Get Your Tenori-on On

There's been some buzz about the Tenori-on, the musical instrument-toy-game-Lite-Brite thing designed by Toshio Iwai (the guy behind Electroplankton) - it's been released in the UK and can be yours for a mere £599 (about $1200). It's obviously reminiscent of Electroplankton, and I'm also reminded of Lumines. Alas, I'm but a poor grad student, and even an exceedingly cool, shiny, and musical Lite-Brite isn't in the budget. Here's Iwai demoing his creation at the UK launch on 4 September. Toshio Iwai, the crazy musical genius behind the DS music "game" Electroplankton, is back and with a new crazy device. Called the Tenori-On, this Iwai and Yamaha Music created portable music player is still in the prototype phase. The instrument is laid out on a 16-by-16 grid of LED buttons and boasts two built-in speakers. The buttons can either be lightly strummed like a harp or pressed. Notes are apparently set off by a line of light that sweeps left to right, sorta like Lumines. What does it sound like? Electroplankton. Every generation needs a theremin. I'm so happy we're getting ours. Brian Ashcraft More »

I've been reading about Electroplankton since back when it hit the DS in Japan. People universally like the game and have found a lot of interesting ways of saying that. Adam, over at Gamers With Jobs, just wrote up his impressions and manages to capture the essence of the game in a well-put-together review. In one of the best one-line descriptions I've seen of the game, Adam likens the title to fingerpainting with sound. More »

Just got word: Electroplankton is hitting the U.S. in January. The music creation
"toy" for the Nintendo DS allows you to tinker with music while playing around with tiny creatures. The only downside is that the game is only going to be sold online and at the Nintendo World Store in New York. More »
