for a more interesting game, but Blizzard has no imagination when dollars are concerned just like the BCS voters.

  • @TedTheShred: I agree. They frustrate me in the same way the Final Fantasy series frustrates me, although Square Enix does a better job with inventing a new IP once in a blue moon. The thing about the Blizzard games is that they're just so damn good. The polish on their games is amazing. I guess that's the trade-off for not making any risks in several years (really, since World of Warcraft came out).

  • And that dashes my hopes for a next gen Rock 'n' Roll Racing using the Guitar Hero controller. I don't know how it would work, just that it would be awesome.

  • @Strangelove: ut3 from what i've played sitting in front of me is the same game i played in '99 it just looks shinier/browner :/

  • @Darth Navster: WTF mate?

  • so does this make them actilizzard?

  • I said it before, I will say it again.

Life cycles of Consoles is too fast for the Development cycle of Blizzard. That's why we will never have Ghost.

  • that's retarded.

Blizzard saying they wont bring Starcraft or Diablo to Wii is a flat out rejection of sweet cash money.

  • Warcraft moved from RTS to MMORPG and now has what? 9 million subscribers? Sure, in terms of gameplay, it did not innovate a whole lot, but it was a big step in the terms of the IP.

People overestimate how much people will cling to antiquated ideas, and underestimate how much they appreciate real change.

  • @ittekimasu: I agree, I miss that game. I wish it had actually hit the shelves.

  • Aww, that's a shame. I would really like a new Lost Vikings on the PSP or DS. I'm serious, I loved that game.
I see lots of people foaming at the mouth about a WoW console release, but I don't see the attraction. You'd need a keyboard, because you'll have bars and bars full of skills, and you'll need a mouse. Why bother dicking around setting up a proper desk to put all that crap on just so you can have the pleasure of reading tiny text 20 feet away? I can't find any reason why anyone would want to do it this way. Just use your PC, the game isn't exactly hardware demanding.

@TedTheShred: Ahh, someone who shares my opinion on StarCraft 2. I'm not alone after all.

  • C'mon, don't be stupid Blizzard. Create Starcraft DS, already. Aside from the obvious selling point of making more money than most nations, they'll also develop a great relationship with Nintendo as this will make every Korean buy a DS and create more interest in Starcraft 2.

Common sense, if you ask me.

  • I want Lost Viking DLC.

And Diablo II on consoles. It would require a bit of reworking, but it would be worth it for same-console co-op.

  • @EnigmaNemesis: guess you missed FFXI, which IS a console MMO that was designed from the ground up as one (unlike Everquest Adventures)

@Dragonzigg: Have you SEEN how vast and sprawling FFXI is, its landmass is almost twice the size of WoW.

There really is no limitation at this point as to why WoW is not on a console other than the fact that Blizzard doesnt want to do it, its that simple.

  • it has to be in the works, because there is no way blizzarctivision-i think that sounds better than activision blizzard-will skip out on console money, i mean, i'm sure there are tons of people playing wow, but its got to be going down, not up, and if they ported it to consoles, it would seriously boost sales, i mean, are they really even a big corporation? wheres the money grubbing, wheres the cross-platform love fest?

  • aww. the lost vikings and blackthorne are 2 of the best snes games ever - i guess they won't be on VC soon. :(

  • @Falconfire: I still think the aesthetic design of FFXI is better than WOW.

Plus... Absolute Virtue pwned the shit out of anything WOW had for the longest time. I'm almost tempted to go back with Wings of the Goddess...

  • @DarkTravesty:

I didn't say it reinvented the wheel, I just enjoy it. The new hoverboard is hilarious fun to me.

  • @FeendRendor:

When I think of consoles, I dont think of FPS, since they originated and are more native to PCs. /wink

    @Falconfire:

I am talking the "simplicity" of WoW, etc. I know about FFXI. And how easily it could be played on a controller or with the QWERTY chatpad for the 360 and the KB support for the PS3.@

  • "Give me Blackthorne or give me ... uh, something only on PC, I guess!"

  • Go Blizz, go Valve. Yeah I'm shallow.

  • Image of huginn huginn at 09:19 PM on 12/03/07 *

Hmm, hey guys, how about Starcraft Ghost?

some of us still have hope.

  • Image of BPMζ BPMζ at 09:27 PM on 12/03/07 *

    @Huginn:
    lulz
At this point, I'll bet they'll release it on Wii and PS2, since it won't require them to redo the game assets [PhilKenSebben]Ha! Ha! Ha!... Assets[/PhilKenSebben] in HD.

  • Why is Blizz so dumb about consoles. I have to assume it is because of limited resources/time/maintaining focus.

  • @Huginn:

Starcraft Ghost was worth it just for the artwork.

  • Yeah, actually, Blizzard should definitely stay away from consoles. Wii for example.

I don't think leveling up and waggling really would go together well anyway. I'd rather have my bank account robbed while slouching in a swivel chair than dancing on my living room floor.

  • @GUY_JIN: Agreed. Lost vikings and blackthorne rocked socks. Blizzard can do console games well, and it doesnt necessarily have to be a "craft" license.

  • @Huginn: Yeah. What ever happened to Starcraft Ghost?

  • 3D Lost Vikings platforming/puzzle solving game....drools at the thought of it.

They could always pull an Everquest (ala Champions of Norrath) and release an action-rpg set in the World of Warcraft world. Or even better, set it in the Diablo world because that IP is already action-rpg goodness.

  • Oh wow.
Expect more ports of crappy games.
I like where is it going. Why make original games if they can just port everpopular shit.

  • Is everyone sure the second "Blizzard" in the quote wasn't supposed to be "Activision"? Looks like a typo in the quote on the referring site to me.

  • The dev time for most blizzard games is longer than the shelf life of any console...besides, they make way more cash not having to give a slice of the pie to MSoft/Nintendo/Sony.

  • Sure they SAY they won't make games for consoles...until Activizzard makes the $199 WoWbox.

  • Activision is still around? Blizzard didn't change gears when Vivendi purchased them. The only merger that really injured a good name that I can think of is Square-Enix.

  • Uninterested? That's not what the blue shirts were whispering at Blizzcon.

  • Luke. You made me die a little inside with that post. Go
