Bethesda and Zombie Studios are teaming up to bring a new counter-terrorist themed shooter called Rogue Warrior to the 360.
Blah. More counter-terrorism? But this sounds neat: the Unreal Engine 3-powered game will have four-player Live co-op and 24 player deathmatch battles online. But this is the cool part:
Bethesda and Zombie are touting a multiplayer tiling system, which allows players to build multiplayer maps from sections of other maps. According to the magazine, each level is made up from three sections - you choose one, the other team picks another, the then centre section is plucked out of the list at random by the Xbox 360 (from over 200 combinations).Opposing teams won't know what the other team has picked until they're in the game. The main aim of this feature is to stop players getting bored of playing on the same maps, according to the makers.
That could be fun: a nice compromise between having professionally designed maps and yet not playing whatever Rogue Warrior's equivalent of de_dust is ad infinitim.

I must say...that is probably the single best thing I heard coming onto the 360.
It will be interesting to see how that plays out.
Are there going to be zombies? With a studio name such as "Zombie Studios" I would be expecting zombies.
Anyhow, the map idea sounds good on paper to add to variations to a finite amount of maps. With much certainty, there will be a de_dust map mod that will be played ad infinitum, defeating the whole concept of variable "lego" maps.
No PS3 love from Bethesda?
I must say...BOOORING.
Xbox360 is falling into the same trap as the first xbox. If I want to play first person shooters, I'll use my PC. Show us something different, huh?
360 won't stray from FPS. Why? Cause their target audience is primarily 24 year old guys who like to play Halo. I'm not even making that up, it was in an interview with someone from MS, I forget who though.
Damn it Bethsoft, where is my Fallout 3?
I must say... AWESOME.
Xbox360 is showing us something different.
This is the next best thing to entirely procedurally generated maps, which probably wouldn't be that popular because people wouldn't be able to memorise the spawns and snipe camps. I predict, though, that what will happen is people will figure out the most friendly map section for each side, and end up voting to play them when they are that side every time - so after a few months the only really random part is the centre section. It might even be that, de_dust-like, the same section becomes snipe whore and camper favourite - so it's always chosen, and you have a map at the end 2/3rds identical.
sounds very interesting
Me and a bunch of friends wanted to do something similar back with Team fortress, you'd have a standard centre section of the map but create you own fortress that fits a set of rules - this would be added to the centre section and the opposing team would add theirs.
League Team fortress battles would then ensue :)
Great idea, but overused theme..
But does it have horse armor?
This isn't really as cool as I thought it would be. Whoo, another counter terrorist game. I'm thrilled.
BlindsidesDork, that was Peter Moore. He was being somewhat facetious and describing the core audience that already purchases their product, suggesting that in an ideal world, everyone would be inside their existing market.
Frankly, the "Xbox only has FPSes" spiel has lost any cachet it may have had in the past. People who drag it out for another round just show that they haven't even had the sense to glance over the shelves, let alone pick up an Xbox or 360 controller.
the procedural maps was done by Soldier of Fortune 2
It sucked.
Oh come on whats wrong with playing de_dust FOR ALL TIMES! When men have long since died and the plants have taken over the abandoned cities DE_DUST WILL STILL BE PLAYED.
God I hate that map.
Anyway even if you pick your "tiles" im pretty sure people after a while people are going to pick the same tiles over and over again for their sides of the map because they are the "best" ones and then the middle will be random. Just a guess but it sounds pretty likely.
Wow I'm so fuggin excited!!!
A FPS for the 360! Thank GOD!
I thought this system was falling into the same rut as the original Xbox....y'know too many RPGs.
If this sells well then we may see more FPS on the system. YES!
FalcomAdol is right - actually Xbox has good contenders in many genres, perhaps they're just not recognized as such big brands. Take Forza Motorsport compared to Gran Turismo, for example.
Not to say the spectrum couldn't be wider. It'd be nice to see more stuff in the 'katamari'-department, there aren't that many titles going outside the tested and proven genres. Perhaps XBLA will eventually remedy this.
The name they chose is similar to the Rogue Trooper game.
Last night I played four different variations of the exact same map on CS:S.
This game sounds awesome.
The name they chose is based on the 15+ year old series of "Rogue Warrior" books. Which is what the IP for this game is also based on. Funny how those types of things work out sometimes. http://www.dickmarcinko.com/
Unless I'm way off, the name comes from the book(series) "Rogue Warrior" by ex-SEAL Team 6 founder Richard Marcinko. In other words, its a licensed game like the Tom Clancy ones.
first off, a game, fps or nt, that has dick marcinko, and his crazed seals sitting around telling the makers exactly how it should be to be more realistic, sounds great. but then again that was my reaction when they made the first ghost recon, and went to bragg to get input. but too many people thought it was to hard or whatever. so now its just like counter strike, and halo and tha friggin others. rocket launchers to the face, ad nauseim. at least this game will be as real as any of us will see.
