Fighting Mania: Fist of the North Star Impressions

cFighting_Mania.jpg

I try to make it a habit, whenever visiting a city, to check out any arcade and video game store I come across in my travels. I've been in El Paso, Texas for part of the week and while here managed to visit two arcades, one OK, one not so much.

Typically, most of my time is spent feeding tokens or quarters into machines that spew out tickets for Tristan, but if I see a game I haven't played I try to play it. I've seen a number of Guitar Freaks and Drum Mania in arcades, but this week was the first time I saw a Fighting Mania game.

Like the other rhythm games, this one is all about timing, but instead of hitting a drum pad or fret, you have to punch a big orange circle when it lights up. The particular version I came across was Fist of the North Star, which I happen to friggin love.

The game was progressing nicely until it came to the finishing move, the Hundred Crack Fist, which requires you to deliver 30 to 50 punches to the six pads in less than 10 seconds. Mind you, these are real punches. I almost managed it, almost. And now, a day later, I feel like someone beat my back for an hour with aluminum baseball bats. Yay old age! I feel like I'm already dead.
