In discussing their upcoming Boom Boom Rocket, Bizarre revealed that just before Geometry Wars was released over Xbox Live Arcade, they were feeling mighty charitable:
Geometry Wars was really intended as a gift to hardcore gamers and we initially wanted to give the game away for free. When it became evident that we couldn't do this, we said to Microsoft "what's the absolute bare minimum we can charge". They said 400 points, so we went with that.
That's swell of you guys! What they say next is a little odd, though.
In terms of the risk, it was fairly low. Stephen Cakebread did the bulk of the work on his own, so costs weren't astronomical. Contrast this to Boom Boom Rocket where we have an entire team working on the project, and you'll see the risk increases.
Goes to show that you don't need a big team and to take that risk, then, do you? Geometry Wars is still the best thing on XBL Arcade, and it only needed one guy.

ET was programmed using only one guy too.
There's always two sides to a coin.
Bulk of the work doesn't mean everything, now does it??
coulda, shoulda, woulda.. would have been a nice hook for gold service if it was free "this is the kind of product you can expect if you upgrade". Never mind the truth, its a nice hook
Sad that the one-man show and a card game are the best things for me to spent MS points on though
Anyway, they don't seem to mention exactly how they were going to determine who was a hardcore gamer and who wasn't.
Maybe they wanted to give it as a free download to people who had a gamerscore of more than 10,000
Now that would be interesting...
Remember, don't quote me, it's just speculation.
@TOPolk:
I don't think Geometry Wars was rushed to be finished under five weeks like ET was.
so how come it wasnt allowed to be free?...texas hold em was free for at least a few weeks
@G1GAHURTZ:
I think he had help with the sound effects and music - that's about it.
Best. XBLA. Game. Ever.
Bundling it free with Gold would probably move quite a few people over to the 'dark' side of paying-to-play, methinks. It's probably wishful thinking though.
@IronsUK:
Possibly, but it's very rare to find any programmer who is even half way capable of making a slightly decent looking graphic.
I'm sure he didn't do all of the art on his own.
@TOPolk: Do NOT make fun of ET. That game made me cry. Best game EVER! Even better than Desert Bus.
TMNT > Geometry Wars
Uno > Geometry Wars
Heck, even Mutant Storm Reloaded is better, but it cost twice as much.
Anyway, they don't seem to mention exactly how they were going to determine who was a hardcore gamer and who wasn't.
I assume "hardcore gamers" were those that bought the console during the first month or three of launch.
Well it's the best thing on there, but you know, that's like saying The Odysee is the best drama out there: it's a given, but it's so far beyond everything else that you can't make a fare comparison since there's other great things out there.
Geometry Wars is insanely overrated. It's a nice visual showpiece for the 360. That doesn't make it a great game. It is a good game, mind you, but that's all it is. It looked phenomenal back when nothing else of any note was out for Arcade.
400 was a good price for it, that's about how much entertainment value is there IMO.
I liked Geometry Wars and think it was worth every penny...I certainly hope the guy that designed it got a percentage of every one sold.
In the future, though, levels of difficulty would be nice. I never felt I really got the chance to improve. I'd be playing for a few minuted, then all of a sudden if became insanely difficult.
So wait....you mean to tell me this guy's name is Cakebread?
I just hope the next geometry wars has a CPU control feature... Since I'm the only good player among my friends I have to play while they get umm 'chemically altered' and frankly thats not fair.
yes. its 'impossible' to give something for free.
....whatever!
@detox84:
You beat me to my question...
Anyway, I still have 100 points left over from buying the bare minimum of microsoft points to get geometry wars. At this rate, I don't think I'll ever use that loose change.
I wish this had been free, then I'd actually have it. I refuse to give anything resembling endorsement to paid digital downloads.
Yet they threatened legal action against the guy who developed the superior Grid Wars, a free Geometry Wars clone.
@Psudonym: You can buy MS points in 800 or 1600 unit increments at most local game stores, on cards. It's the only way to go IMO.
I don't know about best thing on arcade, but it's certainly one of the better values on arcade. I only wish Microsoft charged this amount for most XBLA games.
But the whole thing is really subjective, based on your likes/dislikes. Personally, I found a couple of other games on XBLA that I played a heck of a lot more than GW.
Boom Boom Rocket does not look really good. I think they should have made Geometry Wars 2.
So no games will ever be made free on Live arcade?
:-O
No love for the story submit?
:(
I wish more games could be made by one person. We'd see a good deal more creativity.
@GOLD5: Acutally they already gave a game away for free for a limited time. Texas Holdem was free when it launched.
