The UCSC engineering faculty had ten people and 14,000 post-it notes lying around, with five hours to kill. What did they do? What ANYONE would/should have in the same situation: they made an enormous Donkey Kong mural that must be pushing 40-feet tall.
So, so amazing.

That's the biggest post it note mural I've ever seen.
What a waste of paper
Wow, I wish I was that creative! :)
@dadeisvenm: What a waste of a comment space that could have been occupied by someone besides you.
Yeh you think its all innocent, but on the other sides of those post-it notes is a mural of job-related tasks waiting to be completed!
impressive
Yes, well done. Thanks for thinking about the enviroment so much guys.
@Janaff: roffles
wow....that one of the most impressive things I've seen...
I'm wondering how they kept everything lined up so well.
3M should be snapping shots for an ad campaign
All you paper haters -
Lets say 6 Post-It Notes is equivalent to an A4 page, that makes about 2333 pages or roughly 4 and a half reams (500 sheets) of paper - the average workplace probably goes through this in a 3 month period just so people can print out their emails and read them infront of their monitors.
Considering this took only 5 hours and didn't use any printer ink it should be seen as a productive use of the paper (ignoring the glue and the fact that people will continue to print out their emails so they can 'look busy' as they wander aimlessly around their offices).
Plenty more on reams here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_ream
Looking at the pile of post-it notes purchased, 14,000 post-its aren't really that many. You probably get that same volume of paper in junk mail each month.
Just plain wow!
Treehugger is wincing right now
I can see Treehugger wincing
It actually says it only took 6400 post-its on their website (http://www.soe.ucsc.edu/~inio/dk/?fb)
Still - awesome.
I presume they are leaving that up? What a waste if it all has to come down again. Very impressive.
I hate myself for not having helped in the creation of such a masterpiece.
wow now that is a work of art.
Damn, that is impressive.
Since the Post-Its are being used for the sake of art, I wouldn't call it a waste.
I'm a student at UCSC. That building, Engineering 2, houses the newly-created (as of Fall 2006) Computer Game Design major here. I'm taking a video game design seminar there this quarter.
The funny thing is, I didn't even see this until yesterday. But it's even cooler in person.
Wow. Guerrilla art is getting assaulted by hyperactive environmentalists now.
What's to stop them from recycling this paper when it comes down?
It's Jumpman Vs Donkey Kong isn't it? If you're going to call him Mario and botch the whole thing up I guess you can say he is saving Princess Peach instead of Pauline too.
I'm not really this anal. It's a joke.
School of Economics? Doesn't seem too economical to me.
@doubtful: And what was to stop them from actually using the Post-Its first before wasting them on a trash generating project?
@adamcole:
Princess Peach? Surely you mean Princess Toadstool.
By far the coolest thing I will see this week.
I could have sworn I've seen these photos years ago.
@br549: Princess Toadstool was the Yankee name for Princess Peach.
Man, that's totally awesome. I wish we could do something cool like that here, but we don't have any big spaces like that.
@br549:
I stand corrected.
@Witzbold:
It was Toadstool in the US version of SMB as well.
The most impressive part about it as they got them all to stick to take the picture! Every post-it note I use falls down or curls up after a few minutes.
UCSC is so full of hippies (go cartman, i'm joking, I grew up in santa cruz) I think one show of slightly overused paper post-its is automatically negated by the fact that it is pretty artistic in nature, and...
...that shot from the inside, how did they get up to the top level, or can I not see the walkways from that shot? I need glasses. If I don't then that had to of been physically challenging as well.
I go there and didn't even know this was up.
Kotaku...keeping me informed
All of the people bashing this use of post-it notes should keep in mind that they are still usable. It's not like they're burning the whole thing. Besides, this work will probably be up there for quite a while.
Heh, awesome.
Very Cool! Would like to have seen a YouTube timelapse of the entire start-finish of this...
So, is this considered an act of Terrorism?
I approve.
-Management.
@chronubis: I thought so, too, but it just occurred to me that the one I saw years ago was a Super Mario Bros. one, right here on Kotaku.
It's been a long time since you guys posted one of these, and it's a good one! Thx
brilliant. it looks really damn cool.
@axiomatic:
hahaha. nice!
Go BANANA SLUGS!!!
How freaking obsessive compulsive do you have to be to get that so incredibly precise?!
It boggles.
This puts MIT to shame.
psssh all MIT does is put silly stuff on top of that dome on their main building. this beats the hell out of anything MIT does in terms of silly creativity.
@macdeth: Ah, that's right. Thanks! :)

This is the same building/windows two years ago, in response to macdeth and chronubis. Giant super mario post it mural.
this beats the crap out of that 8-bit art show stuff.
As a former UCSC banana slug I got to say I'm feeling quite proud right about now.
I love huge art projects. Especially ones having to do with video games.
Wonder if Boston would consider this terrorism as well...
Still, wonderful example of art immitating art. I'd love to see some of this up at WSU.
proud to be a slug
I worked on the Donkey Kong mural. Can I comment?
@ Spare_Change:
I worked on the mural. Just you wait. You'll get your fix.
And I thought mankind is trying to save the rain forests?
