What happens when you throw a launch event for a game with 11 million subscribers in the biggest city in America? You get a spectacle of epic proportions. Spike TV was there. Geoff Keighley was there. Just about everyone from Blizzard was there. Midnight launch events for video games tend to be hit or miss these days. Considering the amount of big-name titles being release this holiday, fans can't stand outside in line for every game. Blizzard didn't have to worry, though, they'll come out for World of Warcraft. A rough guesstimate says there were about 200 people there, which wasn't too bad considering it was around 40 degrees outside. Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of cosplay, either. But Blizzard promised me a something special would happen when the clock hit midnight.

Let's. Find. Out. As part of a survey commissioned by IGN - dubbed "Are You Game?" - market research firm Ipsos MediaCT asked a whole bunch of American gamers where they shop when looking for games. The answers, while not shocking, are still interesting (the percentages flying waaay over 100% because, obviously, most people buy games from more than one store). It's nearly time! With two weeks to go before the worldwide launch of the next World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard has outlined plans for midnight launch events around the globe. Four locations in the states will host Blizzard developers signing copies of the game, with increased copies of the Collector's Edition on hand for those of us (like me) who missed out on pre-ordering the big box. Unfortunately for most of us, those events are in New York, San Francisco, Anaheim, and Austin, TX. Bah. Best Buy Offers Gift Cards for HD-DVD Players
Are you one of the unfortunates stuck with a now useless HD-DVD player? Did you purchase it at Best Buy before February 23rd? If you answered yes to both of these questions, you can return that old door stop to Best Buy and get a $50 gift card in return. According to CNN it is estimated that upwards of $10 million in US Gift cards. HD-DVD owners will be found through Best Buy's Reward Zone program, service plans and online orders. The gift cards will automatically be mailed out to qualifying folks at the beginning of may. If you are not a Reward Zone member you can bring in your BB receipt or credit card info. They will also be offering an online trade-in center where customers can unload their unwanted players beginning March 21. More »
