Hands On: PainStation

In what has to be the most fitting denouement, today I played the PainStation first hand in Yokohama. Gimmicky yes. The T-shirts and branded band-aids were a major turn-off. However, the piece was not nearly as loathsome as previously imagined.

The visual appearance of the cabinet is super slick. (It is supposedly art.) However, the game play is actually somewhat intriguing — if its possible to be so in an utterly repulsive and repugnant sort of way. That's the point, I guess.

Players face-off in a game of Pong. One hand controls the game knob, and the other the other rests on a metal grill. Your hand either gets burned, electrocuted or whipped. Take your hand of the grill, and you loose. I was so afraid of what the damn machine would do, I couldn't concentrate and started choking big time. As soon as the metal grill got hot, I took my hand off the machine and lost. Whatever. I suck at Pong anyway.
