Rumour: Pandemic At Work On New Batman Game

There's whispers that Pandemic have been handed the keys to the Batman franchise, and are already toiling away on the game based on the upcoming Batman Begins sequel. Good news, that, since Pandemic have a none-too-shabby track record and that given the movie's still aaaaages away, they should/might have enough time to make a decent game out of it.

Or another rubbish Splinter Cell knock-off. Could go either way, really.

  • When I heard about the first Batman game, I imagined a full fledged Gotham City to roam around in, fight random crime... Ah la Spider-Man games. Have a Batmobile, a BatWing... All that kind of fun stuff.

Luckily, I read the reviews first. But imagine what I described: Spider-Man, except you scare the living DAYLIGHTS out of folks, most of which don't even think you exist beyond the form of a legend.

    Pandemic, get on it.

  • Between this and LEGO Batman we may finally have some decent Batman gaming on the way. It's long overdue.

@PapaBear: So, Spiderman at night, but only... good?

mmm, I'm thinking more of a GTA:Batman, at night.

Not a terrible idea if done right.

  • If anything, I'd like a free-roaming Gotham City, and I want to run over Joker with the Batmobile.

  • I'm Batman!

  • GTA: Gotham...I shudder to think of the Hot Coffee incident or the dating minigames.

How about a Villains game? You play a Batman villain and try to destroy Batman. Of course, the game would be impossible to win.

  • If Pandemic were to model it after either Crackdown or Assassin's Creed, it could be a spectaculr game.

  • I heard about this in December from someone who works at Pandemic. I didn't say anything though cause he wanted me to keep it hush hush. Now that the cat is sort of out of the bag... I wouldn't call it a rumour. Someone I know who works there is working on the game.

  • Wow! We may get to have a good Batman game yet...though my expectations are low.

Being a huge fan of the Batman mythos, I'd say basing Batman on the Splinter Cell engine isn't a bad idea. But making it suck is. The previous Batman game was mediocre at best. You're freaking Batman yet you can't even beat a low-level thug.

A GTA inspired Batman sounds nice but the limitations has to be there (ie Batman can't be seen by everyday civilians most of the time. That's how he builds his aura) and other stuff.

  • @Islandkiwi:

Of course it would be impossible to win, what with you having to leave him alone in an overly elaborate trap and just HOPING everything goes according to plan...

  • Actually this isn't really a new "Batman" game, because the title is The Dark Knight, if it's really based on the upcoming movie. The Dark Knight is the first Batman movie without "Batman" in the title.

  • batman GTA could work, but would it encourage you to try to stay out of sight somehow? Would definitely love to fly a Tim Burton inspired batwing around a huge gotham city though. That would just be cool as hell. Would seem kind of strange wandering the city during hte day though.

  • @YCS:

Personally, I always liked the animated series of Batman from the mid 90's on the best. The universe just seemed... More "real" than Tim Burton's.

Model the BatWing after the one in there, and we have a winner.

Personally, though, if they gave me a grappling gun, I'd find my own way around the city. Sure, not as fast as Spider-Man, and I wouldn't be able to jump quite as far distances between buildings like Crackdown, but it could add some fun to moving around the city. Throw in the Batmobile (preferably the Urban Tank from Batman Begins, but I'd take the style from The Animated Series too) as a little extra mobility, and I would have a ball with this.

  • Wouldn't a rubbish Splinter Cell knockoff in turn be a rubish Metal Gear Solid knockoff?

  • I really like the job they did on Star Wars Clone Wars.... Remember that game guys? The on foot sections sucked, but otherwise it wasn't bad right?

  • Maybe if they get this game right they can work on a damn Superman game and get that done correctly. I have yet to play a Superman game that was good.

  • @PapaBear: I'm with you, until Batman Begins, the animated series was the best tv/movie adeaptation of Batman.

But there is definitely something to be said for the old Adam West series.

As for this game, I hope it's good, but I don't care that much. As long as it doesn't interfere with Lego Batman, I'm happy.

  • @etho:

Oh, there are a LOT of things to be said about the old Adam West series. Unfortunately, none of them are GOOD things. I can't stand that show, as it took my beloved Dark Knight (Batman has always been my favorite Superhero) and turned him into a tights wearing weenie.

Adam West's best role to date has to be playing himself as Mayor on "Family Guy." To date, he is still my favorite character.

"Oh, Quohog, it's a screaming match you want is it?"

  • I certainly hope Pandemic makes a halfway decent Batman game, but one that isn't only tied into the movie but also feature other villians from Batman's rogue's gallery.

Spiderman 3 was a campy letdown, made just for fanboys and the game was so rushed that it sucked even worse than the movie.HopefullY Pandemic will break the rut of lousy movie based game with The Dark Knight.

  • @PapaBear:

I wouldn't want Tim Burtons gotham in the game. But that bat wing and batmobile? Absolutely.

Could be interesting doing a cell shaded type animated series world. Would probably help with the frame rate and streaming as well. Not sure how a stealth charachter like Batman would really fit in the scheme of a sandbox game the more I think about it, though I would certianly love to see an attempt at it.

Ultimately I guess it would come down to AI and what type of gadgets he'd have. If they can nail those in a GTA type game, I think I'd buy a next gen system if that arrived.

Batman wii could be interesting if handled correctly.
