Hey Kotakuland, Tell Us About You

AlbumCovers-TheWho-WhoAreYou%281978%29.jpg If you read the site will any regularity, you probably know a great deal about us — too much, probably. But what about you? We want to know all about you. We'll even give a US $100 Amazon.com gift certificate to one of you lucky bastards! Yes, it's time for a demographic survey. All your info will be kept strictly private, so you don't have to worry about getting email spam or annoying sales pitches. The data will distributed in anonymous aggregate form. In short: We just want to know who the hell is reading the site. Ya dig?

There's a survey below that will take only a minute or so to fill out. And if you are so inclined, you can use the comments section to tell us a little bit about yourself — whether it be your day job, your hometown or a personal non sequitur. Sometime that will shed a little light on who you are for us and fellow comments. We know you're just more than some random internet inhabitant.

  • Wait, the survey said something about responding for contest eligibility? As in the comment section?

Well I guess I'm covered if thats the case...

  • 18-year old (male) freshman at Baylor University, majoring in Political Science. Studying in Honors program, enjoy intramural sports, painting up for Big XII football games, and listening to music. Frat parties are frequent, as are regular trips to Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio.

Oh, I enjoy video games, too.

    Haha, The Who. Awesome.

Although, a good alternative image would've been one of Nintendo's earlier ads, where the slogan was "who are you?" and often involved a Nintendo character's head being taped over someone else's.

  • Hey Kotaku,
My name is Nic, and I am a 25 year old Iraq Vet. I work a mundane full time job on the weekends while I put myself through full time college. I still find time for videogames though, and I am always checking Kotaku for gaming news while I am rotting at work.

  • 23-year old New Yorker currently in exile in New Mexico working at a copy-editor at a small rural paper while I wait for my big break in journalism.

    Oh God, my life...

  • Wow, that was a really short survey.

...To anyone reading this, you're not actually supposed to talk about yourself here in the comments.

  • Image of Maldron Maldron at 12:36 AM on 10/23/07 *

A bored man who prefers to think of himself as a kid, with an addiction to gaming. Recently started working at a gamestop, place of horrors to some, a second home to him.

Indecisive in non-gaming matters, this poster has put off any serious look at transferring to a four-year college going on two years now and is running out of classes to grab from the local community college.

This poster is putting off studying for an Abnormal Psychology test for his 8am class right this very second. Loves the subject, but can't be bothered to stick his nose to the books, and is stared at by people harboring a seething anger for escaping with Bs and above with his uncommitted style of studenting.

  • Hey Kotaku whats up? i know you guys don't really care so i will just say something more important that i just found out just now.

Guitar Hero 3 (the PS2 version) just got Leaked online. So now i go some work to do.

@Chesu: Then explain And if you are so inclined, you can use the comments section to tell us a little bit about yourself - whether it be your day job, your hometown or a personal non sequitur. to me then, bud-deeee.

    *Flees the scene, whooping*

  • That survey was pretty painless.

32, and work for a movie entertainment Ad Agency in Hollywood, as a Flash Developer. Went to Otis College of Art and Design, Illustration and Design Major. Killed about 7 years after graduation struggling and working at a dead end, retail job. Favorite genre of music is movie soundtracks when I'm working, 80's hairband when I'm driving (oh sorry, this is a commenting system, not a confession booth!).

This is a cool idea-- I've always wondered who else was browsing here!

  • I'm a 25 year old male in Boulder, CO, and I'm the assistant manager of the Gamestop there. I write game reviews for a tiny magazine I won't mention here.

In my free time, I do science.

  • Bernbaum is a mid-20's postgrad student studying palaeontology in Brisbane, Australia.

My research allows me to travel the country a fair bit, and I've had the experience to dig up dinosaurs, carnivorous kangaroos and currently, fossilized slime. The nature of the work is that I spend alot of time behind a computer, analysing data, which is the less-colourful aspect of getting to say "I'm a palaeontologist". This gets boring quick, which is why Kotaku is such a welcome reprieve. The moment my brain gets sore, I do a refresh, post a few comments, and then back to work !!!

Gaming-wise, i'm probably the most hardcore now than I ever have beenm now that I'm able to afford all the goodies I want. I frequently mention that I'm a former "Nintendo Fanboy", having espoused console loyalties and gone multi-platform.

My favourite games have been, and always will be single player adventure games: Zelda, FF, Metroid etc..., the happy medium between casual platformers and brain-melting RPG's.

  • Hey guys
Long time reader, very rare poster lol
Im 23 and im a guy from NYC
Im a dispatcher at a car service, I like RPG's, fighting games, and some puzzle games
Currently playing FFT : War of the Lions
Eagerly anticipating most underdog games by underdog producers like SUDA 51 and also waiting the Harmonix Activision clash coming in the next month lol
what else is there to say besides Kotaku has become a regular facet of my life because of my gaming hobby lol
I also like anime, comics and manga haha

  • Oh, kmon .. this questions wheren't worth of 100 bucks! .. ask country/languages/virginity status! ..

I was expecting a bunch of funny questions like: "How many times you reload kotaku per minute?"

  • Image of ManjiKengo ManjiKengo at 12:44 AM on 10/23/07 *

    @Chesu:
    But thats no fun!

I'm not disclosing my name for obvious Gamestop reasons, but I'm a 22 year old male. I enjoy listening to music. I read Kotaku every day before and after I goto work for all the latest gossip and cool stuff happening in the world of vigi games. I'm currently in college and all that fun stuff.

Why do I get some sort of dick dastardly and muttley vibe from some of the kotaku crew?

  • heavy drinker

  • Junior in Journalism here at Boston University--I'd love to write for Play Magazine (after Dave Halverson dies and goes to hell!) while I work on a couple dozen long, cliched scifi/fantasy novels.

Also just go to note that I absolutely adore European power metal like Blind Guardian and Nightwish. . . but I *also* love perennial college-rockers-cum-old-dudes, They Might Be Giants. HAVE I GONE TOTALLY MAD?

I've also developed an unhealthy man-crush on Bashcraft based solely on his adorable little smirk. My fiancee is not pleased :(

    @HoorayForCorn:

Think it's wise to alert the company of the name you go by online for kotaku...AND INCLUDE WHICH STORE YOU WORK AT?!

  • @HoorayForCorn: Casual science, the noblest of past-times :P

What kind of science may I ask ?

  • Ii would tell you more about me, but the last time I did, everyone on kotaku proclaimed me a liar :-)

Seriously though, I'm living in Switzerland, 28 years old, studied Computer Science, work as a Software Engineer und UI Designer at a small company in Zürich.

  • I'm Joey Oliver: US Air Force bomb squad (shipping out on November 20), a college student studying Civil Engineering, amature bodybuilder (looking to do shows within the next year or so), and avid retro gamer.

  • Name: Classified - lets justs say 'Sento' for now

    Age: 20

Occupation: I happen to be a third key manager for gamestop

Education: High school graduate, attending community college courses for language studies. English/Japanese

Location: I'm not actually far off from Crecente as I live In Phoenix , which I think is the closest major city to Denver other then Las vegas. It's a alright... a place culturally diverse as lets say New York. Theres a particularly odd movement which I'm not sure many gamers and or retailers are knowledgeable about but in phoenix and our surrounding cities it's actually common place for visitors to come across the boarder - purchase a plethora of games and then take them back and sell them at a marked up price. something which I've been writing about locally for a short amount of time.

Favorite games: Puzzle quest, Monster hunter, Final fantasy, Gradius, Guitar Freaks, Raiden, Ninja gaiden, Gears of war

Not much else then that. I own a PS3, XB360 and enjoy Japaneses music, art and language as I see

  • @JebCrash: True that.

  • @HoorayForCorn: Are you making a neat gun for the people who are still alive?

Look at you, still posting when there's science to do!

  • 33, male, residing in Denmark. Been an frequent visitor for about half a year, checking in at least once daily. Love the site, style and content.

Been playing since I was 5, even had a career in computers (system administrator in the danish army) but I discovered that while I like computers and games, I didn't want to dedicate my life entirely to it. So now I've changed career tracks and work within the judicial system.

I've had ZX-81, Vic-20, C64, Amiga 500, Amiga 2000, Amiga 4000, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Advanced Gameboy, the clamshell advanced Gameboy, the first Nintendo DS, now the DS Lite, PSP, Playstation, Playstation 2, Snes, Sega Master System, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast and currently I have an Xbox 360, PS2 and PS3 (plus PSP and NDS Lite).

  • 28 year old game designer, located deep deep on the outskirts of the game industrie.
Through a lot pasion and hard work I have gained the
the respect and help of some of my friends who work in the game industries(top designers).Currently I am ill and reading a lot of kotaku ^^ I enjoy the up to minute coverage, but when not sick I enjoy clubbing and bar hopping in the so cal area.after a night of cubbing I come home, check the net, talk to the EX>< and sit down and work on the current project. I also try fit in classic and current gaming every where in between.
CURRENTLY PLAYING(super revenge of shinobi 2(shinobi 3) megumi rescue, langrisser 2, guardien heroes, sonic rush 2 and phantom hour glass.

  • @MURDERFACE: Tips man, tips.

22 year old male currently studying at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. Bachelor of Applied Science (Information Technology). Part-time accountant for a small farm company, actively seeking a full-time job. I am a very lazy individual and not one for small talk, but despite that I still go clubbing when I am in the mood (maybe once or twice a week). I also attend the gym every second day.

I'm sure this may come as a rather large shock to most of you, but I am also a gamer. A very competitive one at that. I visit Kotaku regularly (at least once a day) but I prefer to read comments rather than post. I've said too much, time to go back to lurker status.

  • 18 year old Graphic Design major at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. I'm Mexican and I speak English and Spanish fluently. I'm also studying Japanese.

My hobbies include video games, writing, drawing, internet browsing, running, and the opposite sex.

    Yup.

  • I'm a 23 year old college student (University of Washington), who has two three quarters left before I get my bachelors in Japanese literature. I plan on moving to Japan sometime next year...hopefully before the end of the year. I've been a gamer ever since I was 3, when my father bought a Nintendo with Super Mario Bros. I'm currently enjoying my PS3, 360, and PSP. I'm a Final Fantasy whore, MGS whore, and SNK/Capcom whore. My weakness? Cute girls.

  • @Libo: Wow, you've been a member here almost a year and thats your sixth comment. Lurker status confirmed !

  • This is only my second comment. My name is Larry Fabulous. I changed it last December because I liked it better than the name I was born with. I live in Honolulu, HI and have worked in spas on land, spas on cruise ships, opera houses, utility companies, video game stores, toy stores, book stores, grocery stores, banks, and realty offices. I'm enjoying my eighth day of being 25-years-old. I'm a licensed massage therapist, certified travel agent, and am taking courses to become an English teacher overseas. I'm also interested in farming and learning how wines and cheeses are made. I'm going to volunteer on organic farms around the world starting next January so that I can learn these things. I went to a clothing optional beach for the first time yesterday. I buy video games. I don't play most of them, and the ones I do play hardly ever find themselves finished. I have hundreds upon hundreds. I read Kotaku because I feel obligated to stay a part of the industry because it was such a big part of my development. I also read Kotaku because I like the tone the writers use, the blatant disregard for correct spelling and grammar, and the baseless crush I harbor for Flynn. I move a lot, because there's always something new I want to do, and I do it. Thanks to modern cell phone technology, I enjoy Kotaku on the go. And now you all know. Google is your friend.

  • Soon-to-be 19 year old male college student at the University of California, San Diego (Political Science major, if anyone's curious). Right now I'm a little worried if we'll be evacuated because of the fires, but now it looks like they're moving away from the campus.

  • Easy survey is easy.

16 year old male. Living in the middle of Kansas. Into gaming, anime, manga, literature, that kinda stuff. Will start working at Sonics soon (my fav. fast food restaurant). Goals in life are to become a Chess Grandmaster someday, set a new world record high jump, and find a career in something I enjoy.
Awaiting for Smash Bros. Dojo to update...

Lolz, I must be the youngest one commenting here right now.

  • I'm a 25-year-old married lady who works at the local Electronics department in Wal*Mart. Not the most exciting day job, but I get free swag from vendors! Stuff that no other associates get because I play all the games.

I own a PS1, PS2, NES, SNES, N64, NGC, Wii, NDS, GBA, GBC, GBASP. Borrowing a friend's XBox 360 with which to play Halo 3. He's got my Wii. Think of it as a "cultural exchange."

I'm a hobby-drawn artist by way of sketches and half-assed CG with PSCS2. I write in my free time and plan on doing NaNoWriMo next month.

My favorite games have to be Mario 2 on the NES, Ocarina of Time on the GC, Cooking Mama on the DS, and Phantom Hourglass on the DS.

My other hobbies are cooking (I adore cooking for large crowds!), tea and coffee (the caffeine in tea is absorbed more slowly than that of coffee, so it lasts longer. Try that, you guys!), reading (mostly fantasy), writing (again), and electronical equipment. I do love my job (most days) and have always wanted to write reviews for video games. Mostly Nintendo since that's my big thing.

I don't comment a lot on Kotaku but I do read almost every article. I watched the Halo 3 tournament and even held one in honor of the release at the store. I have a giant stack of release forms that parents of kids under 18 had to sign. What a mess!

  • @bernbaum: I create and run experiments that focus on the exploration and application of compounds to be used in quantum computing prototypes.

I'm just fucking with you. I don't actually do science.

  • I'm a 26 year old male teaching English at a private high school in Nagoya, Japan. The high school I teach at is renowned for it's poor academic level. Still it's great fun mainly coz the students don't have any huge expectations thrust upon them. Also i only teach 4 hours a day so the rest of the time is spent checking out kotaku, reading about the imminent demise of Nova and shooting the shit with the other foriegn staff i teach with.
Game wise I own a PS3, 360, wii and a decent PC. The 360 and wii are getting the most play time while the PS3 only gets used once a blue moon by the girlfriend to play FF12.

  • I'm a 26 year old game developer/designer for a Seattle casual game company. Comp Sci graduate with minor in Japanese from University of Puget Sound.

I have spent my early years out of college working in web design and system administration, until I landed my current gig.

I'm a huge gamer and have been for as long as I can remember. PC, console, new, retro, casual, hardcore; doesn't matter to me. It's all worth my time, and most times alot of fun :)

Kotaku is my daily break when I need to clear my head.

  • @larryfabulous: "...the blatant disregard for correct spelling and grammar..."

    Ouch, backhanded compliment alert.

  • @Chesu: lol shhh this is like alcoholics anonymous...

  • Guys they mean fill up the survey. Interesting comments though :D

  • 22 year old full time student. International Business Major at Weber State University, Utah. Looking to go do my MBA at BYU, also in Utah. I used to kick it by going snow boarding, 4-wheeling, and video games. Now I spend most of my time handcuffed to my desk studying. and of course video games. Chain Dr. Pepper drinker.

  • Video gamer since NES. Design student. I don't feel so inclined... unless it will help me win the US $100 Amazon.com gift certificate. Then I'm hella inclined.

    Check out my blog: [alby13.blogspot.com]

  • 18 year old freshman at Mason Gross School of Arts at Rutgers University. Studying to be a film major, but they don't have a film program in this school - which I realised after I finalised everything.T.T
So far have lived a long and interesting life in two countries - born in India, lived in USA and then in Sri Lanka and now back in USA. Love travelling. Love Korean food. Love Anime. Love Gaming. Frequent this site like every 10 minutes as I bore myself with nothing to do on the internet and keep hitting refresh on my iGoogle page. Well known for being a nocturnal with little or no sleep at all. And lastly but most importantly - a Nintendo Fanboy at heart =].

  • Name - Robby Avila
    Age - 19
Sex - Male...as the name dictates
    Locale - Manhattan, KS
    Favorite Game - Final Fantasy...Anything

I am a sophomore at Kansas State University majoring in music education/saxophone. I'm a member of The Pride of Wildcat Land, The Kansas State University Marching Band, the Concert Band, two jazz ensembles, Pub Crawl Band, Volleyball Band, and Basketball Cat Band.
Being a music major, I don't really do anything but practice and play in 7 ensembles. Any free time I have is quickly eaten my the soulless corporation know to the world as Wal-Mart. Sadly, I work there, electronics. The only good thing about working there is that we have the Guitar Hero III demo, which is all I did for about...my entire shift.

  • 37...living in long beach cali taking care of my mom with Alzheimer's with the wife and kids..I dont wish this disease on anyone. First game I ever played and got me hooked was atari's superman. Im sure there were others but I dont remember staying up for hours playing it then.

  • WRAR, I HAVE MANIFESTED ON THIS PLANET IN THE NEW YORK CITY COLONY FOR 17 YEARS (I have a penis btw).

I have no social life, so I should just state what games I'm interested in!

BRACE YOURSELF FOR A LONG LIST OF NOTHINGNESS.

    - Just about anything by Atlus, especially their shmups (ESP.Ra.De <3) and Megaten (currently playing Raidou Kuzonoha vs. The Soulless Army. Winsauce). Their GBA games pwned hard too.
    - Anything Disgaea.
    - Warriors/Musou series.
    - Castleroid games, including the very sad and lonely but lovable Demon's Crest(I still consider Aria of Sorrow the greatest game ever :3)
    - Streets of Rage (any) and Turtles in Time. Hell yes.
    - Fighting games! Not particularly pro in any, but all the Soul Calibur games (mainly 3), Guilty Gear (complete rubbish in it), and Tekken 5 (can't care for the other ones except for tag). Currently addicted to JUMP. Saint Seiya pwns your face. :D
    - 2D Zelda games (never laid my fingers on a 3D one, but played pretty much all the 2D ones.)
    - Guitar Hero, although I prefer Gitaroo Man.
    - Anything Kojima touched.
    - Anything Inafune touched.
    - Kirby! <3
    - Dreamcast classics such as JGR and PSO.

My first game ever was Duck Hunt/Super Mario Bros. I preferred Duck Hunt.
    /end!

  • You read it. Thanks :)

But it wasn't meant to hurt feelings. I like that everything is posted for the sake of getting the news out rather then filtering filtering filtering it through until it's just ign.com

  • 25 year old medical student that forgets to eat at times due to so much studying. Have barely played Halo 3, but use it as a great stress relief. Love Kotaku for procrastination and being more informed than the other nerds in my class.

  • I'm a 20 year old male from St. Louis. I've finished a semester of college and a writing correspondence course, and am probably going to enroll in the broadcasting school here in January.
Been playing games since I was 2 (I tried to get behind the TV to "help Mario" when my mom played SMB) and love intelligent debates. Oh, I write stories, and play guitar.

Oh, and I love Kotaku. :-p

  • 31, BA in Game Art/Design program. Like long walks on the beach and currently looking for a sugardaddy.

  • 21yo male from brazil, writer/3D artist .. currently finishing a 10 month long writing process for a script, part of a pitch/portfoil material.

Read kotaku because the other websites only market the games/industry instead of enjoying them/it.

  • Sup Kotaku, Angry Norwegian Gamer here.

Why angry you say? Well, all that.. living in Europe and not getting any game within a month of the US release. Take Guitar Hero 3, I was really looking forward the the 28th, untill i checked the EU release date, which is 23 Nov. :( Ok, I'll stop whining now.

I'm 18, in school, one year left, then the military, or whatever. I have more or less no homework, so I'm gaming alot, though I still have to complete bioshock.

But yeah, I'm in school now, and I have a assignment to be done, laters!

  • Im a 18 year old college student. Currently majoring in IT with a focus on Network Security. I live in the the beautiful golden state California.
