Bionic Commando Trailer Lets The Explosions Do The Talking

Now, this is more like it. Why can't more trailers be like this?

This new Bionic Commando promo takes the brave decision to set aside the usual stylistic crutches of game trailing in favour of 1 minute 13 seconds of straight gameplay.

No alt-rock soundtrack, no fast edits, not even an over-reliance on pre-rendered cutscenes. Just a MAN swinging after ROBOTS using his BIONIC ARM. By videogame trailer standards, this is practically Dogme 95.

Bionic Commando Is "Not Fucking Spider-Man"

People are worried that Bionic Commando might be a bit too hard. I’m one of them. There’s a fear that, because the game’s swinging mechanic is both integral to the game and difficult to master at the same time, a lot of players may not take the time to learn the system and give up on the game. Is this a concern to the development team? No, not really. Making the mechanic hard was the whole point, says GRIN's Ulf Andersson:
It’s not fuckin’ Spider-Man. We made a swing mechanism that’s not automatic. This means you have to focus a bit more, because it’s a proper mechanic instead of just a button press; it’s the core mechanic of the game. Everything in the game is built around that, from the environments to the enemy.

So, Has Bionic Commando Been Fixed Yet?

Mike played Bionic Commando a few months back, at a Capcom press event. Said it looked great, but had a few problems. I played it for around 20 minutes today, going through a tutorial level and one regular stage from the game, and you know what? It looks great. But has a few problems. More »

Bionic Commando Movie Is A Definite Possibility

Yup. Not a possible possibility. A definite possibility. Anyway, Capcom are good at two things. Making games, then exploiting the crap out of those games when they're done. So with Bionic Commando just about done, I figured I'd ask Ben Judd whether Capcom were planning on exploiting the crap out of Bionic Commando. Cartoons, movies, that sort of thing.
Yeah, sure. I mean, we've already got action figures and a comic book; movies are a definite possibility. Capcom are active IP holders, they do a lot of turning stuff into movies, so...yeah.

Bionic Commando Delayed, Coming "Early 2009"

Speaking with Capcom's Ben Judd and GRIN's Ulf Andersson today at TGS, we learned that Bionic Commando - which is playable on the showroom floor - won't be out in 2008. Instead, it's been delayed to early 2009. Or, as they put it, "very eeeeaaaarrrlllyyy 2009". That's the console versions, too; the PC version might be out at the same time, it might not, Andersson saying that version's date is "up to marketing".

The PC is always a slippery slope because of piracy, stuff like sorting out DRM, making sure we don't have too little or too much. But also because we want to make sure it doesn't feel like a port, so we can add a little extra polish to the PC version.

Sad, no? Still, "early 2009" isn't as far away as it used to be.

Here Is A Bionic Commando Figure (Right Here)

Capcom has pictures of an Bionic Commandoprototype figure. Imagine that! Must say that the updated character design has grown on me, dreads and all. And this fig looks rather nice. While the Capcom blog did have pictures, it didn't have any release or pricing info. Bummer.

    Click through the gallery below.

Here, Your Bionic Commando Box Art

Dreads, menacing glare, suspenders, smoking, fresh hot dogs...yup, this is Bionic Commando! Memorise this box art, so you can recognise the game when it hits shelves early next year. 360 version is above, PS3 and PC are after the jump, though don't go expecting any radical differences between the three. Kojima Needs "Clamps", BioShock "Easy As Hell"

That's Bionic Commando producer Ben Judd. He's got opinions on many things. Hideo Kojima, for example, Ben Judd has an opinion on Hideo Kojima. About the Metal Gear Solid creator, Judd offers:

I liked Metal Gear Solid 4, with the exception of the story. I like Kojima's stories, but they keep getting longer and longer. He needs to put the clamps on himself and only give himself 30 minutes. If he did that I'm sure they'd be fantastic.

So it seems Judd thinks Kojima needs either an editor or the ability to show self-restraint. Agree? Disagree? Oh! Judd also weighs in on that "easy as hell" game BioShock. That, after the jump: More »
